Book The Gospel According to Mark

Download or read book The Gospel According to Mark written by James R. Edwards and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new Pillar volume offers exceptional commentary on Mark that clearly shows the second Gospel though it was a product of the earliest Christian community to be both relevant and sorely needed in today's church. Written by a biblical scholar who has devoted thirty years to the study of the second Gospel, this commentary aims primarily to interpret the Gosepl of Mark according to its theological intentions and purposes, especially as they relate to the life and ministry of Jesus and the call to faith and discipleship. Unique features of James Edwards's approach include clear descriptions of key terms used by Mark and revealing discussion of the Gospel's literary features, including Mark's use of the "sandwich" technique and of imagistic motifs and irony. Edwards also proposes a new paradigm for interpreting the difficult "Little Apocalypse" of chapter 13, and he argues for a new understanding of Mark's controversial ending.

Book The Gospel According to Mark

Download or read book The Gospel According to Mark written by Julie M. Smith and published by Byu Studies. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of Mark is an undiscovered gem, hiding in plain sight. Mark s story at least from the vantage point of a twenty-first-century audience is virtually unknown. Following broader trends in Christian history, Latterday Saints have focused on the other Gospels. Mark s Gospel gets very little attention and, when it does, it is usually read through the lenses of the other Gospels, with the result that Mark s distinctive voice is muted. But the Jesus presented in Mark s Gospel is worthy of study: He is a man of action and few words. He is witty, warm, and wise. He s also the Son of God. He has power which leaves people in awe, and he uses that power to help the people most people don t like. He hugs little kids. He listens to and learns from women. He banishes demons and reminds parents to feed their children. He doesn t know everything, but he does know how to end chaos. His disciples usually misunderstand him, but he teaches them continually and patiently. This Jesus is betrayed an

Book Revelation of John the Apostle

Download or read book Revelation of John the Apostle written by Richard D. Draper and published by Brigham Young University Studies. This book was released on 2016-01-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To read the book of Revelation is to see a myriad of representations pass by our gaze, offering and kaleidoscope of bizarre and incongruent images. This world strikes us at first as fearfully and mysteriously strange and fantastic. But once these symbols are properly deciphered, they combine to present crucial messages for those living in the last days. These messages were designed by God to lead all successfully through these troubled times if they will read, hear, and do his will. This commentary presents a comprehensive analysis of John's book aided by the lens of LDS doctrine and Mormon experience. God delivered his messages in the form of images housed within discrete visions, with each symbol explaining, exposing, or emphasizing various aspects of the message conveyed. The challenge is getting beyond the symbols to the represented realities. Information is drawn from all the Standard Works, the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible, and from modern Prophets and Apostles.

Book The Gospel of St Mark

Download or read book The Gospel of St Mark written by Dennis Eric Nineham and published by Penguin Group. This book was released on 1963 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story begins in the period immediately after the lifetime of Jesus when as yet there were no written accounts of any sort, but the tradition about him was preserved entirely by word of mouth. So far as the material in our Gospels is concerned, it was preserved during this period exclusively by Christians. Although St. Mark was no biographer, by linking together the various separate stories and groups of stories with summary passages of his own composition, he has produced what is, so far as its form is concerned, a connected historical narrative. It tells of the Lord's baptism by John the Baptist, of a subsequent varied ministry in Galilee, of some journeys outside Galilee ending with a journey to Jerusalem, and finally of a series of events -- the entry upon the ass, the cleansing of the temple, the scene in the treasury, and the like -- which must obviously have taken place in Jerusalem. - Introduction.

Book The Gospel of Mark and the Roman Jewish War of 66 70 CE

Download or read book The Gospel of Mark and the Roman Jewish War of 66 70 CE written by Stephen Simon Kimondo and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book interprets Mark's gospel in light of the Roman-Jewish War of 66-70 CE. Locating the authorship of Mark's gospel in rural Galilee or southern Syria after the fall of Jerusalem and the temple, and after Vespasian's enthronement as the new emperor, Kimondo argues that Mark's first hearers--people who lived through and had knowledge of the important events of the war--may have evaluated Mark's story of Jesus as a contrast to Roman imperial values. He makes an intriguing case that Jesus' proclamation as the Messiah in the villages of Caesarea Philippi set up a deliberate contrast between Jesus's teaching and Vespasian's proclamation of himself as the world's divine ruler. He suggests that Mark's hearers may have interpreted Jesus' liberative campaign in Galilee as a deliberate contrast to Vespasian's destructive military campaigns in the area. Jesus's teachings about wealth, power, and status while on the way to Jerusalem may have been heard as contrasts to Roman imperial values; hence, the entire story of Jesus may have been interpreted an anti-imperial narrative.
