While being the only disciple acknowledged by Gurdjieff in his own writings, referring to him as "my inner world essence friend", Orage, besides having an important contribution to Gurdjieff's teaching through his help with the first translation of Gurdjieff's books in English language and through his own writings and lectures, was a crucial self standing spiritual figure through his own work and ideas. This book contains explanations of Gurdjieff exercises.

Book excerpt: As we live in the age of electronic transmitted knowledge, we have compiled a short selection from Magisteria's Force of Gurdjieff volumes 1, 2 and 5 in order to present you with a taste of Gurdjieff's ideas presented by Alfred Orage at the groups in America. As far as we are concerned, these short texts are food for pondering, which represents that basic human activity leading to formal reasoning, as Orage used to say. They should be consumed and digested amidst our modern life for the special energy they release and this is why we have made them available as such. For the full texts of Orage transcriptions, please see the aforementioned volumes. You must also know that we have also prepared a complete, extended edition, on paper, for everyone who desires to have these three volumes under the same cover.

Book G I Gurdjieff A Life

Download or read book G I Gurdjieff A Life written by Paul Beekman Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised and corrected addendum to the biography G. I. Gurdjieff, A New Life, which was published in 2008It is appropriate to justify presenting another book to the corpus of works about him, and to wonder whether there are enough interested readers to warrant its publication. The response is an emphatic "yes," for the ideas of Gurdjieff and their sources are not passing mid nineteenth century fads or fancies. Not only was he recognized during his lifetime as an important messenger of vital ideas (Taylor, Gurdjieff in the Public Eye), but since his death his ideas have moved in ever widening cultural circles everywhere. There are over fifty Gurdjieff groups in the Western world alone, and groups in Africa, South America and Australia. I estimate there are over forty thousand active followers of Gurdjieff's ideas, as well as countless others who are exposed to his fourth way concepts and designs such as his enneagram. Interest in Gurdjieff and studies of him are bound to continue expanding.

Book Masters Speak

  • Author : Seymour B. Ginsburg
  • Publisher : Quest Books
  • Release : 2014-04-01
  • ISBN : 0835631117
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Masters Speak written by Seymour B. Ginsburg and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you want to pursue in a Western way the path that we follow here at Mirtola, you need to study and work with the Gurdjieffian teaching." Thus did the guru Madhava Ashish, at their first meeting, invite American businessman Sy Ginsburg on a spiritual journey that would last 19 years (until the guru's death) and include both annual visits to Sri Madhava Ashish's Mirtola ashram, near Almora, in India's Himalayan foothills, and a lengthy correspondence. Along the way, the entrepreneur/author would not only be caught up in the teachings of G. I. Gurdjieff, but also in the search for the elusive unitive vision — the world viewed from the perspective of the greater Self and not the personality. In this remarkable spiritual document, the reader shares the search, increasingly catching glimpses of the unitive vision as the book draws toward a close that is also an opening out, into the vaster dimensions of the human mind.

Book Classical Spirituality in Contemporary America

Download or read book Classical Spirituality in Contemporary America written by Michael S. Pittman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G.I. Gurdjieff (d. 1949) remains an important, if controversial, figure in early 20th-century Western Esoteric thought. Born in the culturally diverse region of the Caucasus, Gurdjieff traveled in Asia, Africa, and elsewhere in search of practical spiritual knowledge. Though oftentimes allusive, references to Sufi teachings and characters take a prominent position in Gurdjieff's work and writings. Since his death, a discourse on Gurdjieff and Sufism has developed through the contributions as well as critiques of his students and interlocutors. J.G. Bennett began an experimental 'Fourth Way' school in England in the 1970s which included the introduction of Sufi practices and teachings. In America this discourse has further expanded through the collaboration and engagement of contemporary Sufi teachers. This work does not simply demonstrate the influence of Gurdjieff and his ideas, but approaches the specific discourse on and about Gurdjieff and Sufism in the context of contemporary religious and spiritual teachings, particularly in the United States, and highlights some of the adaptive, boundary-crossing, and hybrid features that have led to the continuing influence of Sufism.

Book The Gurdjieff Movements

Download or read book The Gurdjieff Movements written by Wim van Dullemen and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of books exist about the life and teachings of the Russian spiritual visionary G.I. Gurdjieff (~1866-1949), yet few devote significant coverage to “the Gurdjieff Movements.” These several-hundred precise and mostly asymmetrical gestures, arranged into detailed choreographies for groups of practitioners, were designed by Gurdjieff himself. This new book reconsiders the eminent role of the Movements, revealing them as a vital yet often-neglected component in the transmission of Gurdjieff’s legacy. Van Dullemen, whose first Movements’ teacher received her instruction from Gurdjieff himself, is in a unique position to offer background, theory and first-hand experience about this subject. He is a professional musician and a long-time practitioner of the Gurdjieff work who trained in these Movements and served as a master accompanist for the practice for over thirty years. “No book can teach the Movements,” the author clearly asserts. And, he makes no such attempt here. Far from an instruction manual, The Gurdjieff Movements, A Communication of Ancient Wisdom, offers invaluable insight into and greater understanding of the whys and wherefores of this fourth arm of the vast teaching that comprises Gurdjieff’s complete communication: his books, his oral teachings, his music and finally his Movements. Along with fascinating stories of his own journey of discovery, van Dullemen has skillfully integrated: – autobiographical descriptions of the master Gurdjieff – interviews with direct pupils of Gurdjieff – diligent research within a wide range of firsthand sources – descriptions of the scientific, cultural and social climate during Gurdjieff’s time, and – the relationship between these and his teaching. The book is also a rare accomplishment. While highly authoritative, it is nonetheless written in a direct style with clear language, making it accessible to the public at large who may have interest, but little background, in this esoteric science and practice.

Book The Shadows of Heaven

Download or read book The Shadows of Heaven written by Paul Beekman Taylor and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 1998-05-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal of mystery surrounds G.I. Gurdjieff and "The Work." Today, many on the path of selfexploration find themselves drawn to the symbolism of the enneagram, and to Gurdjieff's other teachings. Gurdjieff was undeniably charismatic many famous and influential people lived in his "shadow," accepting his guidance while changing and transforming their lives. Shadows of Heaven focuses on the relationship between Gurdjieff and the poetnovelist Nathan Jean Toomer, from 1924 until Gurdjieff's death in 1949, as well as each man's relationship with Edith Annesley Taylor and her son Paul, the author of this book. Caught in the middle of this tense triad of interests was the English criticpublisher A.R. Orage, who was close to all three parties, and whose wife, Jessie, was Edith's best friend. Paul Taylor's unique life experience has made it possible for him to combine his mother's memoir's conversations between Toomer and Gurdjieff, and entries from Jessie Orage's diary into this fascinating book. It is probably the first to reveal something of Gurdjieff's "love life" with the mothers of his children. Several new descriptions of Gurdjieff's voyages with his pupils reveal aspects of Gurdjieff's character not documented elsewhere. Excerpts from Jessie Orage's diaries testify to the magnetic attraction Gurdjieff exercised over those he felt were viral to the dissemination of his ideas. With 16 pages of neverbefore published photographs, this book presents a fresh new picture of Gurdjieff and his teaching, adding to his legend a tangible humanity to which we can all relate.

Book Becoming Conscious with G I Gurdjieff

Download or read book Becoming Conscious with G I Gurdjieff written by Solange Claustres and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-20 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming Conscious with G.I.Gurdjieff Solange Claustres In principle all known Traditions are based on 'belief'. Gurdjieff's teaching is not a matter of belief, but of having a discerning spirit with which to practise and experience what is taught in order to understand, and to become conscious and responsible for oneself. It is a teaching which includes "work" on the three main parts of the human being, enabling a furtherment and deepening develop- ment of the whole. This teaching has always existed. It surfaces in one form or another, according to the demands and needs of time, place and changing civilisations, whenever humanity is out of balance and loses its reason and lucidity. This teaching is neither a religion nor a philosophy. It can help us to further our understanding of our own Tradition. The essential is that it is practised in our current daily life, just as it is, without changing it. The aim of this teaching is to become conscious: it is transmitted orally and practically, from teacher to pupil, and also from elder to younger members within a group. Solanges Claustres was close to Gurdjieff from 1941 until his death in 1949. She has more than 60 years experience of being involved in this teaching. She led movements classes from the very beginning, and she took part in numerous movements films. She has led her own work groups on Gurdjieff's teaching in France. She has directed movements classes, and taken part in the guidance of work groups in England, Holland and the U.S.A.

Book excerpt: This is one of the few records published by Gurdjieff in which he offers guidance to his 'community of seekers', the pupils from many countries who joined him in Paris and New York. The first section is mainly autobiographical, relating material crucial to an understanding of the nature and intensity of personal effort required for an all-inclusive work on oneself. This is followed by a series of talks which Gurdjieff gave to his pupils in New York in 1930, and then by a long, but incomplete, essay on 'The Outer and Inner World of Man'.
