Book excerpt: State arts agencies -- key players within the U.S. system of public support for the arts -- face growing economic, political, and demographic challenges to the roles and missions they adopted when founded in the mid-1960s. This report, the fourth and final in a multiyear study, looks at state arts agencies' efforts to rethink their roles and missions, reflecting on what the changes may mean for the direction of state arts policy. Drawing on readings, discussions, and analyses conducted for the study, the author concludes that if current trends and strategies continue, future state arts policy is likely to focus more on developing the creative economy, improving arts education, and encouraging a broader spectrum of state residents to participate in the arts. To achieve these goals, state arts agencies will likely become more involved in policy advocacy, coalition building, convening, and gathering and disseminating information than in grantmaking. The transition to this future poses some risks for the agencies and for the arts community, but it also offers the opportunity to more effectively promote the conditions in which the arts can thrive.

Book State Arts Agency Fact Sheet

Download or read book State Arts Agency Fact Sheet written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This national overview of state arts agency grants and services for arts education includes summary statistics and geographic distribution. The fact sheet uses data from Final Descriptive Reports of state arts agency grant-making activities submitted annually to the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Data within this report describes activities taking place during fiscal year 2013 or the most recent Final Descriptive Report available for each state. Grants and activities are coded for arts education when 50% or more of project activities are directed to arts education. State arts agencies invest more than $56 million in arts education. More than a third of all state arts agency grants (more than 8,000 grants) have a significant arts education component. These grants support a wide range of activities, including performances, exhibitions, residencies (both school and nonschool), instruction and curriculum development. Other types of grants support the design of assessment and evaluation tools and fund professional development programs. About 15% of arts education grants awarded are in the form of operating support--flexible dollars that can be used to support operations in accordance with an organization's specific needs. Supporting lifelong learning in the arts is a top priority for state arts agencies. State arts agencies also support after-school/out-of-school arts programs, early childhood arts learning, the arts in higher education and many programs that teach the arts to adults and seniors. By supporting arts education in the schools, state arts agencies foster young imaginations, address core academic standards, and promote the critical thinking and creativity skills essential to a 21st-century work force. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our intention is for the Arts and Education Handbook to stimulate those who value the arts and those who value a good education to work together at the local, state, and national levels towards their common goals. The exploring and identifying of common interests that is beginning to take place at the national level must take place systematically at the state and local levels. The advocates of the arts and of arts education at each governmental level must do a better job than in the past of demonstrating the value of the arts to the rest of the education community and to the general public. - Foreword.
