Para ello, las instancias europeas suscitan una reforma general en los contenidos y, más particularmente, en la manera de impartir la docencia. Se pretende que los estudiantes sean mucho más activos en la búsqueda de información, en la reflexión que les lleva a asimilarla. Más horas de biblioteca, seminarios, discusiones en grupo y con el profesor figuran en la agenda de los que buscan que el estudiante se reconozca más responsable de lo que sabe y quiere saber. El interrogante inevitable que surge es: ¿está la universidad española preparada para estas innovaciones? El autor responde indirectamente a esta cuestión entrando a fondo en el tema de la cultura de la institución universitaria. También plantea cuestiones cruciales sobre el futuro de la universidad en cuanto instancia que, hasta ahora, conserva y transmite en exclusiva el conocimiento. Y ello por cuanto la misma noción de conocimiento (universitario) deberá superar la sospecha de “dilettantismo” o lentitud de respuesta a los imperativos de rendimiento económico que hoy día nos invaden. ¿Hasta dónde debe plegarse la universidad a las exigencias de la llamada “globalización”? La universidad del siglo XXI, quiéralo o no, va a tener que dar una respuesta.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade, interest in language teacher education and professionalization programs has increased significantly mainly due to global educational reforms, which have been driven by internationalization, multilingualism, the rise of new literacy and the incorporation of technologies. These reforms, based on the challenges of knowledge societies and networks, have created the need to re-evaluate and reconceptualize teacher training and teacher professional development as a "fundamental connection to teaching" (Bryant et al., 2008; Vélaz de Medrano & Vaillant, 2009; Espinosa, 2012; Johnson and Golombeck, 2018). The main objective is, then, to “prepare the new generations within an increasingly uncertain and demanding global scenario” (Pérez Ruíz, 2014, p 114). This publication addresses work on the education of language teachers in a variety of sociocultural, educational and institutional contexts carried out in Mexico and Latin America with various methodological designs and approaches from different theoretical perspectives. Therefore, in the context of current challenges, we seek to promote the exchange, discussions of experience and results of research and reflection that can influence the direction and implementation of language policies regarding teacher education and teacher professionalization for language teaching.
