Book Hadron Production in Quark Antiquark and Gluon Jets from Electron Positron Interactions at the Z0 Pole

Download or read book Hadron Production in Quark Antiquark and Gluon Jets from Electron Positron Interactions at the Z0 Pole written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present production measurements of the charged hadrons [pi]{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} and p/{bar p} in ee− interactions at the Z° pole. The excellent particle identification capability of the SLC Large Detector (SLD) at the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) are used. In addition to studies over a wide momentum range in hadronic Z° events of all five flavors, we have made the most precise measurements in light (uds), c and b flavor events separately. Unambiguous flavor dependencies have been observed, and the results have been compared with the predictions of several QCD fragmentation models. We have also exploited the unique feature of electron beam polarization in our experiment to compare hadron production separately in quark and antiquark jets. Direct evidence that higher momentum hadrons are more likely to contain the primary quark and antiquark is seen, with precision sufficient to provide new model tests. Finally, we have studied hard gluon jets in detail. We have confirmed that gluon jets have a higher multiplicity of softer particles than light quark jets, and found this enhancement to be the same for [pi]{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} and p/{bar p} at the few percent level at all momenta. Any overall difference in the hadron fractions is limited to 0.018 at the 95% confidence level, indicating that there are no differences at the hadronization stage in jet formation between gluons and quarks.

Book Resonance Production in Quark and Gluon Jets

Download or read book Resonance Production in Quark and Gluon Jets written by Derek William Lane and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formation of hadrons from free quarks and gluons is poorly understood and can not be fully explained by current theories. This hadronization process is described using phenomenological models, each reflecting possible scenarios for the QCD dynamics. Electron-positron annihilation at the Z0 resonance provides an ideal environment in which to study hadron production because of the combination of high event rates and clean final states due to the absence of beam and target remnants. Using the particle identification capabilities of the DELPHI detector at the Large Electron-Positron collider (LEP), it is possible to differentiate the production of different hadron species in the final state. This information allows the study of details of the transition from quarks and qluons to stable hadrons. This thesis investigates the hadronization process by comparing the production of [Phi] and K*0 particles produced in quark jets versus those produced in gluon jets at the Z0.

Book Hadron Production in Light and Heavy Quark and Antiquark Jets

Download or read book Hadron Production in Light and Heavy Quark and Antiquark Jets written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors review four hadronization studies performed by the SLD experiment at SLAC, involving separation of light (Z° → u{anti u}, d{anti d}, s{anti s}), c, and b flavors using precision vertexing, and separation of q- and {anti q}-jets using the highly polarized SLC electron beam. They measured the differences between the average charged multiplicities in Z° → light, → c{anti c}, and →b{anti b} events, and found that the results were consistent with predictions of perturbative QCD. Next, they measured?/?/p/?°/?° production in light events for the first time, and compared with production in c- and b-flavor events. They then examined particle production differences in light quark and antiquark hemispheres, and observed more high momentum baryons and K−s̀ than antibaryons and Ks̀ in quark hemispheres, consistent with the leading particle hypothesis. Lastly, they performed a search for jet handedness in light q- and {anti q}-jets. Assuming Standard Model values of quark polarization in Z° decays, they have set an improved upper limit on the analyzing power of the handedness method.

Book excerpt: We present a number of jet fragmentation measurements ee− --> hadrons. The ALEPH collaboration measures inclusive rho°(770), f0(980) and f2(1270) production rates, improving the world averages. The SLD collaboration measures pi{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} and p/anti-p production in light-, c- and b-flavor Z° decays, as well as leading hadrons in light-quark jets, precisely. The DELPHI collaboration measures the average charged multiplicity in light- and b-flavor events at 183 and 189 GeV, verifying a precise prediction of QCD and excluding flavor-independent fragmentation.

Book The Quark Structure of Hadrons

Download or read book The Quark Structure of Hadrons written by Claude Amsler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel forms of matter, such as states made of gluons (glueballs), multiquark mesons or baryons and hybrid mesons are predicted by low energy QCD, for which several candidates have recently been identified. Searching for such exotic states of matter and studying their production and decay properties in detail has become a flourishing field at the experimental facilities now available or being built - e.g. BESIII in Beijing, BELLE II at SuperKEKB, GlueX at Jefferson Lab, PANDA at FAIR, J-PARC and in the upgraded LHC experiments, in particular LHCb. A modern primer in the field is required so as to both revive and update the teaching of a new generation of researchers in the field of QCD. These lectures on hadron spectroscopy are intended for Master and PhD students and have been originally developed for a course delivered at the Stefan Meyer Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. They are phenomenologically oriented and intended as complementary material for basic courses in particle and nuclear physics. The book describes the spectra of light and heavy mesons and baryons, and introduces the fundamental properties based on symmetries. Further, it derives multiplet structures, mixing angle, decay coupling constants, magnetic moments of baryons, and predictions for multiquark states and compares these with suitable experimental data. Basic methods of calculating decay angular distributions and determining masses and widths of resonances are also presented. The appendices provide students and newcomers to the field with the necessary background information, and include a set of problems and solutions.

Book Data driven Extraction of the Substructure of Quark and Gluon Jets in Proton proton and Heavy ion Collisions

Download or read book Data driven Extraction of the Substructure of Quark and Gluon Jets in Proton proton and Heavy ion Collisions written by Yueyang Ying and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modification of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the size of the modifications differs between theoretical models. Therefore a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. We demonstrate a fully data-driven method for separating quark and gluon contributions to jet observables using a statistical technique called topic modeling. We will also demonstrate that jet substructures, such as jet shapes and jet fragmentation function, could be extracted using this data-driven method. This proof-of-concept study is based on proton-proton and heavy-ion collision events from the PYQUEN generator with statistics accessible in Run 4 of the Large Hadron Collider. These results suggest the potential for an experimental determination of quark- and gluon-jet spectra and their substructures.
