Whole blocks of facts are deliberately omitted. My problem has been one of selection and elimination. I have endeavored to reduce a large, diffuse subject to lowest terms, to boil it down, to strip it to its essentials, and the reader need look for little more than a working out line. Book The Period Furniture Handbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Period Furniture Handbook Classic Reprint written by G. Glen Gould and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Period Furniture Handbook What we need, in order to form an accurate con ception of the style of furniture of any particular period, is facts, and not an expression of a writer's personal feeling, either in preference for any par ticular style or detestation of it. Unhappily the ability to enjoy what is delightful in every period is not common. The critic who knows everything there is to be known about every one of the period styles is not always as wise a guide as one who has that God-given ability to select unerringly what is best in each. There is not a single one of the period styles which has not some excellent examples of furniture design and craftsman ship to its credit. To discredit the Baroque or the Rococo, the Empire or the Victorian in order to exalt the Gothic or the Renaissance is silly. Each incorporates its own ideas of suitability, dignity, decoration, and comfort. The pomp and state of the rectangular types in Europe and America prior to the 18th Century, all count for nothing when you drop at nightfall into your easy-chair, if it is easy. And can you be grateful enough for that welcome over-stuffing of seat, and back, and arms which enfolds you with a restfulness achieved only in the Victorian era! Book Style in Furniture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Style in Furniture Classic Reprint written by R. Davis Benn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Style in Furniture IT is not the pretension of this work, as will be understood when its dimensions are remarked, to provide a complete and exhaustive history of furniture, but Simply to convey a knowledge of those national types that are still to be met with, in original form, in the auction sale-rooms, the dealers' shops, the country cottage, or the old family mansion; and which are being perpetuated even to-day by the labours of the designer who draws upon time-honoured sources for inspiration. The study of our domestic furnishing as it was prior to the end of the sixteenth century belongs rather to the field of remote antiquarian research, which interests but comparatively few people, and, on that account, has not been included in the present volume. This image-rich text introduces significant movements in the evolution of the decorative arts, including furniture, design motifs, and accessories related to interior design and architectural settings from the Neolithic Age to the 21st century. It augments the study of art and architectural history by discussing the function and aesthetic purpose of furniture, pottery, glassware, lighting, textiles, mirrors, metalworking, clocks, and wallcoverings; as well as their integration into interior design. The author presents crucial contextual information on political and social events and the technological advances that influenced each period's design trends, and compares objects from different periods, demonstrating how ideas and concepts progress through their stylistic development. Descriptions of period room settings show how the decorative arts complement architecture and interior design. Valuable websites and bibliographic information are provided for further exploration, and a glossary highlights key vocabulary.

Book The Stick Chair Book

Download or read book The Stick Chair Book written by Christopher Schwarz and published by . This book was released on 2023-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "..."The Stick Chair Book" is divided into three sections. The first section, "Thinking About Chairs," introduces you to the world of common stick chairs, plus the tools and wood to build them. The second section - "Chairmaking Techniques" - covers every process involved in making a chair, from cutting stout legs, to making curved arms with straight wood, to carving the seat. Plus, you'll get a taste for the wide variety of shapes you can use. The chapter on seats shows you how to lay out 14 different seat shapes. The chapter on legs has 16 common forms that can be made with only a couple handplanes. Add those to the 11 different arm shapes, six arm-joinery options, 14 shapes for hands, seven stretcher shapes and 11 combs, and you could make stick chairs your entire life without ever making the same one twice. The final section offers detailed plans for five stick chairs, from a basic Irish armchair to a dramatic Scottish comb-back. These five chair designs are a great jumping-off point for making stick chairs of your own design. Additional chapters in the book cover chair comfort, finishing and sharpening the tools. From the author: "When I first wrote 'The Stick Chair Book' in 2021, I was also fighting cancer. So I hammered out the text with urgency and the desire to record every fragment of information I knew about chairmaking. "To be fair, that's usually how I go about writing all my books. But then I typically take a couple months off, put the manuscript aside, then revisit it with fresh eyes and a sharpened pen. My final revisions remove about 10-20 percent of the original material. The stuff I cut is usually chapters that don't match the tone of the rest of the text. Or I snip sections that aren't as relevant as when I first wrote them. I also smooth out the writing and add bits of information I'd forgotten during the first brain-to-fingers dump. "And that's exactly what I've done for this revised edition. As a result, the text is 10.1 percent shorter than the first edition. It's more to the point. And it's where the manuscript would have ended up under normal conditions..."--Publisher's website.
