Book The GROCER WHO SOLD McCARTHYISM The Rise and Fall of Anti Communist Crusader Laurence A Johnson

Download or read book The GROCER WHO SOLD McCARTHYISM The Rise and Fall of Anti Communist Crusader Laurence A Johnson written by Fred M. Fiske and published by Chestnut Heights Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laurence A. Johnson, a supermarket chain owner in Syracuse, New York, wasn't just passionate about fresh produce; he was equally fervent about purging communism from America’s airwaves in the early 1950s. Teamed with like-minded anti-communists inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy, Johnson targeted food giants like Borden and Kraft. His weapon? Fear. He threatened to hurt sales of their products if they sponsored TV and radio shows employing anyone blacklisted for alleged communist ties. Manufacturers gave in, effectively giving Johnson veto power over the hiring and firing of actors, directors, and writers. As a result, the careers of stars such as Jack Gilford, Judy Holliday, Uta Hagen, Kim Hunter, Jose Ferrer, and Joseph Cotten suffered. Fred M. Fiske's "The Grocer Who Sold McCarthyism" exposes this little-known chapter of American history, including a libel suit by CBS radio host John Henry Faulk in 1956 that aimed to end the blacklist, and to punish Johnson and others for their reckless attacks. Fiske's powerful biography explores Johnson's ascent from small-time grocery operator to kingmaker wielding Red Scare hysteria as a cudgel to shape the landscape of American entertainment and commerce. Through Johnson's journey, we gain insight into a pivotal moment in U.S. history when the nation grappled with fear, ideology, and the delicate balance between security and freedom.

Book Black Freedom White Resistance and Red Menace

Download or read book Black Freedom White Resistance and Red Menace written by Yasuhiro Katagiri and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Black Freedom, White Resistance, and Red Menace, Yasuhiro Katagiri offers the first scholarly work to illuminate an important but largely unstudied aspect of U.S. civil rights history -- the collaborative and mutually beneficial relationship between professional anti-Communists in the North and segregationist politicians in the South. In 1954, the Supreme Court outlawed racial segregation in public schools with the Brown v. Board of Education ruling. Soon after -- while the political demise of U.S. senator Joseph R. McCarthy unfolded -- northern anti-Communists looked to the South as a promising new territory in which they could expand their support base and continue their cause. Southern segregationists embraced the assistance, and the methods, of these Yankee collaborators, and utilized the "northern messiahs" in executing a massive resistance to the Supreme Court's desegregation decrees and the civil rights movement in general. Southern white leadership framed black southerners' crusades for social justice and human dignity as a foreign scheme directed by nefarious outside agitators, "race-mixers," and, worse, outright subversives and card-carrying Communists. Based on years of extensive archival research, Black Freedom, White Resistance, and Red Menace explains how a southern version of McCarthyism became part of the opposition to the civil rights movement in the South, an analysis that leads us to a deeper understanding and appreciation for what the freedom movement -- and those who struggled for equality -- fought to overcome.

Book excerpt: In this startling, intensively researched book, bestselling historian Paul Kengor shines light on a deeply troubling aspect of American history: the prominent role of the "dupe." From the Bolshevik Revolution through the Cold War and right up to the present, many progressives have unwittingly aided some of America's most dangerous opponents. Based on never-before-published FBI files, Soviet archives, and other primary sources, Dupes exposes the legions of liberals who have furthered the objectives of America's adversaries. Kengor shows not only how such dupes contributed to history's most destructive ideology—Communism, which claimed at least 100 million lives—but also why they are so relevant to today's politics.

  • Pages : 766 pages

Download or read book James Baldwin written by William J. Maxwell and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available in book form for the first time, the FBI's secret dossier on the legendary and controversial writer. Decades before Black Lives Matter returned James Baldwin to prominence, J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI considered the Harlem-born author the most powerful broker between black art and black power. Baldwin’s 1,884-page FBI file, covering the period from 1958 to 1974, was the largest compiled on any African American artist of the Civil Rights era. This collection of once-secret documents, never before published in book form, captures the FBI’s anxious tracking of Baldwin’s writings, phone conversations, and sexual habits—and Baldwin’s defiant efforts to spy back at Hoover and his G-men. James Baldwin: The FBI File reproduces over one hundred original FBI records, selected by the noted literary historian whose award-winning book, F.B. Eyes: How J. Edgar Hoover’s Ghostreaders Framed African American Literature, brought renewed attention to bureau surveillance. William J. Maxwell also provides an introduction exploring Baldwin's enduring relevance in the time of Black Lives Matter along with running commentaries that orient the reader and offer historical context, making this book a revealing look at a crucial slice of the American past—and present.
