Book excerpt: Western expansion in North America has mainly been described as either a linear sequence energized by nineteenth-century nation-building processes at a moving frontier, or as the practice of settler colonialism and its exploitation of resources and displacement of nonwhite peoples. This book suggests that shifting the focus from this binary pattern towards spatial imaginations and spatialization processes—a new theoretical framework developed at SFB 1199—provides novel insights into the placemaking dynamics of the American West. It brings to light a discursive diversity that often contradicts unidirectional interpretive patterns. It becomes clear that while some discourses solidified into spatial metanarratives like the character-shaping clash of civilizations at the frontier or manifest destiny, alternative spatial imaginations exist juxtaposed to or obfuscated by canonical interpretations. Making use of a variety of sources (including works of literature, poetry, newspapers, paintings, and speeches) to access spatialization processes on several sociocultural scales, the book presents a careful exploration of the parameters that inform(ed) the creation, affirmation, and subversion of spatial imagination of the American West throughout the nineteenth century from the perspective of American Studies.

My wife is, and has always been, the girl I met in high school. I have spent each third of my life in each of the three countries. My reasons for doing so include taking advantage of opportunities to give my family - my wife and children - a more enjoyable life. A decade ago, I published a book of essays: Ground Beef for the Mind, that's available on Amazon. Other than that, because of a love for writing, I have been attempting to write books for most of my adult life, but never completing most of them except for my first attempt which I did not get a publisher to take. One of the people that stimulated in me an interest in writing was Agatha Christie who will forever be intriguing to me. Interestingly, my first choice of a major when I first applied to continue my studies at U of Toronto was Nursing. The practical’s clashed with my full-time evening job and so I changed to Computer Science, which led my life into the world of Information Technology.

Book excerpt: On the fiftieth anniversary of his country's independence, the author looks in Janus - faced fashion, at the culture of his native Guyana from its early days of slavery and indenture to the present, and speculates on its development over the next half-century. His account records the trials and tribulations of the laborers who were imported by the British plantocracy to toil under cruel and oppressive conditions. Strict control was achieved by the British though the imposition of their culture on the captive population and a "divide and rule" policy which sowed the seeds of racial conflict between the various ethnic groups. The British Governors were replaced by elected representatives of local political parties, some of whom did not hesitate to adopt the British policy of division to ensure victory at the polls. As a result of these political machinations, cultural diversity and racial harmony were diminished by ethno-racial animosities and violence, especially between Afro- and Indo-Guyanese. Several proposals have been made in the past to resolve the situation, including power-sharing and more inclusive governance, but unfortunately, thus far, no significant progress has been made. The author reviews these recommendations, both old and new, to see if a change in the political culture can bring about the social cohesion and national unity which are critical to the nation's future.
