Book Libretto for Handel s Giulio Cesare in Egitto

Download or read book Libretto for Handel s Giulio Cesare in Egitto written by and published by . This book was released on 2022-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giulio Cesare in Egitto is Handel's most famous opera. Its story is characterized by love, intrigue, murder, betrayal, vengeance, despair, and triumph, sufficiently whetting your intellectual curiosity. At the same time, the opera contains arias and ensembles that express a wide range of timeless human emotions, which will touch your heart and soul. The book consists of line-by-line translations of Italian and English. With Italian on the left and English on the right column, the book's layout makes it easy to follow both languages. While most translations abide by the principle of line-by-line translation, the convoluted syntax of certain parts of the original text makes it impossible to do so. We wish that readers are open-minded to this aspect of translation. The book contains a list of main characters and a synopsis of the opera. Most descriptions of characters' movements, emotions, and scene descriptions are deliberately omitted so that readers can easily follow dialogues while they read the text and listen to the opera simultaneously. However, when omission might create possible confusion in understanding the storyline, they remain intact. All soliloquies (Fra se) are parenthesized.

Book Understanding Italian Opera

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tim Carter
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015-09-16
  • ISBN : 0190247967
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Understanding Italian Opera written by Tim Carter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera is often regarded as the pinnacle of high art. A "Western" genre with global reach, it is where music and drama come together in unique ways, supported by stellar singers and spectacular scenic effects. Yet it is also patently absurd -- why should anyone break into song on the dramatic stage? -- and shrouded in mystique. In this engaging and entertaining guide, renowned music scholar Tim Carter unravels its many layers to offer a thorough introduction to Italian opera from the seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries. Eschewing the technical musical detail that all too often dominates writing on opera, Carter begins instead where the composers themselves did: with the text. Walking readers through the relationship between music and poetry that lies at the heart of any opera, Carter then offers explorations of five of the most enduring and emblematic Italian operas: Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea; Handel's Julius Caesar in Egypt; Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro; Verdi's Rigoletto; and Puccini's La Bohème. Shedding light on the creative collusions and collisions involved in bringing opera to the stage, the various, and varying, demands of the text and music, and the nature of its musical drama, Carter also shows how Italian opera has developed over the course of music history. Complete with synopses, cast lists, and suggested further reading for each work discussed, Understanding Italian Opera is a must-read for anyone with an interest in and love for this glorious art.

Finally, two indexes list the main characters in each opera and the names of singers, conductors, producers, composers, directors, choreographers, and arrangers.
