Book Hamlet s Dreams

Download or read book Hamlet s Dreams written by David Schalkwyk and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hamlet's Dreams brings together the Robben Island Prison of Nelson Mandela and the prison that is Denmark for Shakespeare's Hamlet. David Shalkwyk uses the circulation of the so-called 'Robben Island Shakespeare', a copy of the Alexander edition of the Complete Works that was secretly circulated, annotated and signed by a group of Robben Island political prisoner in the 1970s (including Nelson Mandela), to examine the representation and experience of imprisonment in South African prison memoirs and Shakespeare's Hamlet. The book looks at the ways in which oppressive spaces or circumstances restrict the ways in which personal identity can be formed or formulated in relation to others. The 'bad dreams' that keep Hamlet from considering himself the 'king of infinite space' are, it argues, the need for other people that becomes especially evident in situations of real or psychological imprisonment.

Book Dream Replacements How Hamlet enacts his Oedipal Desires

Download or read book Dream Replacements How Hamlet enacts his Oedipal Desires written by Ashley Webb and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 3.3, Emory University, language: English, abstract: In "The Interpretation of Dreams", Freud posits the theory that dreams are manifestations of unconscious and repressed desires. He further states that male children often have an unconscious Oedipal desire to kill their father and replace him by being with their mother. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the titular character experiences this desire and it manifests itself in various dream-like ways. Since his uncle Claudius has already performed the actions that Hamlet himself desired, Hamlet struggles with anger, jealousy, and confusion as he tries to both suppress those feelings and come to terms with them. His conflicting desires manifest themselves in odd behaviors that those surrounding Hamlet take for madness. Hamlet's dream-like experiences take several forms. As his subconscious takes over, Hamlet's suppressed desires are manifested. The first instance of this is the appearance of his father's ghost and Hamlet's discussion with that ghost. Whether or not the ghost is a real ghost, it plays the role of Hamlet's subconscious for him. The ghost is able to say things that are suppressed in Hamlet's subconscious and he is unable to admit to himself until the ghost says them aloud.

Book Looking for Hamlet

Download or read book Looking for Hamlet written by Marvin W. Hunt and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-12-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mysterious, melancholic, brooding Hamlet has gripped and fascinated four hundred years' of readers, trying to "find" and know him as he searches for and avenges his father's name. Setting itself apart from the usual discussions about Hamlet, Hunt here demonstrates that Hamlet is much more than we take him to be. Much more than the sum of his parts--more than just tragic, sexy youth and more than just vain cruelty--Hamlet is a reflection of our own aspirations and neuroses. Looking for Hamlet investigates our many searches for Hamlet, from their origins in Danish mythology through the complex problems of early printed texts, through the centuries of shifting interpretations of the young prince to our own time when Hamlet is more compelling and perplexing than ever before. Hunt presents Hamlet as a sort of missing person, the idealized being inside oneself. This search for the missing Hamlet, Hunt argues, reveals a present absence readers pursue as a means of finding and identifying ourselves.

Book Dream Sequences in Shakespeare

Download or read book Dream Sequences in Shakespeare written by Meg Harris Williams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a new approach to Shakespeare’s plays, exploring them as dream-thought in the modern psychoanalytic sense of unconscious thinking. Through his commitment to poetic language, Shakespeare offers images and dramatic sequences that illustrate fundamental developmental conflicts, the solutions for which are not preconceived but evolve through the process of dramatisation. In this volume, Meg Harris Williams explores the fundamental distinction between the surface meanings of plot or argument and the deep grammar of dreamlife, applied not only to those plays known as ‘dream-plays’ but also to critical sequences throughout Shakespeare’s oeuvre. Through a post-Kleinian model based on the thinking of Bion, Meltzer, and Money-Kyrle, this book sheds new light on both Shakespeare’s own relation to the play and on the identificatory processes of the playwright, reader, or audience. Dream Sequences in Shakespeare is important reading for psychoanalysts, playwrights, and students.

Book A Midsummer Night s Dream The Oxford Shakespeare

Download or read book A Midsummer Night s Dream The Oxford Shakespeare written by William Shakespeare and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Midsummer Night's Dream is perhaps the best loved of Shakepeare's plays. It brings together aristocrats, workers, and fairies in a wood outside Athens, and from there the enchantment begins. Simple and engaging on the surface, it is none the less a highly original and sophisticated work, remarkable for both its literary and its theatrical mastery. It is one of the very few of Shakespeare's plays which do not draw on narrative sources, which suggests that it reflects his deepest imaginative concerns to an unusual degree. In his introduction Peter Holland pays particular attention to dreams and dreamers, and to Shakespeare's construction of a world of night and shadows. Both here and in his commentary he explores the play's extensive performance history to illustrate the wide range of interpretations of which it is capable. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
