Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coins have existed for over 2,000 years in India, but none have matched the sheer beauty and complexity of the coins issued by the kings of the Gupta dynasty from the fourth through the sixth centuries AD. Starting from the first of the Gupta kings, Chandragupta I in AD 319, to the last king Vishnugupta in AD 543, their coins are a historical record detailing the evolution of the Gupta style and its impact on religious art from India's Golden Age. The clues hidden in the coin designs, Brahmi legends, dates, and metrology have been deciphered here to help reconstruct the history of the Gupta dynasty. This work greatly expands upon A. S. Altekar's 1957 effort to fully document the coinage and to understand its impact on the history of India. It includes the rarest of the coins from the collections of major international museums as well as private collections, otherwise inaccessible to most researchers, and provides full-color, high-definition images of type specimens for each variety of coin issued by the Gupta kings. Fully revised and expanded for this 2nd edition, Treasures of the Gupta Empirewill help researchers, collectors, and history buffs fully understand the Gupta dynasty's complex history and beautiful coinage, and will serve as the most comprehensive numismatic and historical reference of the Gupta dynasty for years to come.

Book excerpt: Art historical studies have hitherto been mostly confined to sculptures, paintings, furniture and jewellery. Boldly moving away from the conventional approach to the study of coins as mere economic entities, the present volume is the first systematic, comprehensive and analytical study of ancient Indian coins as objects of art. Coins, like historical monuments, sculptures and paintings, have a symbolic meaning behind the visual form and epitomise the socio-religious conditions and the art traditions in which they emerged. Focusing on the coins of south India, the study, combining empirical data with theoretical insights, explores the subtle interrelationships between the steady evolution of coinage and the simultaneous development of art in this region. Tracing thematic, iconographic and stylistic affinities between the art in coins and the art in stone, the study clearly reveals that as sculptural art was more pervasive than numismatic art, the latter recurrently felt the impact of the former. Often, the mint masters and coin makers, faithfully reproduced, on a miniature scale, specimens of sculpture and architecture on the coins. At the same time, coins too were rarely featured in other mediums of art. Probing the metallic composition and the process of production of the coins of different dynasties and periods, the present study also analyses the technical constraints of numismatic art. The volume includes an exhaustive corpus, prepared for the first time ever, of the symbols and devices on the coins of the major dynasties of ancient south India. The book will be of interest to archaeologists, numismatists, art historians and economic historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of a coin is to facilitate economic transactions. At times, skilled artists were engaged to prepare dies and casts for manufactur¬ing coins, and some of their creations can be classed as ob..icts d'art. The present monograph is an attempt to study the art motifs on the coins of India from the earliest times to c 650 AD. An Introduction in the beginning presents the features of art in ancient Indian coinage. The device of the royal hunt, so popular on Imperial Gupta coins, has been taken up in an Appendix to the Introduction. Some beautifully struck coins, which may be termed as masterpieces of ancient Indian numismatic art, have been illustrated, described and commented upon.

Book excerpt: The present work describes the material and moral progress which India had achieved during the paramount sovereignty of the Gupta emperors in the fourth and fifth centuries a.d. It traces the origin and rise of the ruling family to Srigupta (240-280 a.d.) and concludes with the reign of Kumaragupta III (543 a.d.). It discusses the spirit of the age and the various trends in the sphere of Religion, Economy, Society, Education, Administration, Art and Architecture. It seeks to bring together all the facts and data derivable from different sources--literary, epigraphic and numismatic, the accounts of foreign visitors, particularly of the Chinese pilgrim Fa-hien who has left a detached and valuable record of India`s civilization during the reign of Chandragupta II. Herein we get an accurate picture of India`s golden age, the growth of her various institutions, her activities of expansion, colonization and her intercourse with Indonesia, China and other countries. The work is divided into sixteen chapters. It has an index of proper names and an addenda on the hoard of new Imperial Gupta coins discovered at Bayana in Bharatpur. The work is very interesting and instructive and is designed to meet the requirements of the academic student of history and the general reader alike.
