Bickmore and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Action Theme 2 of the Strategy relates to the integration of landscape and biological diversity into other sectors including transport. This Code of Practice contributes to this progress. The Code relates to linear transport systems, comprising roads, railways and inland navigation along waterways, such as canals and rivers. It aims to assist elected representatives, decision makers, and practitioners as well as nature conservation bodies in the understanding of the main issues and solutions associated with the planning, design and use of linear transportation networks i.e. roads, railways and inland navigation channels, in relation to the landscape and biological diversity. Other modes of transport are outside the scope of this CodeThe Code sets a political and social framework and proposes policy options for the development of new, and the maintenance of existing linear transport systems in relation to biological and landscape diversity. By building on examples, the Code has developed a series of Practice Pointers.

Book Water Resources Management VIII

Download or read book Water Resources Management VIII written by C.A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Resources Management VIII contains papers presented at the eighth conference in a biennial series organised by the Wessex Institute. First held in 2001, the Conference includes the work of scientists, practitioners and other experts regarding the sustainable management of water resources. It is predicted that population growth and irregular precipitation due to climate change may lead to more restrict ed access to water in certain regions of the world. The problem will be aggravated by human activities that affect the quality of available water. In order to improve strategies for dealing with a scarcity of potable water, it is important to review and compare the performance of current technologies and practices in order to select those that will provide the most effective approaches. It is also important that technologies and practices be able to respond with agility to changing conditions. New ways of thinking are required in order to successfully predict future trends and prepare adequate sustainable solutions. The papers included in this book cover such topics as: Water Management and Planning; Water Rights and Accessibility; Water Markets and Policies; Climate Change; Irrigation; Urban Water Management; Hydraulic Engineering; Water Quality; Pollution Contaminants and Control; River Basin Management; Flood Risk Management; Geo-politics of Water; Water Resources and Economics; Governance and Regulations; Desalination; Water Services.

Book Internal Programs and Actions to Make Transit More Environmentally Friendly

Download or read book Internal Programs and Actions to Make Transit More Environmentally Friendly written by Alex Keen and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of public transit to take advantage of public concerns over environmental protection is hampered by the public perception that transit buses are serious pollution offenders. It is critical to overcome this image problem in order to persuade riders to shift to public transit for environmental reasons. To address this problem, the Canadian Urban Transit Association has conducted a study to guide transit organisations toward potential improvements. The results of this study are laid out in two parts: principles of environmental management and an environmental management handbook. The first part provides a general framework for developing an environmental management system and discusses fundamental principles and issues such as environmental policy development, management accountability, audit and verification, and consideration of needs of external public interests. The second part provides a practical perspective on actions that transit systems can take to implement environmental initiatives. The handbook includes an environmental program checklist for use as a starting point, a comprehensive list of potential environmental initiatives, and a detailed guide for organising an internal environmental audit.

Examples are presented on how biodiversity assessments can be made.
