Download or read book God Is Enough written by Melvin E. Dieter and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generation after generation of readers have kept Hannah Whitall Smith's The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life in continuous print since its first publication in 1875. Many of them, however, never became well acquainted with similar gems of spiritual devotion that are found not only in her other published writings but also in the thousands of pages of unpublished letters and journals in which she recorded her spiritual journey. In 1982, through the kindness of her great-granddaughter, Barbara Strachey Halpern, the editors were given free access to the family's treasure lode of books, memorabilia, and manuscripts at her home in Oxford, England. The result was God Is Enough. The warm response generated by its first printing in 1986 and supported by the thousands who welcomed each additional printing thereafter indicates that the practical spiritual insights of this most widely read spiritual counselor of the nineteenth century still speak to us today.

Download or read book Hannah Whitall Smith written by Robert Alden Danielson and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hannah Whitall Smith (1832-1911) is perhaps best known as the writer of the holiness classic Christian's secret to a happy life, but her interests extended much farther than religious revival. This Quaker from Pennsylvania and her husband, Robert Pearsall Smith, were very much influenced by William E. Boardman and became leaders in the Holiness Movement in the United States and the Higher Life Movement in Great Britain. Hannah quickly outshone her husband in speaking and she carried on an extensive correspondence with many people, but especially women both within and outside of these movements. Hannah befriended social activists like Frances Willard of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and Susan B. Anthony along with other supporters of women's suffrage. She also took an active interest in how the doctrine of sanctification could spin off into religious fanaticism, and so she maintained relationships with Anna Spafford of the Overcomers, who founded the American Colony in Jerusalem and Lord and Lady Mount Temple, who were known Spiritualists. Her correspondence shows a wide area of interests and her very rational approach to holiness is revealed in her religious writings.--Back cover.
Download or read book Quakers and Mysticism written by Jon R. Kershner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nearly 400-year tradition of Quaker engagements with mystical ideas and sources. It provides a fresh assessment of the way tradition and social context can shape a religious community while interplaying with historical and theological antecedents within the tradition. Quaker concepts such as “Meeting,” the “Light,” and embodied spirituality, have led Friends to develop an interior spirituality that intersects with extra-Quaker sources, such as those found in Jakob Boehme, Abū Bakr ibn Tufayl, the Continental Quietists, Kabbalah, Buddhist thought, and Luyia indigenous religion. Through time and across cultures, these and other conversations have shaped Quaker self-understanding and, so, expanded previous models of how religious ideas take root within a tradition. The thinkers engaged in this globally-focused, interdisciplinary volume include George Fox, James Nayler, Robert Barclay, Elizabeth Ashbridge, John Woolman, Hannah Whitall Smith, Rufus Jones, Inazo Nitobe, Howard Thurman, and Gideon W. H. Mweresa, among others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of women in church leadership is controversial; however, the Pentecostal tradition, and specifically the Assemblies of God, has held that women can serve at all levels of church leadership. There is no role that is off-limits to women. Citing their distinctive approach to theology, Pentecostals embrace women's leadership in policy, but in practice, women are often frustrated by the lack of opportunity and representation in leadership roles. By exploring the rhetorical history, how Pentecostals talk about the role of women, the purpose of this book is to expose those rhetorical constraints that create dissonance and discontentment. This book explores how Pentecostals use and are used by language that shapes this dissonance and how that impacts the lived reality of both men and women in the Pentecostal tradition.
