I have just returned from San Bernardino Community Hospital where I visited a patient, in my capacity as a Muslim chaplain. I am not sure who, if anyone, will ever read this book. It is a chronicle of our wonderful life, but there are many “Cinderella” stories. This is not a masterpiece of the English language, nor is it in any way unique. Writing gave me a great deal of pleasure. I knew I had angels beside me, and at all times, one seraph. We have had much joy, pleasure, excitement, much to wonder about, and much to puzzle over. We have laughed and cried, nearly just as much, sometimes out of pleasure and sometimes out of pain and grief; always, we have “walked with God.” We have made many mistakes—we are only human—and have alienated far too many, but never deliberately nor out of meanness. Those who love us will perhaps forgive, and those who do not may hopefully forget our transgressions, real or imagined, always remembering what Jesus said about “casting stones.” We tried to make a difference and, with the help of God, we did. In as much as this humble effort reflects the insuperable challenges of finding peace and harmony in a small family, I believe it resonates with the pain and suffering inflicted by man on his fellow man, in places like Syria, Central Africa, and the Ukraine, and with more natural disasters such as hurricanes, typhoons, and tornadoes, which create no less pain and suffering. As I approach the end of my life, I continue in the Ministry of Healing, in the hope that the solace and comfort I attempt to deliver will not be entirely unselfish. Dr. Frank A. Cambridge explores these interactions in Guyana during the three political eras that the society experienced as it moved from being a British colony to an independent nation. The first era to be considered is the period of mature colonial governance, guided by the dictates of “new imperialism,” which extended from 1900 to 1953. The second era, the period of internal self-government and the preparation for independence, extends from 1953, the year of the first general elections under universal adult suffrage, to 1966, the year when the colony gained its political independence. The third phase, 1966 to 2000, describes the early postcolonial era. Cambridge reveals how the issues of race, class, gender, and ideology deeply influenced who in Guyanese multicultural society obtained access to musical instruction and media outlets and thus who received recognition. He also describes the close connections between Guyanese musicians and Caribbean artists from throughout the region and traces the exodus of Guyanese musicians to the great cities of the world, a theme often neglected in Caribbean studies. Book excerpt: It is common knowledge that slavery and indenture were characterized by long hours of physical labor, restriction of movement and other basic human freedoms, and severe punishment for violations of draconian labor laws. Less well known is the fact that nutrition was very deficient and a range of infectious diseases maimed, debilitated and killed on a large scale. In trying to narrow the knowledge gap with respect to Guyana, Ramesh Gampat shows that extremely poor sanitary conditions, hygiene and nutrition hastened infections and created a vicious cycle. The British protected its own soldiers, officials and colonists by establishing a medical enclave that lasted until Emancipation in 1838. Former slaves were quarantined to neglected and decaying villages and Indians to plantations. Concern with health conditions appeared only during periods of epidemics and even then it was essentially for the protection of Europeans. Colonial medicine opened the way for stereotyping, labeling, racialization of disease, neutralization of potential leaders in the struggle for justice, and crystallization of the view that Europeans were superior to Blacks and Indians. Shorter stature and life expectancy are good indications that slaves and indentured immigrants fared considerably less well than Europeans. Several infectious diseases sickened and fell Blacks and Indians, including malaria and undefined fevers, pneumonia and bronchitis, diarrhea, and enteritis, tuberculosis, pneumonia and hookworm. The conquest of malaria in the early 1950s initiated the epidemiological transition from communicable to chronic diseases, and today NCDs account for some three-quarters of all deaths in Guyana. Malaria has reemerged, fueled by a gold boom that consumes huge amount of mercury. The potentially adverse public health consequences of the trio have been neglected.
