Download or read book Translocal China written by Tim Oakes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inter-disciplinary in approach, this collection of essays explores China’s reform era development within the concept of translocality. A key element of spatial change in today’s China has been the unprecedented geographic mobility of millions of labour migrants, tourists, brides, entrepreneurs, and many others. But translocality doesn’t just mean people. It is crucially constituted by the circulation of capital, ideas, images, goods, styles, services, and disease to name but a few. With contributions from well-respected China specialists, the essays focus simultaneously on mobilities and localities, drawing our attention to the multiplying forms of mobility in China whilst retaining the importance of localities in people’s lives. The book provides a clear path to understanding the importance of translocality as a concept along with concrete examples of its operation in China. Unique in approach, it is at once a study of the connections between location and culture, politics, economics, bodies, gender and technology.

Download or read book The Political Economy of the Chinese Coal Industry written by Tim Wright and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal mining is one of China’s largest industries, and provides an excellent case study through which to consider the broader issues of China’s transition from socialism to capitalism, focussing on the shift to a market economy, the rise of rural industry and the situation of China’s working class. Coal was one of the pillars of the planned economy but, the author argues, its shift to market-based operations has been protracted and difficult, particularly in moving from the artificially low prices of the planned economy to market prescribed prices - a change that had a major impact on the industry’s financial performance. The book goes on to considers the growth of small rural coal mines as part of the Township and Village Enterprises (TVEs) programme; these small mines have brought prosperity to areas where small manufacturing enterprises are not competitive, but at the same time have been the cause of many social and environmental problems. It also examines the situation of coal miners - arguably one the most vulnerable segments of the Chinese working class - under socialism and under capitalism, paying particular attention to the issue of work safety and coal mine disasters. The book provides a comprehensive and coherent treatment of these issues from the establishment of the People’s Republic up to 2010.

Download or read book Remaking the Chinese State written by Chao Chien-min and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than twenty years of economic and political reform, China is a vastly different country to that left by Mao. Almost all the characteristic policies and practices of the Maoist era have been abandoned, with the goals of revolution in foreign and domestic policy being replaced by an emphasis on economic modernization, accompanied by radical social transformation and an increasingly significant international role. Yet, despite these dramatic changes other fundamental features of China's policy remain unchanged. This book explores the strategies of reform in China and their implications for its domestic and foreign policies. It challenges the misconceptions that no political reforms are taking place and that China is eagerly embracing capitalism. It also challenges the view that China does not abide by international norms and practices on military and security matters. Its contributors, all highly respected scholars, avoid simple generalisations about the nature of China's politics or future path, instead offering comparisons and contrasts between policy areas and regions to create a more complete picture of this complex country.
