Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, brings together Muslims of all races and creed to adopt two unidentifiable white pieces of cloth in an awesome demonstration of Islam's total disregard of insignificant issues like race, social position and nationality. Annually, several million people make the pilgrimage to Makkah from every corner of the globe, providing a unique opportunity of those different nations to meet one another, making it the largest gathering in the world. It is a clear-cut act of worship, but also it is symbolic and represents the spirit's return to itsplace of origin. Hajj is an essential duty (fardh) for all Muslims, who are physically and financially able to perform it. Allah Ta'ala has prescribed certain rites that a pilgrim should uphold for his pilgrimage to be correct. The primary condition is intention (niyyah), while the others will be mentioned in their places. The meaning of the pilgrimage (Hajj meaning effort) is to leave all worldly activities aside and go forth to meet Allah Ta'ala. The purpose of Hajj is to develop consciousness of Allah Ta'ala and also spiritual upliftment. It is also an opportunity to atone sins collected throughout life. Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] had said that a person who performs Hajj properly "will return as (sinless as ) a newly born baby. Due to the usual practice of Umrah being performed before the Hajj, it was deemed appropriate that this publication starts with Umrah. The first part of this book deals with the procedures of Umrah. It clearly outlines the entire procedure of how Umrah should be performed, explaining each part of Umrah individually and giving a breakdown of which actions are necessary and which one's are Sunnah and virtuous. Thereafter the rites of Hajj are described in full in the same clear distinctive manner. Starting from the explanation of the three types of Hajj and how they differ. The "Hajj at a glance" diagram has been specially made to assist the Hajji in simplifying the procedure further.

Book excerpt: And proclaim to mankind the Hajj (pilgrimage); they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass. ?The Noble Qur'an, Surah Al-Hajj 22:27 Allah the Almighty commanded Prophet Ibrahim, peace be unto him, to call people from all over the world for pilgrimage. In addition to the hajj, Muslims also perform umrah'a minor pilgrimage that can be performed any time of year to show submission to Allah the Almighty and symbolize the peace and blessings of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be unto him, and his family. As this pilgrimage involves physical activities and ritual recitations, there must be physical and spiritual preparations'which begin even before pilgrims leave their home countries to embark on their journeys. Handbook for Umrah provides a series of easy-to-read instructions, prayers, and recitations for assisting pilgrims with the preparations and rituals required for a successful umrah pilgrimage. Including Arabic and English translations of passages and requisite prayers, it explains how to understand and perform the pillars and obligations of the umrah, and it provides practical insight about how to prepare for travel and carry out the proper sequence of movements and actions for a valid umrah. The umrah is first about the sincere intention to perform umrah and assume a sacred state of ihram. Book The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Download or read book The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia written by David E. Long and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the outstanding book on Saudi Arabia for readers desiring a comprehensive view of the subject embracing both background and contemporary foreign policy issues."--David L. Mack, chairman, Department of National Security Policy, National War College "The first general survey of Saudi Arabia, to my knowledge, that combines scholarly analysis with breadth of scope, as well as a detailed and nuanced understanding of the country."--Bernard Reich, George Washington University David Long's portrait of Saudi Arabia depicts the kingdom as one of the least understood countries in the world. Encompassing all facets of Saudi life--the land and people, their religion and culture, the country's history, politics, economics, and foreign policy--the book presents scholarship in a highly readable narrative. Drawing upon extensive firsthand experience, Long depicts the often contradictory impulses of a country committed both to modernization and to the values of a traditional society. Alongside his discussion of oil and the Saudi economy, for example, is a chapter on the annual Hajj, or pilgrimage, to Makkah, a subject about which little has been written in English but one that is far more important to the millions of Muslims worldwide than the kingdom's oil wealth. At every turn Long looks at issues from a Saudi point of view as he explores the kingdom's successes, failures, and, most of all, its remarkable resiliency in response to the pressures of social change. David E. Long, a retired Foreign Service officer, has been a visiting professor at several American universities and is currently an international consultant on the Middle East and international terrorism. His publications include The Anatomy of Terrorism (1990) and The United States and Saudi Arabia (1985).
