Book excerpt: Return to Joy is a compelling and potent invitation to the reader to consider that joy is the ultimate nature of reality and that its absence lies at the root of the current, unprecedented global crisis. In this book, Andrew and Carolyn mine the mystical wisdom of the ages that places joy at the core of our existence and purpose as a species, moving forward to consider in depth the myriad enemies of joy in our time. As we tend the fires of joy, we celebrate its seven flames and nurture its ubiquitous presence whether in the background or the foreground of our lives.

Book The Great Introduction to Astrology by Ab Ma ar 2 vols

Download or read book The Great Introduction to Astrology by Ab Ma ar 2 vols written by Keiji Yamamoto † and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 1435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abū Ma’͑šar’s Great Introduction to Astrology (mid-ninth century) is the most comprehensive and influential text on astrology in the Middle Ages. In addition to presenting astrological doctrine, it provides a detailed justification for the validity of astrology and establishes its basis within the natural sciences of the philosophers. These two volumes provide a critical edition of the Arabic text; a facing English translation, which includes references to the divergences in the twelfth-century Latin translations of John of Seville and Hermann of Carinthia (Volume 1); and the large fragment of a Greek translation (edited by David Pingree). Comprehensive Arabic, English, Greek and Latin glossaries enable one to trace changes in vocabulary and terminology as the text passed from one culture to another. (Volume 2.)

Book Considering Wisdom

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Copple
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2020-07-29
  • ISBN : 1973696215
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Considering Wisdom written by Michael Copple and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his book, Considering Wisdom, author Michael Copple gently and lovingly reveals the beginning of wisdom and the Source of wisdom as he delves into controversial subjects with great anticipation of joining and reasoning together with those who’ve been exposed to so many different facets of indoctrination. He admits to also being “programmed”, but discerns he is indoctrinated with sound doctrine rather than false doctrine. Of course, everyone has free will to believe their own schooling. However, many points are made in an attempt to prove there is only one absolute truth when wisdom is seriously and honestly considered. The writer also acknowledges that he cannot force any change onto anyone, but the Source used for explanations can certainly get a person’s attention if one is willing to listen. The author submits that minds can easily be filled with allegedly compelling facts relating to acknowledged but divisive topics. The matters in which he has chosen to divulge truth when applying wisdom include the following: climate change; gods of different religions; voting; forms of government; truthful education versus “intellectual” indoctrination; abortion; LGBTQ; gender identification; and revised history. The author offers sound insight and unique perspective such as telling the difference between knowledge and wisdom. For example, a person can have knowledge to know everything there is to know, but wisdom provides the ability to discern what is true and what is false about what one knows. Although the author attempts to write in a gentle and loving tone, he admits that there are different kinds of love, i.e., godly love, brotherly love, eros love—but sometimes showing godly love and brotherly love can come across as tough love. When considering wisdom, this tough love, which, like other forms of love, regards others more important than self, cannot be squelched. Solomon said, “Many waters cannot quench love, nor can the floods drown it.” (Song of Solomon 8:7a) Brotherly love is what prompts the action to write a book of this caliber.

Book How To Be a Rogue Trader

Download or read book How To Be a Rogue Trader written by John Gapper and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling, topical e-book on the motives and patterns of rogue traders, and the investment banking system that hosts them, by John Gapper of the Financial Times. Nick Leeson at Barings. Jerome Kerviel at Societe Generale. John Rusnak at Allied Irish Banks. And now the thirty-one-year-old Kweku Adoboli, a director on a derivatives desk who allegedly ran up $2.3 billion in losses at UBS. These are the rogue traders who have bought banks to their knees and global financial systems to a halt. Each time, the banks declare themselves to be innocent victims of a fraud. But why do traders keep on committing apparently senseless crimes, with little benefit apart from higher bonuses and an enormous risk of ending up in prison? And why do banks, which should have learned the tricks of the traders, keep being deceived? In this short e-book, the Financial Times associate editor John Gapper unlocks the mystery by delving into the evolutionary risk-taking instincts of both humans and animals—from yellow-eyed junco sparrows in Arizona to honeybees. He reveals how banks encourage their traders to evade risk limits and shows how the rogue traders merely mimic the strategies used by their firms to seem more profitable than they really are. A rogue trader is often an outsider who starts in a lowly role and secretly gambles with a bank's money in a bid to become a star. Gapper traces patterns of behaviour and personality that could be used to catch them before disaster strikes. But do the banks really want to? And are the rogue traders just the symptoms of a financial system gone rogue?

Book The Dative

Download or read book The Dative written by William van Belle and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second part of a two-volume reader on the 'Dative'. In the first part, which appeared in 1996, eleven papers were presented providing a syntactic and semantic description of the category 'Dative' in eleven languages. The aim of this second part is to discuss several aspects of the Dative in greater detail. It contains eight papers dealing with theoretical considerations on 'dativity' as well as with contrastive, typological and diachronic issues. A major concern is the relation between form (case, grammatical relation) and meaning (semantic roles or other kinds of meaning). Most contributions in this volume represent cognitive and functional views or a critical discussion of them.As in the first volume, the linguistic material mainly stems from Germanic and Romance languages. Contemporary English is the basis for Davidse's theoretical claims; Pasicki studies the dative in Old English. Dutch appears especially in Geeraerts' semantic analysis, but also in the papers by Draye, Lamiroy & Delbecque and Van Langendonck. Draye, Lamiroy & Delbecque and Melis also take German into consideration. Latin is dealt with by Melis and Van Langendonck. Modern Romance languages, especially French, provide further data for Melis and Lamiroy & Delbecque. Finally, Newman adduces a variety of languages for his typological analyses.
