Book Hamsard and Academy Music

Download or read book Hamsard and Academy Music written by Great Britain. Competition Commission and published by Stationery Office Books (TSO). This book was released on 2007 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both companies are involved in the live music industry in the UK, for example, Hamsard manages the Wembley Arena under contract, as well as owning the Mean Fiddler Music Group, including the Forum, Astoria Jazz Cafâ and Mean Fiddler venues in London; whilst Academy owns and manages 11 live music venues in the UK including Carling Academy Brixton and Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. The Commission's report focuses on two separate services supplied by the merging parties: live music venue management and live music promotion services. It concludes that the proposed acquisition of a controlling interest in Academy Music Holdings by Hamsard would lead to a substantial lessening of competition in relation to certain live music venues in London, and specifies certain venues that must be sold to a purchaser approved by the Commission if the merger is to proceed.

Book Policy and the Popular

Download or read book Policy and the Popular written by David Looseley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an interdisciplinary exploration of the complexities of ‘popular’ culture as a category of public policy. It approaches the notions of ‘cultural policy’ and ‘popular culture’ flexibly, examining what each comes to mean, explicitly or implicitly, in relation to the other. This generates a rich variety of approaches, but also a number of identifiable commonalities. We start from the proposition that 'popular culture' is largely absent as an explicit category of arts policy and debate today. The ‘arts’ are still, in practice, construed in terms of elite culture (despite claims to the contrary), while artefacts such as popular music, television, fashion, and so on are assumed to figure among the cultural or creative ‘industries’, giving the popular a set of narrowly economic, professional and commodity connotations. And yet, the popular is, in a range of ways, powerfully present as an implicit dimension of public policy and as a catalyst of cultural practices and attitudes. This apparent paradox underpins the proposal. The book is a collaboration between two UK-based institutions: the University of Leeds’s Popular Cultures Research Network and the well established Centre for Cultural Policy Studies at the University of Warwick. This book was originally published as a special issue of International Journal of Cultural Policy.

Book The History of Live Music in Britain 1968 1984

Download or read book The History of Live Music in Britain 1968 1984 written by Simon Frith and published by Lund Humphries Publishers. This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, there has been a significant gap in work on the social history of music in Britain from 1950 to the present day. The three volumes of Live Music in Britain address this gap and do so through a unique prism¿that of live music. The key theme of the books is the changing nature of the live music industry in the UK, focused upon popular music but including all musical genres. Via this focus, the books offer new insights into a number of other areas, including the relationship between commercial and public funding of music, changing musical fashions and tastes, the impact of changing technologies, the changing balance of power within the music industries, the role of the state in regulating and promoting various musical activities within an increasingly globalised music economy, and the effects of demographic and other social changes on music culture. Drawing on new archival research, a wide range of academic and non-academic secondary sources, participant observation and a series of interviews with key personnel, the books have the potential to become landmark works within Popular Music Studies and broader cultural history. The second volume covers the period from Hyde Park to the Hacienda (1968¿84).
