A dreamer whose songs and stories live even today. And a Viking was a free man - a man to whom honor and reputation were more important than life itself. Vikings is a complete guide to the Norse world, including maps, historical background, and details on society and religion. You can game any sort of Viking campaign, from fully realistic to magical and cinematic. Create a historical campaign, with sea battles, duels and bloody raids - or become a legendary berserker for mythic adventures with Thor and Odin!

Book excerpt: From the Thorsdrapa to the Marvel Thor and Avengers movies, Odin, the dark and mysterious lord of Valhalla, looms over all of the ancient tales of the Vikings. With his brothers, he formed the world from the body of a giant and then went on to seek greater wisdom by sacrificing himself on a tree and trading one of his eyes with a witch. With this vast wisdom, he sits upon his throne, peering into the nine worlds, seeking anything that might threaten his people. He rides over the battles of mortal men, deciding who shall live and die, and collecting worthy souls to come and feast in his hall until the war at the end of time. This book retells the greatest of Odin's stories, and then places those stories within their historical and mythological context. It follows the figure of Odin through the centuries, showing how different times and cultures reinterpreted him, and explores the reasons why he remains such a popular figure today.

Book The Vikings From Marauders to Slavers

Download or read book The Vikings From Marauders to Slavers written by Robert Wernick and published by New Word City. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vikings thought of themselves as the ultimate warriors. But this one-dimensional image belies considerable complexity. They were, in fact, as much merchants as marauders. Among the commodities they sold was one that brought them the greatest profit of all - more than amber, silver, or pelts. That commodity was human beings. Few people know that during their days of dominance, the Vikings were slavers to the world. Here, in this essay, is that little-told aspect of their story.

Book Stories of the Vikings Serapis Classics

Download or read book Stories of the Vikings Serapis Classics written by Mary MacGregor and published by Serapis Classics. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a summer day nearly twelve hundred years ago, three ships with bright red sails drew near to one of the little ports of the Dorset coast in the south of England. The townsfolk saw the ships, and paying no heed to the bright sails, said carelessly one to another, 'The merchantmen will be in port to-day.' And the harbour-master gathered together a few of his men and hastened to the quay. For he, too, had seen the ships, and, as in duty bound, he went to meet them, to demand from the captains the port taxes which were lawfully due to the king. But townsfolk and harbour-master alike had made a grievous mistake that summer day. For, as they soon discovered to their cost, and as the red sails might have forewarned them, the three ships were no peaceful merchantmen. No sooner had the vessels drawn up along the quay than a wild, strange-looking crew sprang to the shore, drew their swords, and speedily slew the harbour-master and his few unarmed followers. They then entered the town, plundering and burning the houses of all, both rich and poor. Leaving the little town in ruins, the strange crew, dragging their booty with them, marched down again to the quay. There they embarked, and without delay sailed away out to sea. Perhaps you have already guessed that the strange crew was a Viking band, that the three ships were Viking ships. So, indeed, they were, and this summer day in the year seven hundred and eighty-nine was the first time that the wild Northmen had been seen in England, or in any part of Europe where the 'White Christ' was worshipped...

Book Gurps Mass Combat

Download or read book Gurps Mass Combat written by David L. Pulver and published by Steve Jackson Games. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There Will Be War! Whether you're trying to stop the Dark Lord's invading army, lead a Ranger company against the Axis in WWII, or command your own crack mercenary regiment in a far-flung star empire, you're likely to get into battles that are far too big to resolve with ordinary GURPS combat. GURPS Mass Combat is the answer! It presents a powerful abstract system that lets you resolve land, sea, and air battles at any tech level. Features include: Rules for logistics, movement, reconnaissance, and many other things that matter to a military force even when no enemy is in sight. Integral treatment of air superiority, amphibious assaults, airborne troops, sieges, and everything else that's important when the enemy is in sight. Round-by-round resolution that puts the commander in control, letting him choose his strategies and instantly see the results of his skill and cunning. Equal attention to the aftermath of battle: pursuit, casualties, looting, recovering losses, and more. Everything is fast and easy to use in play, thanks to extensive examples, quick-reference tables, and ready-to-go stats for the strength, weaponry, and mobility of numerous unit types. It's all generic, too, covering realistic, fantastic, and superscience troops at every tech level, and providing guidelines for customizing their quality, special training, and equipment. And it never loses sight of the fact that GURPS is a roleplaying game - every hero gets a chance to shine, and the rules emphasize what the PCs do and what happens to them. GURPS Mass Combat requires only the GURPS Basic Set, Fourth Edition.
