Book Guide to Modeling Earth s Trapped Radiation Environment

Download or read book Guide to Modeling Earth s Trapped Radiation Environment written by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide serves as both an introduction to the phenomena of radiation in the space environment and the product engineering issues facing spacecraft designers. Emphasis is on the trapped radiation environment of the Earth which is known as the Van Allen Belts. The leading empirical models are described and the problems in using them are identified. Current radiation modeling efforts are also discussed, along with shielding design and optimization. The guide is intended for students, designers, mission planners, and others who need a ready understanding of this critical issue affecting spacecraft performance in Earth orbit.

Book Problems in Modeling the Earth s Trapped Radiation Environment

Download or read book Problems in Modeling the Earth s Trapped Radiation Environment written by James I. Vette and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the status of the trapped radiation models presently available from NASA. Problems regarding energy, spatial, and temporal coverage are discussed in detail. Suggestions are made as to which type of measurements are most needed for model improvements. (Author).

Book Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects

Download or read book Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects written by Henry B. Garrett and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the modern body of spacecraft charging knowledge—from first principles for the beginner to intermediate and advanced concepts The only book to blend the theoretical and practical aspects of spacecraft charging, Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects defines the environment that not only creates the aurora, but which also can have significant effects on spacecraft, such as disruption of science measurements and solar arrays from electrostatic discharge (ESD). It describes in detail the physics of the interaction phenomenon as well as how to construct spacecraft to enhance their survivability in the harsh environment of space. Combining the authors' extensive experience in spacecraft charging—and in their provision of design support to NASA, JPL, the commercial satellite market, and numerous other projects—this incredible book offers both a robust physics background and practical advice for neophytes in the field and experienced plasma physicists and spacecraft engineers. In addition to containing numerous equations, graphs, tables, references, and illustrations, Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects covers: Solar cell technology, especially higher voltage arrays, and the new design approaches that are appropriate for them Information about the space plasma environment New analytic computer codes to analyze spacecraft charging Spacecraft anomalies and failures which emphasized designs that are of greater importance than others

Book Models of the Trapped Radiation Environment Volume I Inner Zone Protons and Electrons

Download or read book Models of the Trapped Radiation Environment Volume I Inner Zone Protons and Electrons written by James I. Vette and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space systems planners--space engineers as well as physicists--require for their work accurate values of the fluxes and energy spectra of protons and electrons trapped in the geomagnetic field. Numerous measurements have been made of the Van Allen belt radiations on many satellites, with different instruments and at different times. Most of the experimenters organize their data in terms of McIlwain's B, L coordinates, but intercomparison of the results from different experiments is still complicated by temporal variations of the fluxes and differences in energy response of the various instruments used to obtain the data. A need existed, therefore, for collating the individual measurements and for constructing a model environment. This report contains a description of the model which has been developed for the inner radiation belt. The graphs in this report give a picture of the radiations; card decks containing the actual flux values have also been prepared and can be used in subroutines of larger computer programs. In addition, codes have been developed for integrating the flux along satellite orbits.
