Book Guide to Rural Data

Download or read book Guide to Rural Data written by Priscilla Salant and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to acquaint researchers, primarily in local organizations, with data they can use to describe and better understand rural communities. Chapter 1 describes a few basic data concepts for readers who are not experienced data users. Chapter 2 provides an overview of major data sources that can be used to describe rural communities, including the Census Bureau's decennial and current population programs; the Census Bureau's agricultural, economic, and government censuses; personal income data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis; and labor market data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The chapter also explains where researchers can find data issued by these agencies, and where they can find more information by state or region. Chapters 3-5 show how researchers can use federal, state, and local data to understand social and economic change in very diverse rural communities. Data sources cover general population, education, labor force, income, housing, health, industry-specific data, and local government. Sample counties from the Economic Research Service County Typology groups are used to put the data sources in context. Appendices provide postal and electronic addresses and phone numbers for state and federal offices that house or collect data, and give details about Census Bureau publications and economic census programs. Contains 49 references, 36 data tables and figures, a glossary, and an index. (SV)

Book Rural KIDS COUNT Pocket Guide Measures of Child Well Being in the Nation s Rural Areas

Download or read book Rural KIDS COUNT Pocket Guide Measures of Child Well Being in the Nation s Rural Areas written by Annie E. Casey Foundation, Baltimore, MD. and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "Pocket Guide" is derived from the "2004 KIDS COUNT Special Report: City & Rural KIDSCOUNT Data Book." It is designed to give state-level policymakers a better understanding of conditions faced by families in their rural communities and how they compare to those in the rural parts of other states, as well as the country as a whole. This special guide provides the kind of detailed, objective data needed to track and monitor the well-being of children in the rural areas of every state. The measures presented here provide information on the following: Poverty; Family structure; Parental employment; Housing affordability; and Education. The data show that too many children growing up in isolated rural communities, in every region of the country, do not have the supports they need to become successful workers, responsible parent, and engaged citizens. Addressing--and resolving--issues facing disadvantaged children and families requires a combination of know-how, political will, and tangible resources. [This "KIDS COUNT Pocket Guide" was produced for the Annie E. Casey Foundation by the Population Reference Bureau (PRB).].

Book Life in Rural America

Download or read book Life in Rural America written by Robert L. Scardamalia and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s urban population has been growing while rural areas are declining – especially after the great recession. This is not new, as rural decline has been affected by the long-term shift from an agriculturally based economy to a service based economy. However, the preference of many millennials for urban settings exacerbates the issue and reduces the rural community’s ability to replenish the population. Life in Rural America: A Statistical Portrait presents economic and demographic indicators of the rural population and help users understand the community and geographic differences that rural communities experience. The book will be used as a reference source for data users looking to understand community and geographic differences in the rural component of the nation’s population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commonwealth Secretariat has found that there is a need throughout the developing world for a book describing the setting up and operation of rural learning resource centres. On behalf of the Secretariat, and using her own practical experience, Shirley Giggey has drawn up this comprehensive training guide. She first provides a complete description of the best method for setting up a rural resource centre, right from the initial idea and planning (taking local circumstances into account), through to financial and staffing arrangements. She covers suitable designs for the buildings to be used and their interior layout, with much detailed advice. The practical, day-to-day running of the centre is dealt with clearly, simply and thoroughly. The need for methodical arrangements in acquiring and storing materials, and how (and even whether!) to lend them out are covered at length. Duplicating and other services are examined. Such matters as keeping of accounts, keeping records of the centre's activities, filing, stock-taking, insurance, maintenance and repair are amply explained. Samples of form letters and accounts pages are included. There is a list of organisations that provide useful materials. The main business of the centre – the gathering and selecting of materials and making them available – is given pride of place, but the many other possible services that can be offered are suggested and described. The effective use of resources is the aim throughout, an a fund-raising is shown to have a continuing importance. Suggestions are given on all relevant topics. This guide offers workable, solid, thorough advice and information for anyone in the developing countries who is either working in this field already or who wishes to do so.It is written for anyone living in or working with rural communities (community leaders, teachers, extension workers, women's group leaders, youth group leaders, etc.) and who feel their community could benefit from having informational and learning resources. It is written as clearly and simply as possible and uses examples from various parts of the world. There are ample illustrations and checklists.
