Book Guidelines for the Use of Psychotropic Drugs

Download or read book Guidelines for the Use of Psychotropic Drugs written by H.C. Stancer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . to the Clinician Although huge quantities of drugs are dispensed daily by psychiatrists, there appears to be insufficient concern about the short and long term effects of these exogenous agents on the recipients - our patients. Many clinicians have been trained at a time when knowledge of clinical psychopharmacology was super ficial at best, and recent trainees do not necessarily have access to newer, con stantly changing, relevant information. The busy clinician is frequently depen dent upon the limited knowledge dispensed by the drug company representatives and naturally shys away from many of the more esoteric contributions appearing in the literature. Because of the foregoing issues, the Executive of the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry of the University of Toronto, with the financial support of the Ministry of Health of the Government of Ontario, organized an inter national symposium on May 14-17, 1982, to bring together some of the acknowledged experts in clinical psychopharmacology. This book is, in part, a reflection of that symposium. The editors are aware that a contributed volume, however tightly edited, is not necessarily a textbook. Notwithstanding this, it was thought to be important to assemble expert opinion on current important issues, of immediate concern to the practicing clinician. With this in mind, the chapters have been organized around five themes. Schizophrenia, Affective disorders, and Anxiety, are clearly important since they are the major targets of drug use in psychiatry.

Book Managing the Side Effects of Psychotropic Medications Second Edition

Download or read book Managing the Side Effects of Psychotropic Medications Second Edition written by Joseph F. Goldberg, M.D., M.S. and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book has been divided into three main sections. Part I deals with global issues that bear on the assessment and formulation of possible adverse effects and with pertinent concepts related to basic pharmacology, physiology, and medical monitoring. The chapters in Part II present information organized by individual organ systems or specific medical circumstances rather than by drugs or drug classes. This approach seems to provide a logical and comprehensible format that allow readers to search out information as referenced by a particular side effect (and its varied potential causes) and to locate a discussion of practical management strategies. Part III focuses on summary recommendations covering all the material presented in the book and is followed by helpful appendixes on self-assessment questions and resources for practitioners. The book is meant to serve as a ready reference that simultaneously provides scientific and scholarly discussion of available treatment options and presents their scientific rationales."--page xx.

Book Understanding Biological Psychiatry

Download or read book Understanding Biological Psychiatry written by Robert J. Hedaya and published by W. W. Norton. This book was released on 1996 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a tour of the brain, Dr. Hedaya explains how the brain works and how brain function relates to physical symptoms and cognitive and emotional well-being. He explains how biological psychiatrists consider the biology of the individual as an integral part of the whole picture and demonstrates a new way of conceptualizing clinical problems. Understanding Biological Psychiatry provides information in three basic areas: Chapters 1 and 2 outline basic scientific foundations and core concepts in biological psychiatry; chapters 3 and 4 review biological theories and medical mimics of the major psychiatric disorders; chapters 5 and 6 discuss medication and practical issues, including the basics of psychotropic medications and their role in the biopsychosocial approach. At the heart of this book is the author's proposal for a working alliance between therapists and psychiatrists - an important goal in today's growing managed care environment. The book has a practical bent, discussing, for example, when and how to refer to a psychiatrist, even describing how to explain this new perspective to a patient. The author's conversational style, as well as many figures, tables, and case illustrations, makes Understanding Biological Psychiatry a guide that is sure to be well-read and often referred to by therapists and physicians, as well as psychiatrists wanting to brush up on the biology of the mind.

Book Antipsychotic Drugs and Their Side Effects

Download or read book Antipsychotic Drugs and Their Side Effects written by Thomas R.E. Barnes and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In line with other volumes in the Neuroscience Perspectives Series, this volume covers the background, pharmacology, molecular biology, and biochemistry of antipsychotic drugs, together with an overview assessment of the therapeutic considerations. Over the past 40 years, the effectiveness of conventional neuroleptic agents for psychotic illness has been offset by a wide range of adverse side-effects, including motor side-effects like parkinsonism. Studies show that lowering doses may still produce the antipsychotic effect while lessening the risk of side-effects. As all available antispychotic drugs are able to block dopamine, specifically D2 receptors, doses below the threshold level for producing acute motor disorder can still be therapeutically effective. With the identification and characterization of multiple dopamine receptors, the possibility of more selective drugs with better side-effect potential has arisen. Other novel antipsychotic agents include D1 receptor blockers, partial dopamine agonists and non-dopamine drugs such as 5-HT receptor blockers, sigma receptor antagonists and NMDA receptor agonists. This volume reviews both the basic science of the conventional and atypical neuroleptics and their present and potential therapeutic use.

Download or read book Drug Studies in the Elderly written by N.R. Cutler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical trials are the most definitive tool for evaluation of the applica bility of clinical investigations. The main objective of clinical investiga tions is to assess the potential value of a therapeutic entity in the treat ment or prophylaxis of a disease or a condition. It is also deemed necessary at this stage to obtain information regarding the undesirable side effects, associated risks, and their interrelationship with clinical assessments. Most of these clinical investigations conform, in some form or fashion, to the guidelines adopted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a given class of compounds. Clinical investigations in the past have not included specific studies in special or subpopulations, e.g., the elderly. Because of an ever-increasing elderly population, newer policies for clinical investigations are now being debated with the recognition of enhanced drug sensitivity in this special population. This key research activity can lead not only to improved health care in the elderly but also to control of its costs.
