Book A Framework to Support Landscape Analyses of Habitat Supply and Effects on Populations of Forest dwelling Species

Download or read book A Framework to Support Landscape Analyses of Habitat Supply and Effects on Populations of Forest dwelling Species written by Glenn Douglas Sutherland and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document outlines a spatial modelling framework relevant to managing forest-dwelling species. The northern spotted owl, an endangered Species at Risk, is used as the case study for framework development and application. The authors present results from development of the component models and from the testing of biological hypotheses and sensitivity analyses of biological assumptions about the northern spotted owl and its ecology. Further they demonstrate application of the framework for assessment of management options for the northern spotted owl and towards identifying critical habitat. This project was undertaken in collaboration with the Canadian Spotted Owl Recovery Team, and the document also outlines the collaborative approach used to address species recovery.--Publisher's website.

Book Assessment of Biodiversity for Improved Forest Planning

Download or read book Assessment of Biodiversity for Improved Forest Planning written by Peter Bachmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The `Global Biodiversity Strategy' signed in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, and the resolutions at the Ministerial Conferences on the Protection of Forests in Europe in Strasbourg, 1990, and Helsinki, 1993, commit the signatory states to monitor nationally the state of biodiversity and to sustain the characteristic natural variation in the country. Sustainability and long-term planning are the two terms best describing the philosophy of traditional forest management practices. However, the traditional planning techniques are not primarily developed to maintain sustainability of biodiversity. The gap between the international commitments and the practices in forest assessment and management is obvious. This publication presents experience in methodology for assessing and monitoring the variation of ecosystems and habitats in relation to biodiversity conservation and for integrating biodiversity in regional planning of forest management and land use. The state of the art in the field of natural resource assessments with special reference to forest biodiversity is reviewed, progress in integrating data on biodiversity in forest management planning is presented and the information needs regarding biodiversity conservation and the question to what degree assessment methods for forest biodiversity can be simplified for practical applications are discussed. The book is intended for researchers and practitioners in the field of forest and environmental planning and environmental policies.

Book Mountain Goat Habitat Supply Modeling in the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area North central British Columbia Version 1 0

Download or read book Mountain Goat Habitat Supply Modeling in the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area North central British Columbia Version 1 0 written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes work conducted to initiate development of a habitat supply model (HSM) for mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) that would be used to address management concerns for mountain goat populations potentially impacted by forest harvesting, particularly in those locations where goats use low-elevation mineral licks in areas with high timber supply value. The introduction reviews mountain goat ecology & management concerns in the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area of northern British Columbia and the objectives & applications of goat HSM in land use planning. Section 2 describes modelling activities and includes information on the modelling approach and the modelling tools used. The models developed are presented in section 3. These include four sub-models of management factors (covering ground disturbance, aerial disturbance, hunting, & predation) and four habitat models that focussed on habitat types considered most likely to be either limiting or important to mountain goat populations in the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area. Sections 4 & 5 present modelling results & their interpretation and information on procedures for model testing & validation. Appendices include an agenda & summary of HSM workshops conducted in February & March 2003 and results of trial application of the model to the Ospika River drainage.

Book Expert Knowledge and Its Application in Landscape Ecology

Download or read book Expert Knowledge and Its Application in Landscape Ecology written by Ajith H. Perera and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-21 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typically, landscape ecologists use empirical observations to conduct research and devise solutions for applied problems in conservation and management. In some instances, they rely on advice and input of experienced professionals in both developing and applying knowledge. Given the wealth of expert knowledge and the risks of its informal and implicit applications in landscape ecology, it is necessary to formally recognize and characterize expert knowledge and bring rigor to methods for its applications. In this context, the broad goal of this book is to introduce the concept of expert knowledge and examine its role in landscape ecological applications. We plan to do so in three steps: First we introduce the topic to landscape ecologists, explore salient characteristics of experts and expert knowledge, and describe methods used in capturing and formalizing that knowledge. Second, we present examples of research in landscape ecology from a variety of ecosystems and geographic locations that formally incorporate expert knowledge. These case studies address a range of topics that will interest landscape ecologists and other resource management and conservation professionals including the specific roles of expert knowledge in developing, testing, parameterizing, and applying models; estimating the uncertainty in expert knowledge; developing methods of formalizing and incorporating expert knowledge; and using expert knowledge as competing models and a source of alternate hypotheses. Third, we synthesize the state of knowledge on this topic and critically examine the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating expert knowledge in landscape ecological applications. The disciplinary subject areas we address are broad and cover much of the scope of contemporary landscape ecology, including broad-scale forest management and conservation, quantifying forest disturbances and succession, conservation of habitats for a range of avian and mammal species, vulnerability and conservation of marine ecosystems, and the spread and impacts of invasive plants. This text incorporates the collective experience and knowledge of over 35 researchers in landscape ecology representing a diverse range of disciplinary subject areas and geographic locations. Through this text, we will catalyze further thought and investigations on expert knowledge among the target readership of researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in landscape ecology.

Download or read book Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages written by Bharat Jayaraman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-05-19 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages (PADL) is a forum for researchers and practitioners to present original work emphasizing novel applications and implementation techniques for all forms of declarative concepts, especially those emerging from functional, logic, and c- straint languages. Declarative languages have been studied since the inception of computer science, and continue to be a vibrant subject of investigation today due to their applicability in current application domains such as bioinformatics, network con?guration, the Semantic Web, telecommunications software, etc. The 6th PADL Symposium was held in Dallas, Texas on June 18–19, 2004, and was co-located with the Compulog-Americas Summer School on Compu- tional Logic. From the submitted papers, the program committee selected 15 for presentation at the symposium based upon three written reviews for each paper, which were provided by the members of the program committee and additional referees. Two invited talks were presented at the conference. The ?rst was given by Paul Hudak (Yale University) on “An Algebraic Theory of Polymorphic T- poral Media. ” The second invited talk was given by Andrew Fall (Dowlland Technologies and Simon Fraser University) on “Supporting Decisions in C- plex, Uncertain Domains with Declarative Languages. ” Following the precedent set by the previous PADL symposium, the program committee this year again selected one paper to receive the ‘Most Practical - per’award.

Book Principles of Sustainable Development Volume II

Download or read book Principles of Sustainable Development Volume II written by Giancarlo Barbiroli and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Sustainable Development is the component of Encyclopedia of Development and Economic Sciences in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Sustainable Development is a term of differing definitions. Standing alone, the term is abstract and ambiguous. The meaning most often cited is that adopted by the World Commission on Environment and Development: meeting today’s true needs and opportunities without jeopardizing the integrity of the planetary life-support base – the environment – and diminishing its ability to provide for needs, opportunities, and quality of life in the future. This definition may serve as a general principle, but for a guide to action its components sustainability and development must be given substance: what is to be sustained and what developed? Is development essentially economic or material growth, and is sustainability mostly a means to keep economic growth growing? Consequently, should development represent means toward ecologically sustainable ends? The concept of ecological sustainability has been advanced as a restriction on economic development. It follows therefore that principles of sustainable development depend upon how the term is understood and how it is put into practice. Even so the definition of the World Commission on Environment and Development, given the adequate definition of variable needs, provides the most reliable principle for testing the qualitative and ecological sustainability of development proposals. The Theme on Principles of Sustainable Development, in three volumes, deals with the diversity of points of view on this complex subject. These three volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.
