Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of Sir Ian Hamilton VCs command of the Gallipoli campaign. Appointed by Kitchener after the failure of the initial Allied naval offensive in the Dardanelles, Hamilton was to lead the ambitious amphibious landings that were intended to open the way to Constantinople. In the event, however, opportunities immediately after the landings were squandered and, in the face of unexpectedly effective Turkish resistance, soon stalled in attritional trench warfare like that on the Western Front. ?Hamilton has often been criticized for this failure and in many ways seen to typify the stereotype of a British general clinging to outdated Victorian thinking. Yet this fresh reappraisal, drawing on original archival research, shows that Hamilton did display some progressive ideas and a realization that warfare was rapidly changing. Like all generals of this period he faced the challenge of unprecedented technological and tactical revolution as well as the political and media battle. It is as a case study of command in these circumstances that Evan Mcgilvray's assessment of Hamilton will be most valued.

Book excerpt: The Gallipoli campaign was launched in April 1915 in an effort to knock Turkey out of the war but the force that was deployed was too small to achieve its aim. Moreover, the commander, General Sir Ian Hamilton was at fault in the way he conducted his campaign. Never happier than when he was in the thick of action, Hamilton was an excellent tactician but, by 1915, and in a situation like Gallipoli, his style of leadership was outdated. This book examines why Hamilton failed at Gallipoli and shows how, in spite of that failure and it being his last command, he became a well-respected military prophet who many several perceptive predictions about the future of warfare.

Book excerpt: A Bird's Eye View of a Military Disaster In October 1914, the Ottoman Empire allied with Germany and Austria in the Great War, cutting off the supply route to Russia through the Dardanelles. In response, Great Britain and France undertook a daring operation: the largest amphibious landing ever attempted to force open the Dardanelles, threaten Constantinople, and force the Ottomans to surrender. Commanding the campaign was Sir Ian Hamilton, who had witnessed the dawn of modern trench warfare in Manchuria only ten years earlier. The battle would be played out in the Gallipoli Peninsula, and become known as Gallipoli. This is Sir Ian Hamilton's personal diary of the Dardanelles campaign, and the disaster that followed - a catastrophe that caused over half a million casualties across both sides, ended his military career, and helped forge the identities of Australia and New Zealand.

Book Gallipoli Sniper

Download or read book Gallipoli Sniper written by John Hamilton and published by Pan Australia. This book was released on 2009 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful and very different account of war and its effect on those who fightThe Anzac battlefield on Gallipoli was made for snipers. Scrub, cliffs, spurs and hills meant that both Anzac and Turkish positions often overlooked one another. The unwary or unlucky were prey to snipers on both sides, and the sudden crack of a gunshot and instant death were an ever-present menace. The most successful and most feared sniper of the Gallipoli campaign was Billy Sing, a Light Horseman from Queensland who was almost unique among the Australian troops in having a Chinese-born father. A combination of patience, stealth and an incredible eye made him utterly deadly, with the incredible - and horrifying - figure of over 200 credited "kills". John Hamilton, author of the bestselling Goodbye Cobber, God Bless You, has written an extraordinary account of a hidden side of the campaign - the snipers' war. Following Sing from his recruitment onwards, Hamilton takes us on a journey into the squalor, dust, blood and heroism of Gallipoli, seen from the unique viewpoint of the sniper.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australia, Anzac Day, the anniversary of the first landings at Gallipoli, is one of the most important dates in the national calendar. Yet in Britain, the campaign is largely forgotten. The key to this contrast lies in the way in which the campaign's history has been recorded. To many Australians, the Anzac legend is a romantic war myth that proclaims the prowess of Australian participants in the campaign. It is an exercise in nation-building. In Britain, the campaign is also remembered in romantic terms, but the purpose here is to assuage the pain of defeat. Reconsidering Gallipoli broadens the debate over the cultural history of the First World War beyond the Western Front. The final chapter traces the influence of the early accounts on subsequent portrayals including Alan Moorehead's 1956 book, Bean's post 1965 rehabilitation, Peter Weir's 1981 film, and revisionist attacks on the legend.

Book Jean Lady Hamilton 1861 1941

Download or read book Jean Lady Hamilton 1861 1941 written by Celia Lee and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A pleasure to read. It’s predominantly about the life of Jean Hamilton’s husband Ian as an officer during the Great War and life for both before and after.” —UK Historian Jean, Lady Hamilton’s diaries remained forgotten and hidden in the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, King’s College, London, for fifty years. The story begins with the young couples’ wedding, a dazzling bride, Jean Muir, marrying a star-struck Major Ian Hamilton. The daughter of the millionaire businessman Sir John Muir, Jean had all the money whilst Hamilton was penniless. Having spent their early married years in India, the Hamiltons returned and set up house in the prestigious Hyde Park area of London, also eventually buying Lullenden Manor, East Grinstead, that they purchased as a country home from Winston Churchill when he could no longer afford it. Churchill in particular was like family in the Hamiltons’ home; he used to go there and practice his speeches, and painted alongside Jean to whom he sold his first painting. Jean chronicled Ian’s long army career that culminated in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. The failure there ended her husband’s distinguished career and almost ended Churchill’s as he had to leave his job as First Lord of the Admiralty. This account is Lady Hamilton’s “attempt to chronicle her husband’s life as a top-flight but penniless soldier, this at a time when young Winston Churchill . . . was emerging from his own distinguished and very colourful military career to enter a life of politics . . . Jean Hamilton is one of those larger than life people of whom we know very little until a book such as Celia’s comes along” (Books Monthly).

Book Sir Ian Hamilton s Despatches from the Dardenelles Etc

Download or read book Sir Ian Hamilton s Despatches from the Dardenelles Etc written by Evelyn Field-Marshal and published by . This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Sir Ian Hamilton was a brave ( twice recommended for the VC); cultured (he wrote and published his own poetry) and civilised sldier - with a breadth of interests and intellect rare indeed in the often hidebound ranks of the British army at the acme of Empire. Unfortunately, Hamilton was given an impossible job when he was appointed Commander of the expedition to take and hold the Gallipoli peninsular in 1915. Aged 62, and not universally admired in the Army, he lacked the ruthlessness of truly great commanders. After the element of surprise was lost when warhips trying to rush the Dardanelles struck Turkish mines; there were delays as Hamilton prepared for the landings. Lacking landing craft, the landings were fiercely opposed; the terrain was harsh and the Turkish opposition so fierce that little headway was made, despite landings elsewhere on the peninsular. These despatches, published while the fighting was still underway, pay ribute to the bravery of his troops, but cannot disguise the fact that the grand operation had become a disaster.
