Book A Federal Approach to Contaminated Sites

Download or read book A Federal Approach to Contaminated Sites written by Canada. Contaminated Sites Management Working Group and published by Le Groupe de travail. This book was released on 1999 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document has been developed to provide a common federal approach to managing contaminated sites under federal custody. The intended audience for this approach is managers & operational personnel who are responsible for managing contaminated sites on federal lands. The approach incorporates risk-based environmental management which assesses risks to human health & the natural environment under current & intended-use scenarios and implements risk management solutions considered to be protective of those risks. Objectives, methodologies, and intended outputs are described for ten steps of the approach, from identification of suspect sites through detailed testing to final reporting & long-term monitoring. Appendices include a list of guidance documents and generic statements of work for various steps of the approach.

Book Ecological Risk Assessment

Download or read book Ecological Risk Assessment written by Glenn W. Suter II and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-10-23 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, environmental scientists have been required to perform a new type of assessment-ecological risk assessment. This is the first book that explains how to perform ecological risk assessments and gives assessors access to the full range of useful data, models, and conceptual approaches they need to perform an accurate assessment. It explains how ecological risk assessment relates to more familiar types of assessments. It also shows how to organize and conduct an ecological risk assessment, including defining the source, selecting endpoints, describing the relevant features of the receiving environment, estimating exposure, estimating effects, characterizing the risks, and interacting with the risk manager. Specific technical topics include finding and selecting toxicity data; statistical and mathematical models of effects on organisms, populations, and ecosystems; estimation of chemical fate parameters; modeling of chemical transport and fate; estimation of chemical uptake by organisms; and estimation, propagation, and presentation of uncertainty. Ecological Risk Assessment also covers conventional risk assessments, risk assessments for existing contamination, large scale problems, exotic organisms, and risk assessments based on environmental monitoring. Environmental assessors at regulatory agencies, consulting firms, industry, and government labs need this book for its approaches and methods for ecological risk assessment. Professors in ecology and other environmental sciences will find the book's practical preparation useful for classroom instruction. Environmental toxicologists and chemists will appreciate the discussion of the utility for risk assessment of particular toxicity tests and chemical determinations.

Book Environmental Analysis of Contaminated Sites

Download or read book Environmental Analysis of Contaminated Sites written by Geoffrey I. Sunahara and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-03-12 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioremediation is a process applied to restore contaminated sites using biological tools. The success or failure of this process usually depends on an understanding of the biotechnological process as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the ecotoxicological tools used for its evaluation. This useful book offers a unique treatment of the subject, linking soil ecotoxicity tests, bioremediation and environmental risk assessment. It also, describes the inter-relationships between the laboratory and field ecotoxicologist, the biotechnology consultant and different international environmental regulatory agencies and explains how they seek to achieve a successful evaluation of contaminated site restoration.

Book Risk Methodologies for Technological Legacies

Download or read book Risk Methodologies for Technological Legacies written by Dennis Bley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cold War Era left the major participants, the United States and the former Soviet Union (FSU), with large legacies in terms of both contamination and potential accidents. Facility contamination and environmental degradation, as well as the accident vulnerable facilities and equipment, are a result of weapons development, testing, and production. Although the countries face similar issues from similar activities, important differences in waste management practices make the potential environmental and health risks of more immediate concern in the FSU and Eastern Europe. In the West, most nuclear and chemical waste is stored in known contained locations, while in the East, much of the equivalent material is unconfined, contaminating the environment. In the past decade, the U.S. started to address and remediate these Cold War legacies. Costs have been very high, and the projected cost estimates for total cleanup are still increasing. Currently in Russia, the resources for starting such major activities continue to be unavailable.
