Book excerpt: Hailey and her boyfriend moved from the Midwestern United States to Hong Kong, China to be part of China's ever-expanding entertainment industry. When her boyfriend's job took him out of Hong Kong and into Mainland China, their relationship strained to persevere. A vacation on the tropical island of Bali rekindled their passion for travel and each other. Along the way they played with some exotic monkeys, visited ancient temples and got in a few laps at the pool. When people go to Bali, they usually spend their time lounging on the beaches and hopping from one restaurant and pub to the next. Hailey and her boyfriend spent most of their time with each other, exploring their relationship's limits and pushing their own personal boundaries farther than either of them ever expected. This is not your grandmother's travel guide.

Book excerpt: What happens when a shy young woman who was always taught to be ashamed of her body finds herself on a cruise ship with 2,000 nudists enjoying the sun and water and letting it all hang out? An excerpt: The people on that cruise have the ability to see nudity in a naturally innocent way – the way most children do before we're all told that nude is lewd. As a dancer, I can relate to that. I think we're all natural born dancers, but at some point in our childhood we're told to grow up and stop moving with natural joy. Most people forget how to dance and even professional dancers have to be trained all over again. We talked and laughed, swam and played games – all completely naked. None of them noticed all the flaws I see in my body and no one laughed at anybody for being imperfect. When everybody's naked, no one cares about perfection. People who don't know anything about nudism like to say that the people you see at a nude beach are the people you don't want to see naked. What they'll never get – and it took me a while to figure out – is that nudists don't get nude to show off their imperfect bodies. They are not exhibitionists and they don't like voyeurs. You are always welcome to join them, but they're not interested in being stared at. Something I figured out that the gymnophobes will never know is that the people you see nude are exactly the people you want to see naked. Instead of surgically enhanced bodies that conform to whatever this year's definition of perfection is, they have natural, human bodies. I was on a ship with 2,000 nudists. All of them were beautiful.

Book The Oxford Diaries of Arthur Hugh Clough

Download or read book The Oxford Diaries of Arthur Hugh Clough written by Arthur Hugh Clough and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Hugh Clough is one of the most undervalued Victorian poets. His importance is now being recognized, and the New Oxford Book of Victorian Verse assigns him his rightful position as a major poet. While an undergraduate at Balliol and a Fellow of Oriel, Clough wrote a series of intensely personal diaries, which throw light not only on his own development as a poet, but on the Oxford education of the time and the religious sensibility of the early Victorian era. Having been influenced by Thomas Arnold at Rugby, Clough felt the attraction at Oxford of the charisma of Newman. He was torn between the liberal and the catholic view of Christianity and began to raise the questions which led him eventually to agnosticism. In lighter moments the Diaries show Clough boating on the river and walking with Matthew Arnold through the countryside immortalized by The Scholar Gypsy.

Book Time in the Black Experience

Download or read book Time in the Black Experience written by Joseph K. Adjaye and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1994-05-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first book which deals entirely with the subject of time in Africa and the Black Diaspora, Adjaye presents ten critical case studies of selected communities in Africa, the Caribbean, and the American South. The essays cover a wide spectrum of manifestations of temporal experience, including cosmological and genealogical time, physical and ecological cycles, time and worldview, social rhythm, agricultural and industrial time, and historical processes and consciousness. The studies confirm the continuity of temporal experience among Africans from pre-colonial times, through the colonial period in Africa, across continents through slavery and Maroon societies, to present-day communities like the Gullah of the Sea Islands of South Carolina. The subject of time, now recognized to be relative rather than uniform, draws together evidence from a variety of disciplines, specifically history, linguistics, political science, anthropology, and philosophy.

Or expensive leather shoes...” Late one night, when her husband Paul is asleep, Meg Patterson escapes her violent marriage. Driving across the Nullarbor with her twelve-year-old son Josh, Meg hopes this is their chance at a new beginning. But will they ever be safe from Paul? Paul, a trader at the Perth Stock Exchange, is being investigated for insider trading. Meg’s not only taken his son; she’s also taken his car and something very valuable inside it. Something Paul needs to get back before everything comes crashing down. David Harper, newly unemployed and living far from his family, is devastated when his wife calls from Singapore to tell him that her contract has been extended and she and their son Sebastian will be away for another twelve months. But when Meg and Josh move in next door, and Sebastian visits for the school holidays, things start looking up for David. Then a stranger arrives in town asking about Meg and her son. David knows it’s Paul. Somehow he has to protect Meg and Josh – and then the unthinkable happens … The Song of Clouds is a story about the healing forces of nature, about letting go of the past and embracing new beginnings and, ultimately, the power of love.

It includes the contexts and places we inhabit and the spaces we create to reason and imagine. It includes our processes and activities for performing and creating new value. It includes our relationships and the tools and technologies we use and it enables us to connect and integrate our past and current experiences. While the first edition of the book was aimed primarily at educators working in higher education, this shortened version has in mind the people who support learning and development in organisations that are not primarily educational.

Book Beyond Memory

Download or read book Beyond Memory written by Max Mojapelo and published by African Minds. This book was released on 2008 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa possesses one of the richest popular music traditions in the world - from marabi to mbaqanga, from boeremusiek to bubblegum, from kwela to kwaito. Yet the risk that future generations of South Africans will not know their musical roots is very real. Of all the recordings made here since the 1930s, thousands have been lost for ever, for the powers-that-be never deemed them worthy of preservation. And if one peruses the books that exist on South African popular music, one still fi nds that their authors have on occasion jumped to conclusions that were not as foregone as they had assumed. Yet the fault lies not with them, rather in the fact that there has been precious little documentation in South Africa of who played what, or who recorded what, with whom, and when. This is true of all music-making in this country, though it is most striking in the musics of the black communities. Beyond Memory: Recording the History, Moments and Memories of South African Music is an invaluable publication because it offers a first-hand account of the South African music scene of the past decades from the pen of a man, Max Thamagana Mojapelo, who was situated in the very thick of things, thanks to his job as a deejay at the South African Broadcasting Corporation. This book - astonishing for the breadth of its coverage - is based on his diaries, on interviews he conducted and on numerous other sources, and we find in it not only the well-known names of recent South African music but a countless host of others whose contribution must be recorded if we and future generations are to gain an accurate picture of South African music history of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
