Book Guidelines on the use of available remote sensing tools products methodologies and data to improve agricultural crop production forecast statistics in sub saharan African countries

Download or read book Guidelines on the use of available remote sensing tools products methodologies and data to improve agricultural crop production forecast statistics in sub saharan African countries written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through in-depth understanding of agricultural production systems in Kenya, Senegal and Zimbabwe, this document is intended to provide guidelines on how to make use of the existing remote sensing products, methodologies and data to improve crop production forecast statistics in developing countries in general, and SSA, in particular. Despite the importance of crop production and the associated challenges most countries in SSA lack reliable and timely agricultural production forecasting systems to support decision-making at national to house-hold levels. Thus, these guidelines have been developed to facilitate the use of freely available remote sensing data and derived agro-climatic monitoring indicators and early warning products to improve crop production forecast in SSA, based on our recent experiences in Kenya, Senegal and Zimbabwe. The recent experiences accrued from working closely with the local national agricultural and meteorological centres have helped in identifying pragmatic approaches to support effective and efficiently modalities in crop production assessments and forecasting with adequate lead-time to support decision/policy making at sub-national, national and regional levels.

Book Review of the available remote sensing tools products methodologies and data to improve crop production forecasts

Download or read book Review of the available remote sensing tools products methodologies and data to improve crop production forecasts written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timely and reliable agricultural production forecasts are critical to make informed food policy decisions and enable rapid responses to emerging food shortfalls. Sub-Saharan Africa is subject to highly variable yield, production and consumption, occasioned by high climate variability, rapidly increasing populations, and limited financial capacity. This review examines the current status of the remote sensing (RS) tools, products, methodologies and data that can help to improve agricultural crop production forecasting systems.

Book Remote Sensing Applications for Agriculture and Crop Modelling

Download or read book Remote Sensing Applications for Agriculture and Crop Modelling written by Piero Toscano and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop models and remote sensing techniques have been combined and applied in agriculture and crop estimation on local and regional scales, or worldwide, based on the simultaneous development of crop models and remote sensing. The literature shows that many new remote sensing sensors and valuable methods have been developed for the retrieval of canopy state variables and soil properties from remote sensing data for assimilating the retrieved variables into crop models. At the same time, remote sensing has been used in a staggering number of applications for agriculture. This book sets the context for remote sensing and modelling for agricultural systems as a mean to minimize the environmental impact, while increasing production and productivity. The eighteen papers published in this Special Issue, although not representative of all the work carried out in the field of Remote Sensing for agriculture and crop modeling, provide insight into the diversity and the complexity of developments of RS applications in agriculture. Five thematic focuses have emerged from the published papers: yield estimation, land cover mapping, soil nutrient balance, time-specific management zone delineation and the use of UAV as agricultural aerial sprayers. All contributions exploited the use of remote sensing data from different platforms (UAV, Sentinel, Landsat, QuickBird, CBERS, MODIS, WorldView), their assimilation into crop models (DSSAT, AQUACROP, EPIC, DELPHI) or on the synergy of Remote Sensing and modeling, applied to cardamom, wheat, tomato, sorghum, rice, sugarcane and olive. The intended audience is researchers and postgraduate students, as well as those outside academia in policy and practice.

Book Remote sensing data for monitoring agricultural production and economic activity Application in Egypt

Download or read book Remote sensing data for monitoring agricultural production and economic activity Application in Egypt written by Abay, Kibrom A. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2022-03-14 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This policy note showcases two examples on how remote sensing data can be used for monitoring agricultural production and economic activities. The first case aims to generate granular data on agricultural production, which remain scarce in Egypt and the MENA region. The second case demonstrates the potential of remote sensing data to monitor economic activities during the COVID19 pandemic. Based on these data and together with other recent findings, we provide the following recommendations to facilitate post-COVID-19 recovery in Egypt: ► Targeting of stimulus and recovery packages based on the economic repercussions experienced across geographies and sectors ► Identifying and supporting promising value chains which experienced a significant slowdown in economic activities ► Diversifying economic activities and markets to improve the resilience of agri-food systems. ► Investment in data infrastructure to monitor and respond to future shocks. This may be supported by scale up of digital solutions, which proved to be effective in sustaining business activities even during the pandemic.

Book Methodologies Used in Remote Sensing Data Analysis and Remote Sensors for Precision Agriculture

Download or read book Methodologies Used in Remote Sensing Data Analysis and Remote Sensors for Precision Agriculture written by Jiyul Chang and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2023-02-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When adopting remote sensing techniques in precision agriculture, there are two main areas to consider: data acquisition and data analysis methodologies. Imagery and remote sensor data collected using different platforms provide a variety of information volumes and formats. For example, recent research in precision agriculture has used multispectral images from different platforms, such as satellites, airborne, and, most recently, drones. These images have been used for various analyses, from the detection of pests and diseases, growth, and water status of crops to yield estimations. However, accurately detecting specific biotic or abiotic stresses requires a narrow range of spectral information to be analyzed for each application. In data analysis, the volume and complexity of data formats obtained using the latest technologies in remote sensing (e.g., a cube of data for hyperspectral imagery) demands complex data processing systems and data analysis using multiple inputs to estimate specific categorical or numerical targets. New and emerging methodologies within artificial intelligence, such as machine learning and deep learning, have enabled us to deal with these increasing data volumes and the analysis complexity.
