Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hanuman, the devoted monkey helper of Rama and Sita, has long been recognized as a popular character in India's ancient Ramayana epic. But more recently he has also become one of the most beloved and worshiped gods in the Hindu pantheon - enshrined in majestic new temples, but equally present in poster art, advertising, and mass media. Drawing on Sanskrit and vernacular texts, classical iconography and modern TV serials, and extensive fieldwork and interviews, Philip Lutgendorf challenges the academic cliché of Hanuman as a "minor" or "folk" deity by exploring his complex and growing role in South Asian religion and culture. This wide-ranging study examines the historical evolution of Hanuman's worship, his close association with Shiva and goddesses, his invocation in tantric ritual, his physical immortality and enduring presence in sacred sites, and his appeal to devotees who include scholars, wrestlers, healers, politicians, and middle-class urbanites. Lutgendorf also offers a rich array of entertaining stories not previously available in English: an expanding epic cycle that he christens the "Hanumayana." Arguing that Hanuman's role as cosmic "middle man" is intimately linked to his embodiment in a charming and provocative simian form, Lutgendorf moves beyond the Indian subcontinent to interrogate the wider human fascination with anthropoid primates as boundary beings and as potent signifiers of both Self and Other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part VII: Uttar Kand This is the seventh and concluding part of this sacred epic as narrated by Shri Tulasi Das and interpreted by this author. The verses are referred to by their numbers as per the Ram Charit Manas book published by Geeta Press, Gorakhpur. They should be referred to for context and to build an understanding of the original text as it is and this humble interpretation by Author should be just considered an individualistic imagination and effort to understand and feel the devotion towards Lord Ram. Author has tried to explain the verses as they are, wherever possible, and then expanded with creative freedom on what could be the symbolism and analogies the verses that can be derived from. Whatever is derived, or expressed in parallel symbolism or analogies, thus express the Author's individual opinion and imagination. Author has also tried to interpret the tale in an original manner ( in context of the deriving the parallelism, using the parallelisms, symbolisms and analogies and in providing examples) in addition to what has already been written by Shri Tulasi Das as elucidated in Hindi commentary provided by Shri Hanuman Prasad Poddar for each verse. Author has leveraged the verses, and their sequence and corresponding chapters or Kand as they are referred to by Shri Tulasi Das to structure his own interpretations of symbolisms that may exist or can be derived, however they should be taken as creative liberties to expand on, while preserving the original intention of the sacred tale. Book Hanuman s Journey to the Medicine Mountain

Download or read book Hanuman s Journey to the Medicine Mountain written by Vatsala Sperling and published by Bear Cub Books. This book was released on 2006-09-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tells the adventures of the magical monkey Hanuman, beloved in India as the devoted helper of Ram, hero of the Hindu epic tale the Ramayana • Introduces Western children to one of the most playful and beloved characters of Hindu mythology • Illustrated throughout with full-color paintings in the traditional Indian style Son of the monkey princess Anjana and the wind god Pavan, Hanuman is born on Earth to be a helper for Ram, the hero of the Hindu epic the Ramayana. Hanuman is no ordinary monkey. He has the ability to leap higher than the sun and move faster than the wind. When the demon king Ravana kidnaps Ram’s wife, Sita, and carries her off to his island home, the army that goes to rescue her is left discouraged on the beach--stopped by the wide expanse of water between them and the island of Lanka. But magical Hanuman is able to jump over the ocean in one amazing bound. He finds the captive Sita and helps her to take heart and remain strong and confident that Ram will find a way to save her. And indeed Ram does, but only with the devoted assistance of his mercurial monkey helper. Hanuman shrinks to the size of a fly; grows large enough to uproot a huge tree as though it were a turnip; soars through the sky, setting the city of Lanka on fire with the tip of his tail; and digs up an entire mountain in order to deliver its healing herbs to Ram’s stricken army. This beautifully illustrated retelling of Hanuman’s story makes accessible to Western children and their parents one of the most playful and beloved characters of the Hindu tradition.
