Book Queensland s Threatened Animals

Download or read book Queensland s Threatened Animals written by Lee K Curtis and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queensland is home to 70% of Australia’s native mammals (226 species), over 70% of native birds (630 species), just over half of the nation’s native reptiles (485) and native frogs (127), and more than 11 000 native plant species. Hundreds of these have a threatened status in Queensland. In order for Queensland to maintain and recover a healthy biodiversity we must address the serious problems faced by our natural environment – habitat loss, inappropriate land management, change in fire regimes, pollution of natural resources, proliferation of invasive species and climate change. This book features up-to-date distribution data, photos and maps for most of Queensland’s threatened animals. It also includes a comprehensive list of resources, with key state, national and international organisations involved in the recovery and management of threatened species. Queensland's Threatened Animals will provide vital information to scientists, educators, business entities, government agencies, students, community groups, environmental NGOs, regional NRMs and potential volunteers.

Book Conservation of the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly in Australia

Download or read book Conservation of the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly in Australia written by Donald P.A. Sands and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey of one the longest insect conservation campaigns in Australia deals with recovery of one of the most iconic endemic butterflies, the Richmond birdwing, threatened by clearance and fragmentation of subtropical rainforest in eastern Australia and the spread of an alien larval food-plant. Its conservation has involved many aspects of community involvement, developed over more than 20 years, and focused on habitat restoration and weed eradication, in conjunction with conservation of remaining forest fragments. The work has involved the entire historical range of the butterfly, addressed threats and emphasised landscape connectivity, and has enhanced recovery through extensive plantings of native food plants. Interest has been maintained through extensive publicity, community education and media activity, and the programme has provided many lessons for advancing insect conservation practice in the region.

Book A Glimpse of Gympie History and Heritage

Download or read book A Glimpse of Gympie History and Heritage written by Graham and Katherine and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gympie is the quiet achiever of South East Queensland. From its chaotic beginning amid a gold rush, to overcoming the isolation caused by limited access to a port (Maryborough) and the state capital (Brisbane), and diversifying its industry base into timber, dairying and fruit growing, Gympie has become a busy hub within the Wide Bay-Burnett region for industry, tourism and local government administration. Gympie has achieved this progress without forgetting its past, by maintaining and refurbishing its building heritage, remembering the contribution of its citizens to the Australian war efforts through an impressive memorial lane of murals, honouring the contribution of its famous citizens, and maintaining museums to educate its citizens and tourists alike about the positive impacts of the gold, timber, dairying and fruit growing industries. Furthermore, the Gympie council has financed the reinvigoration of the Mary River Branch Railway and its "Rattler" tourism initiative. Gympie is a small city (population 21,000) 176km north of Brisbane in the Wide Bay-Burnett region of South East Queensland. It was established following the discovery of gold in 1867, a significant event in the life of a young and financially vulnerable State of Queensland. Although the gold rush is long gone, Gympie continues to flourish and today is a local government administrative centre for the Mary River Valley and Cooloola Coast (population 52,000).Our book provides a glimpse of Gympie's interesting history and heritage.
