Download or read book A Taste for Home written by Toufoul Abou-Hodeib and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "home" is a quintessentially quotidian topic, yet one at the center of global concerns: Consumption habits, aesthetic preferences, international trade, and state authority all influence the domestic sphere. For middle-class residents of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Beirut, these debates took on critical importance. As Beirut was reshaped into a modern city, legal codes and urban projects pressed at the home from without, and imported commodities and new consumption habits transformed it from within. Drawing from rich archives in Arabic, Ottoman, French, and English—from advertisements and catalogues to previously unstudied government documents—A Taste for Home places the middle-class home at the intersection of local and global transformations. Middle-class domesticity took form between changing urbanity, politicization of domesticity, and changing consumption patterns. Transcending class-based aesthetic theories and static notions of "Westernization" alike, this book illuminates the self-representations and the material realities of an emerging middle class. Toufoul Abou-Hodeib offers a cultural history of late Ottoman Beirut that is at once global in the widest sense of the term and local enough to enter the most private of spaces.

Book excerpt: It is the year 2497, and Earth is about to come under attack by its former inhabitants. For nearly five centuries humans have peacefully coexisted with the Neanderthal descendants who they banished to the planet Teconea. But now, the Neanderthals want their home world back. They have amassed a vast armada, well concealed in the ion storms of the Orion system until Danny Stryker, a Federation trader, stumbles upon their secret. Humankind's best hope of survival against the powerful Teconean Empire, the Federation Defense System, is nearly complete. A potent new energy generator in the shape of an obelisk is the last key element needed to complete the FDS. Stryker discovers that the gilded obelisk is lost in time. The only hope for survival is to send someone back to nineteenth century California to retrieve it before the Teconean invasion is launched. An aficionado of the Old West, Stryker eagerly volunteers to make the trip. Fitting into the nineteenth century has its challenges, and to make matters worse, Teconean spies have infiltrated deep into the ranks of the Space Corps. The race through time and space is on. www.BradAiken.com

Book excerpt: This is a story that will compels you to read page after page until your eyes can no longer focus on the print. This is a story you will never forget. Chapter after Chapter this story has impressed the toughest critics with its tale of demonic possession. This is an old fashion ghost story that will make you want to sleep with the lights on. This story is about what the mother of two clairvoyant children felt while she lived the scariest time in her life. It explains the reasons why a demon was able to survive for century’s, and possess not just the previous owner of their new home and the stepson, of her new friend Diane Lewis. Susan has suffered more than one tragedy in her life, and unknown to her. The Cross family, and her friend Diane Lewis a surviving family member of its latest victim have been chosen to help explain to the world; how the last two people who were possessed by this demon, were not the psychopaths everyone believed them to be. It shows the emotional trauma victims’ families live with intertwined with the emotions felt by the demons two last hosts. Susan thanks to a special soul; sees how the criminals as individuals tried to battle the demon on their own, and how they lost their battle. Every good lie is believable because it does contain some truth. Because of that fact, the possessed people who at one time did at one time wish ill will on someone. Believed they were responsible for the crimes. That is the reason why over centuries, even the ones who discovered the demon possessing them committed these evil acts. They were as individuals held responsible, and punished for the crimes. They were too late to expose the demon since possession as an explanation, was ignored. This demon was arrogant because it had survived unexposed for centuries. The world has always believed it was the person it possessed, was solely responsible for the crimes that were committed. Until now.
Download or read book Arab Women Novelists written by Joseph T. Zeidan and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the contribution of women to the Arabic novel, both in subject matter and form. It begins by tracing the struggle over women's rights in the Arab world, particularly the gradual improvement in women's access to education--the first area in which women made significant gains. Subsequent chapters discuss Arab women writers' remarkable talents and determination to overcome the barriers of a male-dominated culture; survey the 1950s and 1960s, during which women's writing gained momentum and more women writers emerged; and address the shift in emphasis and attitude that women's literature underwent in the late 1960s, especially following the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, when women novelists began to place more stress on international politics. Zeidan adapts Western-based feminist literary theory to a discussion of Arab women's literature but refrains from imposing that theory inappropriately on literature whose context differs significantly. He compares the women's movements in Arab and Western cultures and the development of women's literature in those cultures, and uses these comparisons to highlight similarities and differences between them as well as to consider how one affected the other. His analysis culminates in the early 1980s--the end of the formative years--when women's writing had become a familiar part of Arabic literature in general and a positive reflection on the collective Arab consciousness.
Download or read book Judy Liza Robert Freddie David Sue Me written by Stevie Phillips and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No star burned more ferociously than Judy Garland. And nobody witnessed Garland's fierce talent at closer range than Stevie Phillips. During the Mad Men era, Stevie Philips was a young woman muscling her way into the manscape of Manhattan's glittering office towers. After a stint as a secretary, she began working for Freddie Fields and David Begelman at Music Corporation of America (MCA) under the glare of legendary über-agent Lew Wasserman. When MCA blew apart, Fields and Begelman created Creative Management Associates (CMA), and Stevie went along. Fields convinced Garland to come on board, and Stevie became, as she puts it, "Garland's shadow," putting out fires-figurative and literal-in order to get her to the next concert in the next down-and-out town. Philips paints a portrait of Garland at the bitter end and although it was at times a nightmare, Philips says, "She became my teacher," showing her "how to" and "how not to" live. Stevie also represented Garland's fiercely talented daughter, Liza Minnelli, as well as Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Henry Fonda, George Roy Hill, Bob Fosse, Cat Stevens, and David Bowie. She produced both films and Broadway shows and counted her colleague, the legendary agent Sue Mengers, among her closest confidantes. Now Stevie Phillips reveals all in Judy & Liza & Robert & Freddie & David & Sue & Me..., a tough-talking memoir by a woman who worked with some of the biggest names in show business. It's a helluva ride.

Download or read book Comes the Peace written by Daja Wangchuk Meston and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I packed a blue Samsonite suitcase with my belongings -- a couple of pairs of jeans and shirts, UB40 tapes, the Swiss army knife I had stolen from my mother, my Tibetan prayer book, and a red plastic Camay soap dish I bought in Dharamsala that had become a good luck charm for me." With these, all his worldly possessions at the age of seventeen, Daja Wangchuk Meston caught an airliner to America, the unfamiliar land of which he was a citizen, and began his arduous personal journey to discover and mend his long-severed ties to his family, his country, and, in a very real sense, his own identity. In this moving memoir, the author tells the incredible story of a young man who used his Buddhist upbringing and the love of a good woman -- his young wife -- to learn that forgiving others can play a critical role in healing a damaged soul. Daja had much to forgive. In the early 1970s, at the age of three, he was taken by his hippie American parents to Nepal and left in the care of a Tibetan family. The Tibetans in turn placed him in a Buddhist monastery where, at the age of six, he was ordained to be a monk. There, in scenes reminiscent of the novels of Charles Dickens, he was ostracized by the other boy monks, who taunted him for his Caucasian physical traits, left so hungry he stole scraps of bread, and slept on a flea-infested straw mat. He was an outsider in an insular monastic world, unable to understand what had befallen him and longing for the warmth of his mother's embrace. His mother became a Buddhist nun, and caring for a child, she thought, would impede her spiritual journey. Her occasional and brief visits with young Daja became increasingly rare. As he grew up, there were often years without a single maternal visit. His father, unbeknownst to the boy, had suffered a mental breakdown and returned, helpless, to Los Angeles. The story of Daja's self-generated ouster from the monastery as an adolescent (he pretended to have slept with a prostitute), his eventual migration to his homeland, his lifelong attempt to understand and reconnect with his parents, and his eventual and dangerous work on behalf of Tibetan rights under Chinese oppression make for a compelling reading experience. But more than that, the story of Daja Meston reminds us of the universal human need for roots and family bonds. It is ultimately an unforgettable story of love, hope, and forgiveness and of a gentle man with an enormous capacity for all three.
