Book Han man

Download or read book Han man written by Hans Giese and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-11-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a teenage frontline medic in the German Air Force and as a prisoner of war, this book of recollections by Han-man will take the reader back to the chaotic times of Germany's total defeat at the end of the Second World War. It is also a book full of fascinating and sometimes amusing anecdotes and revelations. The story begins, early in 1945, with the firebombing of his hometown Magdeburg. Afterwards, he was sent at the age of 18, to the front lines to assist a surgeon who never showed up. Wounded and captured by Soviet military forces, he was forced into walking endless exhausting miles leading to the gates of Auschwitz to become a starving prisoner of war. Released, Han-man returned home only to find himself a prisoner again, this time confined by what Winston Churchill called "The Iron Curtain" in the then Soviet occupied regions of East Germany."

Book The Great Han

Download or read book The Great Han written by Kevin Carrico and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Han is an ethnographic study of the Han Clothing Movement, a neotraditionalist and racial nationalist movement that has emerged in China since 2001. Participants come together both online and in person in cities across China to revitalize their utopian vision of the authentic “Great Han” and corresponding “real China” through pseudotraditional ethnic dress, reinvented Confucian ritual, and anti-foreign sentiment. Analyzing the movement’s ideas and practices, this book argues that the vision of a pure, perfectly ordered, ethnically homogeneous, and secure society is in fact a fantasy constructed in response to the challenging realities of the present. Yet this national imaginary is reproduced precisely through its own perpetual elusiveness. The Great Han is a pioneering analysis of Han identity, nationalism, and social movements in a rapidly changing China.

Book The Men Who Governed Han China

Download or read book The Men Who Governed Han China written by Michael Loewe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were prominent figures in the formative stages of China’s imperial government affected by changes in the theory and practice of government and its institutions? Calling on documentary evidence, some found only recently, Dr. Loewe examines local administration, the careers of officials, military organisation, the nobilities and kingdoms, the concepts of imperial sovereignty and the part played by the emperors. Special attention is paid to the anomalies in the historical records; tabulated lists of officials and other items summarise the evidence on which the chapters are based. Historical change and intellectual controversies are seen in the growth and decay of organs of administration, in the careers of individual men and women and the personal part that they played in shaping events.

Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER INTERNATIONAL PRIZE • A “formally daring, emotionally devastating, and deeply political” (The New York Times Book Review) exploration of personal grief through the prism of the color white, from the internationally bestselling author of The Vegetarian “Stunningly beautiful writing . . . delicate and gorgeous . . . one of the smartest reflections on what it means to remember those we’ve lost.”—NPR While on a writer’s residency, a nameless narrator focuses on the color white to creatively channel her inner pain. Through lyrical, interconnected stories, she grapples with the tragedy that has haunted her family, attempting to make sense of her older sister’s death using the color white. From trying to imagine her mother’s first time producing breast milk to watching the snow fall and meditating on the impermanence of life, she weaves a poignant, heartfelt story of the omnipresence of grief and the ways we perceive the world around us. In captivating, starkly beautiful language, The White Book offers a multilayered exploration of color and its absence, of the tenacity and fragility of the human spirit, and of our attempts to graft new life from the ashes of destruction.

Book European Romanticism

Download or read book European Romanticism written by Stephen Prickett and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 1065 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romanticism was always culturally diverse. Though English-language anthologies have previously tended to see Romanticism as predominantly British, the term itself actually originated in Germany, where it became the banner of a Europe-wide movement involving the profound intellectual and aesthetic changes which we now associate with modernity. This anthology is the first to place British Romanticism within a comprehensive and multi-lingual European context, showing how ideas and writers interconnected across national and linguistic boundaries. By reprinting everything in the original languages, together with an English translation of all non-English material in parallel on the opposite page, it offers a new intellectual map of Romanticism. Material is thematically arranged as follows: - Art & Aesthetics - The Self - History - Language - Hermeneutics & Theology - Nature - The Exotic - Science While focusing on European texts, the inclusion of essays on their North American and Japanese reception means that Romanticism can be seen as a global phenomenon, influencing a surprising number of the ways in which the modern world sees itself.
