Book Hal Schumacher the Prince of the New York Giants

Download or read book Hal Schumacher the Prince of the New York Giants written by Roger Glen Melin and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hal Schumacher, or Prince Hal as he was commonly referred to by the scribes of the day, played with the New York Giants during some of their very best years, and played along side some of the best players the game has known - Mel Ott, Bill Terry, and his pitching partner Carl Hubbell to name but a few, all of whom are in the baseball Hall of Fame. Although Hal was proud of his accomplishments as a pitcher, he kept that pride to himself. And although willing to give interviews to baseball writers of the day, he tended to keep them short and rarely placed himself on the same pedestals that other players did. The New York Giants of the 1930s played in 3 World Series contests: 1933, 1936, and 1937, the latter two against the great Yankees teams of the day, and Schumacher was an integral part of those series. He also was chosen to play in the very first All Star game in 1933. His newspaper nickname of Prince Hal was chosen as the perfect complement to King Carl Hubbell, one of the greatest pitchers of the time, and a teammate of Schumacher during most of his playing days. Many have referred to them as one of the best righty-lefty combination to have ever taken the mound during their peak years. This biography of Hal Schumacher takes us year by year through the life of Prince Hal, gives us a history both before and following his playing days, and is most valuable to the reader because it gives us some insight into a quality baseball pitcher and a quality human being.

Book excerpt: The New York Giants have sent more men to the Baseball Hall of Fame than any other team, a distinction that only begins to hint at the place this storied franchise holds in the long history of America's national pastime. Between 1883 and 1957, a span of 75 summers, the Giants were one of professional sports' great dynasties. Aside from the 17 National League pennants and 8 world pennants the team won during this period, there were the unique personalities and imperishable moments that remain so much a part of the lore of the game: John McGraw's pugnacity, Christy Mathewson's fadeaway, Fred Snodgrass's muff, Mel Ott's leg kick, Carl Hubbell's scroogie, Bobby Thomson's home run, and Willie Mays' catch. Even the Giants' ballpark, the Polo Grounds, had a personality of its own, with a center field that seemed as expansive as Utah and abbreviated foul lines that turned many an ordinary fly ball into a mighty home run.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first pitch at the original Polo Grounds on May 1, 1883, to the night of August 9, 2002, at Pacific Bell Park, where Barry Bonds crushed his 600th career home run -- and beyond -- the New York and San Francisco Giants have been one of the most successful -- and popular -- franchises in Major League Baseball. They have won five World Series championships (plus three 19th-century titles) and 20 National League pennants. Some 50 Giants are enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York (more than any other franchise). Now, all the highlights and the individuals who provided them are captured in this comprehensive history of the club. The Giants Encyclopedia is more than just a running narrative of the franchise's history. It chronicles all 120 seasons in minute detail (the world championships, pennant winners, near-misses and disappointments). The book features biographies of more than 100 players (from Hall of Famers like Willie Mays and Christy Mathewson to present-day stars like Barry Bonds and Robb Nen), plus prominent owners (such as John Day, Horace and Charles Stoneham, Bob Lurie and Peter Magowan); front office executives (like Chub Feeney, Al Rosen and Brian Sabean); managers (such as John McGraw, Leo Durocher, Roger Craig and Dusty Baker); and broadcasters (Russ Hodges, Lon Simmons and Hank Greenwald).

Book The New York Giants

Download or read book The New York Giants written by Frank Graham and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final chapter of Frank Graham’s dynamic history of the New York Giants is entitled “With One Swipe of His Bat.” For sheer drama and a colossal slice of baseball legend, the core of that chapter cannot be topped—Bobby Thomson’s “shot heard ’round the world,” the three-run homer in the 1951 playoff series that determined that the Giants—not the Dodgers—would win the pennant. Graham, of course, starts at the beginning, 1883, the year the Giants were born. With characteristic panache, Graham tells us how it was: “This was New York in the elegant eighties and these were the Giants, fashioned in elegance, playing on the Polo Grounds. . . . It was the New York of the brownstone house and the gaslit streets, of the top hat and the hansom cab, of oysters and champagne and perfecto cigars, of [actress] Ada Rehan and Oscar Wilde and the young John L. Sullivan. It also was the New York of the Tenderloin and the Bowery.” One of fifteen team histories commissioned by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in the 1940s and 1950s, The New York Giants was first published in 1952. Some of the most colorful characters in the game pass through these pages as well as some of baseball’s brightest legends, many of whom appear in the book’s twenty-three photographs. Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson, Mel Ott, Frankie Frisch, Carl Hubbell, and Bill Terry star among the headliners in the illustrious history of the Giants. Other Hall of Famers include John McGraw, “Beauty” Dave Bancroft, “Iron Man” Joe McGinnity, Leo Durocher, Buck Ewing, Amos Rusie, John Montgomery Ward, and Ross Youngs. In his foreword, Ray Robinson gives his impression of Frank Graham: “I had been reading Graham’s warm ‘conversation pieces’ for some years, first in the New York Sun, then in the Journal-American, but I had no idea how kind and modest he was. The columnist Red Smith, Graham’s good friend, once referred to him as ‘a digger for truth, a reporter of facts . . . with an incredibly accurate ear and an implausibly retentive memory.’ To Smith, Graham was the finest sports columnist of his time.”

Book Mad as Hell

Download or read book Mad as Hell written by Dave Itzkoff and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behind-the-scenes story of the making of the iconic movie "Network," which transformed the way we think about television and the way television thinks about us "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore " Those words, spoken by an unhinged anchorman named Howard Beale, "the mad prophet of the airwaves," took America by storm in 1976, when "Network" became a sensation. With a superb cast (including Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch, and Robert Duvall) directed by Sidney Lumet, the film won four Academy Awards and indelibly shaped how we think about corporate and media power. In "Mad As Hell," Dave Itzkoff of "The New York Times" recounts the surprising and dramatic story of how "Network" made it to the screen. Such a movie rarely gets made any more one man's vision of the world, independent of studio testing or market research. And that man was Paddy Chayefsky, the tough, driven, Oscar-winning screenwriter whose vision outlandish for its time is all too real today. Itzkoff uses interviews with the cast and crew, as well as Chayefsky's notes, letters, and drafts to re-create the action in front of and behind the camera at a time of swirling cultural turmoil. The result is a riveting account that enriches our appreciation of this prophetic and still-startling film. Itzkoff also speaks with today's leading broadcasters and filmmakers to assess "Network"'s lasting impact on television and popular culture. They testify to the enduring genius of Paddy Chayefsky, who foresaw the future and whose life offers an unforgettable lesson about the true cost of self-expression."

Book Baseball and the Mythic Moment

Download or read book Baseball and the Mythic Moment written by James D. Hardy, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-02-12 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While moments come and go, and popular trends are created only to be consumed and replaced, a small handful of events are able to transcend place and time to become widely shared cultural touchstones. Baseball, with its longevity, reverence for character and perseverance, and symbolism of American values, has produced a number of these modern myths--people, games and events that transcend society's love for the ephemeral to attain collective cultural significance. The Babe's called shot and Ripken's 2,131st are more than significant moments in baseball. They are culturally relevant events that contribute to an American mythology. This book examines how certain baseball moments became mythic, and why some moments are culturally persistent while others are limited in importance to the confines of sport. After a discussion of baseball in myth and memory, and the effect of the media on both, chapters draw a distinction between the merely famous (or infamous) and the mythic act, whether it's physical (Bobby Thomson) or symbolic (Jackie Robinson); matchups, whether individual (Alexander vs. Lazzeri) or team (Red Sox-Yankees 1978 playoff); clubs, both those that achieved (1927 Yankees) and that choked (1964 Phillies); and franchises, including the winners (Yankees) and the losers (Cubs).

Download or read book Joe Cambria written by Paul Scimonelli and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most prolific scouts in baseball history, Joe Cambria almost single-handedly saved the Washington Senators from ruin. Signing a stream of young players from Cuba--as many as 20 per season for three decades--he fed the team affordable talent and kept them competitive during World War II, when many front-liners went to the front lines. Cambria subverted baseball's color line years before Jackie Robinson broke it, signing light-skinned Cubans--many of African descent--who could pass in the all-white Major Leagues. This first ever biography traces his memorable career, including the shady hiring practices and flamboyant deals that drew rulings from the bench of Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

Book 30 000 Home Runs

Download or read book 30 000 Home Runs written by Harvey Brandwein and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Step back into the golden era of sports memorabilia collecting: the 1980s and 1990s. A nostalgic time before cellphones were ubiquitous and the internet was just budding, when collectors eagerly flocked to ‘card shows’ to pursue their passions. Harvey Brandwein and Stephen Hisler, two former middle school teachers from the South Bronx, rose to prominence as promoters of the nation’s most successful and esteemed sports memorabilia shows. Hosting events graced by players with a combined total of around 30,000 home runs, their shows were a collector’s dream. 30,000 Home Runs is Harvey’s personal account of these extraordinary events. It celebrates the great athletes who participated, signing autographs and connecting with thousands of fans across the country. Harvey played a pivotal role in uniting iconic sports figures and teams, creating unforgettable moments and fostering a deep, enduring love among fans. For the first time, the tales of these players are shared, offering sports enthusiasts a treasure trove of joy and laughter. This book not only chronicles the excitement of the shows and private signings but also delves into the relationships forged with some of the greatest sports legends of the twentieth century. It’s a homage to ‘The National Pastime,’ a snapshot of a bygone era in sports fandom.

Book Gabby Hartnett

Download or read book Gabby Hartnett written by William F. McNeil and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gabby Harnett is believed by many to be the greatest catcher of all time. This work chronicles Hartnett's life from his early years in Millville, Massachusetts, through his twenty-year career with the Chicago Cubs as player and manager, his time in various capacities in the minor leagues and with the New York Giants and Kansas City Athletics, to his post-major league career as a businessman in Chicago. His childhood, early baseball experiences with the local team and with a nearby prep school, and his first professional baseball season with the Worcester Boosters of the Eastern League are covered in detail. Hartnett's major league career as the catcher for the Cubs is well-documented, including his near career-ending arm injury in 1929, the 1932 World Series that featured Babe Ruth's legendary "called shot," and Hartnett's famous "homer in the gloamin" against the Pittsburgh Pirates that propelled Chicago to the 1938 National League pennant. The author also compares Hartnett's statistics to those of his famous contemporaries, Mickey Cochrane and Bill Dickey, on a year-by-year basis.

Book At a Loss to Eternity

Download or read book At a Loss to Eternity written by Thomas Porky McDonald and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-04-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In direct contrast to the plethora of winning is everything material that has incrementally grown since the 1990s, Thomas Porky McDonald, poet and writer, offers up At a Loss to Eternity, an admittedly arbitrary look at a number of fine baseball teams that, as the subtitle states, Didnt Win it All. Spanning from the early days of the modern World Series Era to the present, McDonald attempts to enlighten those who are willing, as well as those seemingly scarred by the burgeoning attitude that everyone is a loser except the one that wins the ultimate Championship. League Champions who lost the World Series, like the legendary 1906 Tinker to Evers to Chance Chicago Cubs or Milwaukees Brew Crew 82 take their proper place amongst the elites that they ultimately lost the Fall Classic to. Remarkable second place teams, such as the 1942 Brooklyn Dodgers and the 1961 Detroit Tigers, each winners of 100+ regular season games, are also afforded a forum here. Storied franchises currently in the throes of long Championship droughts, from Chicagos Cubs and White Sox to the Cleveland Indians, are considered, along with their former baseball purgatory roommate, the Boston Red Sox, who finally took it all in 2004. At a Loss to Eternity asks the reader to simply recall what professional sports, and baseball in particular, are really about. The joy that those who love the Game get from it cannot be dismissed by a growing inane win or die attitude fostered by mass media and accepted incoherently in too many places. Winning is wonderful, and all athletes should certainly strive to win every time they enter the playing field. Nonetheless, any player that gives every ounce of effort they can toward the goal of winning could never be a loser, despite what those whove probably never accomplished anything themselves would have you believe. Winning isnt everything, though aspiring to win surely should be. The Red Sox 2004 World Championship exorcized many ghosts for some, but the truth is that many wonderful teams and a number of All-Time stars that did not win a World Title will always shine, even though they never managed to secure a ring. So much so that At a Loss to Eternity is, in fact, ultimately a tale of winners.
