Book Hannah s Desire God s Design

Download or read book Hannah s Desire God s Design written by Joan E. Cook and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyses the biblical personage Hannah as a literary entity, to illustrate her uniquely significant place in the traditions of Israel as the mother of Samuel and thus of the reform of the priesthood, the creation of the monarchy, and the teacher of all Israel. There are three interweaving themes: first, the literary issue of the barren mother type scene; second, the theological theme of divine guidance and human initiative; and third, the perspectives of early biblical interpretation. The study develops around four works: the Hannah narrative in 1 Samuel 1-2, Pseudo-Philo's Biblical Antiquities, the Targum of the Prophets, and the Infancy Narrative in Luke 1-2.

Book The David Story A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel

Download or read book The David Story A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel written by Robert Alter and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A masterpiece of contemporary Bible translation and commentary."—Los Angeles Times Book Review, Best Books of 1999 Acclaimed for its masterful new translation and insightful commentary, The David Story is a fresh, vivid rendition of one of the great works in Western literature. Robert Alter's brilliant translation gives us David, the beautiful, musical hero who slays Goliath and, through his struggles with Saul, advances to the kingship of Israel. But this David is also fully human: an ambitious, calculating man who navigates his life's course with a flawed moral vision. The consequences for him, his family, and his nation are tragic and bloody. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

Book excerpt: Hannah teaches how to overcome ridicule hurdled at her continuouslywaiting for the impossible, when all you see is darkness; leaving a legacy for the next generation; barren places in our lives that pierce the soul like thorns. How do you raise a godly child? By making prayer a main priority. How can you face rejection in the home, in society, and at church? What questions should you consider before marriage? When God does not answer, do you ask for wisdom? These are things to ponder while praying. We have so much turmoil as Satan tries to destroy our lives. Satan wants to leave Hannah like the man that fell among thieves, wounded and unable to help himself. But she calls upon her God to save her. She finds strength to carry on through all the schemes of Satan and others to bring her down. Hannah becomes a courageous woman, and we can too. Her life, like the rose, opens up more and more to reveal the characteristics of the God that she has learned to love and trust. Full of Gods love, her life still blesses ours today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hannah, also spelled Anna, (11th century BC), mother of Samuel, the Jewish judge. Childless as one of the two wives of Elkanah, she prayed for a son, promising to dedicate him to God. Her prayers were answered, and she brought the child Samuel to Shiloh for religious training. In the Talmud, she is named as one of seven prophetesses, and her prayer is in the Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) the first-day service, exemplifying successful petitions to God Elkanah had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. In the biblical narrative, Hannah is one of the two wives of Elkanah. The other, Peninnah, had given birth to Elkanah's children, but Hannah remained childless. Nevertheless, Elkanah preferred Hannah. According to Lillian Klein, the use of this chiasmus underscores the standing of the women: Hannah is the primary wife, yet Peninnah has succeeded in bearing children. Hannah's status as primary wife and her barrenness recall Sarah and Rebecca in Genesis 17 and Genesis 25 respectively. Klein suggests that Elkanah took Peninnah as a second wife because of Hannah's barrenness. This book will tell you everything you need to know about Hannah- the mother of Samuel!

Book Hannah s Prayer and Its Answer

Download or read book Hannah s Prayer and Its Answer written by Ronald S. Wallace and published by Eerdmans Publishing Company. This book was released on 2002-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament story of Hannah stands as a powerful example of the importance and efficacy of prayer. In these pages master Bible teacher Ronald Wallace transforms Hannah's story and the entire narrative of 1 Samuel 1-7 into a satisfying, illuminating Bible study for individuals and groups. The fruit of Wallace's lifelong exploration of the biblical texts, this book reflects his sensitivity to both the ancient context and the contemporary relevance of the Hannah narrative. Wallace's skillful handling of this story not only spells out the meaning and implications of the various events but also reveals significant counterparts in the New Testament. Central to the story of Hannah, however, is the role of humble, persistent prayer in the life of faith. By moving carefully with Wallace through the first seven chapters of 1 Samuel, readers will find encouragement for their personal prayer life and, further, will realize anew the importance of praying more broadly for the people of God and for all of society. Filled with scholarly insight yet easily accessible to readers at every level, Hannah's Prayer and Its Answer provides a wonderful guide to this beloved -- and spiritually rich -- portion of Scripture.
