Download or read book H C Fry and the Glass of Rochester Pennsylvania Volume 4 written by Edward T. Davis, 3rd and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the eventful final years of the H.C. Fry Glass Company from 1921-1933. Highlights of these years include the introduction of the opalescent line of of Pearl Ovenware, followed up by Fry's phenomenal Foval art line with Jade or Delft trim and the Radiowave line. Cut glass remained a feature, but ultimately gave way to the beautiful crystal and colored stemware and tableware of the later 1920s. Many rare pieces from all of these eras are illustrated throughout this volume. Even after the passing of H. C. Fry in 1929, the company continued to bring out new lines, many of which are avidly collected today, but sadly the advent of the Great Depression ultimately brought this proud old company to its final end. This book is the culmination of over forty years of research and consists entirely of primary sources, including trade journal reports, newspapers, original advertisements, and archival materials passed down in the Davis family, with illustrations drawn from those sources as well as from catalogs, private collections of Fry family photographs, postcards, Sanborn fire maps, and much more.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Hagley Prize in Business History from The Hagley Museum and Library and the Business History ConferenceSelected by Choice Magazine as an Outstanding Academic Title Originally published in 1999. Imagining Consumers tells for the first time the story of American consumer society from the perspective of mass-market manufacturers and retailers. It relates the trials and tribulations of china and glassware producers in their contest for the hearts of the working- and middle-class women who made up more than eighty percent of those buying mass-manufactured goods by the 1920s. Based on extensive research in untapped corporate archives, Imagining Consumers supplies a fresh appraisal of the history of American business, culture, and consumerism. Case studies illuminate decision making in key firms—including the Homer Laughlin China Company, the Kohler Company, and Corning Glass Works—and consider the design and development of ubiquitous lines such as Fiesta tableware and Pyrex Ovenware.

Book Vanessa Bell

Download or read book Vanessa Bell written by Frances Spalding and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive and authorised biography of the artist Vanessa Bell. Even through the lens of the twenty-first century, the story of Vanessa Bell's life is unorthodox. A powerful magnetic figure, Bell lived at the heart of the Bloomsbury Group and was often the core figure around which the disparate individuals of the movement revolved. Her art and designs – so often overshadowed by her sister Virginia Woolf's writings and fame and by the interest in her own unconventional life – made a significant contribution to the history of the Bloomsbury Group. Yet, until this authorised biography was written, she has remained a largely silent and enigmatic figure. In this captivating account, acclaimed art historian and biographer Frances Spalding restores Bell to the heart of the Bloomsbury Group, illuminating an exceptional life and the free-spirited circle among which she lived.
