Book MHPC Basic Mechanisms and Psychopathology

Download or read book MHPC Basic Mechanisms and Psychopathology written by James Maas and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MHPG: Basic Mechanisms and Psychopathology discusses the interactions between clinical biological psychiatry and basic neuropsychopharmacology. Composed of 10 chapters, this book focuses on the role of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenethyleneglycol (MHPG) in psychiatric disorders, particularly, in depression and mania. The book first examines the enzyme systems that produce MHPG in the brain and the features of these enzymes that could be used to reconcile several contradictions with regard to the origin of urinary MHPG. It then discusses the correlation between changes in impulse flow in central noradrenergic neurons of the locus ceruleus and MHPG levels in brain. The subsequent chapters cover the theoretical issues and empirical data dealing with the interrelationships between plasma and urinary measures of MHPG and central nervous system noradrenergic function. Measurement methods of MHPG in plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, and urine are also presented. The concluding chapters deal with the relevant human studies in patient and nonpatient populations concerning the role of MHPG in depressive disorders, with particular emphasis on clinical studies in childhood and adolescence. This book is of value to clinical biologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychopharmacologists.

Book Psychiatry and Biological Factors

Download or read book Psychiatry and Biological Factors written by Edouard Kurstak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of the volume Psychiatry and Biological Factors is to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the current research linked essentially to virus infections, immunity functions, and mental diseases. In recent years substantial advances have been registered in the physiopathol ogy of mental and neurological disorders. As a result, partial control of certain psychoses, anxiety syndromes, epilepsy, and Parkinson's disease is now possible. However, despite progress in biomedical research, numerous mental and neuro logical disorders afflict up to 15% of all individuals and little is known about the causes, prevention, and treatment of these diseases. Several epidemiological investigations demonstrated a high prevalence of functional psychoses and organic mental disorders, and recent data show that biological components appear as a major etiologic factor. In this respect it could be stressed that viral and immunologic hypotheses should be investigated seriously and systematically in relation to the mechanisms of several mental and neurologi cal diseases. Neuropsychiatric consequences of AIDS related to human immunodeficiency virus infection are now well documented. A variety of behavioral. symptoms and psychiatric syndromes with paranoid features are frequent concomitants of AIDS.

Book Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health

Download or read book Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health written by Michael T. Compton and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., the 16th U.S. Surgeon General, we know a great deal more about treating mental illnesses than about preventing them and promoting mental health. In his foreword to Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health, Dr. Satcher applauds this guide as timely and vital, as it provides new and emerging research on the importance of prevention in mental health. Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health was conceived through discussions within the Prevention Committee of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP), and features contributions from 30 highly regarded clinicians and researchers who are experienced in the treatment and prevention of specific types of mental illnesses. Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health will help you move toward widespread adoption of mental illness prevention in your own practice setting. This important new reference provides practical suggestions to help you work toward preventing, or implementing preventive measures in the treatment of Mood disorders Anxiety disorders Schizophrenia Substance use disorders Suicidality Family violence Conduct disorder and other adolescent disorders Late-life depression, dementia, and mild cognitive impairment Physical illnesses in psychiatric settings Cigarette smoking Compared with other areas of medicine, such as the prevention of infectious disease, our understanding of the prevention of mental illnesses remains in a relatively nascent state, especially in terms of how prevention can be incorporated into routine clinical practice. The authors of the various chapters have endeavored to balance reviewing the available research knowledge with providing guidance for practicing clinicians on how such knowledge can be incorporated into everyday practice. Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health urges clinicians everywhere to inquire about risk factors and protective factors in patients' lives in addition to focusing on the presenting problem. It is the authors' intent to provide mental health professionals with the knowledge and practical applications necessary to be prevention-minded in all of their interactions with patients, families, and the community.

Book Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology

Download or read book Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology written by Henry E. Adams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 967 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook, originally published in 1984, was to provide a compreh- sive review of current clinical descriptions, research , and theories of psychopathology. Descriptive psychopathology is a ?eld that forms the foundation of clinical practice and research in clinical psychology, psychiatry, psychiatric social work, psychiatric nursing, and allied professions in mental health. Since the 1st edition, the editors have devised and updated a handbook to cover both general and speci?c topics in psychopathology that would be useful to researchers, practitioners, and graduate or other advanced students in the mental health and behavioral medicine professions. To implement this plan, we have very carefully chosen colleagues whom we respect for their expertise in particular ?elds. These authors include both clinicians and researchers who have outstanding national reputations, as well as more junior behavioral scientists and clinicians who, in our opinion, will achieve similar recognition in the future. The excellent chapters in this book lead us to believe that we have chosen wisely. We would like to express our appreciation to these authors for their outstanding contributions and cooperation.

Book Handbook of Substance Misuse and Addictions

Download or read book Handbook of Substance Misuse and Addictions written by Vinood B. Patel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 3261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substance misuse and addictions are a public health issue. They affect the well-being of each community and nation as a whole. It is, therefore, necessary to identify, educate, and treat individuals who are addicted to substances. Policies and procedures go hand-in-hand with public health education and safety. The science behind the public health issues of one drug may be applicable to other drugs as well. However, marshalling all of the aforementioned information into a single source is somewhat difficult due to the wide array of material. The Editors address this by compiling the research in this single reference work that serves as a "one-stop-shopping" approach to everything readers need to know about the scientific basis of public health and addictions and agents of misuse. Apart from active agents that have a plant or chemical basis, there is a need to consider that there are other forms of addiction which may have common modes of causality or prevention. These include food addiction, gaming, gambling, and other non-drug addictions. These types of addiction may be related to the addiction of drugs. The Handbook of Substance Misuse and Addictions: From Biology to Public Health offers a holistic understanding of the relationship between public health and substance misuse. The text provides a common platform upon which other forms of addiction or substance misuse can be understood and treated. Addiction processes involve understanding the biological processes as well as behavior, psychology, sociology, and public health, all of which are interlinked. This Handbook is a useful reference for lecturers, students, researchers, practitioners, and other professionals in public health, addiction science, epidemiology, health education, health promotion, and health sciences.
