Download or read book Submarine Slope Systems written by David Mark Hodgson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2005 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submarine slopes provide the critical link between shallow-water and deep-water sedimentary environments. They accumulate a sensitive record of sediment supply, accommodation creation/destruction, and tectonic processes during basin filling. There is a complex stratigraphic response to the interplay between parameters that control the evolution of submarine slope systems, e.g. slope gradient, topographic complexity, sediment flux and calibre, base-level change, tectonic setting, and post-depositional sediment remobilization processes. The increased understanding of submarine slope systems has been driven partly by the discovery of large hydrocarbon fields in morphologically complex slope settings, such as the Gulf of Mexico and offshore West Africa, and has led to detailed case studies and improved generic models for their evolution. This volume brings together research papers from modern, outcrop and subsurface settings to highlight these recent advances in understanding of the stratigraphic evolution of submarine slope systems.

Download or read book The New Knighthood written by Malcolm Barber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Order of the Temple was founded in 1119 with the limited aim of protecting pilgrims around Jerusalem. It developed into one of the most powerful corporations in the medieval world which lasted for nearly two centuries until its suppression in 1312. Despite the loss of its central archive in the sixteenth century, the Order left many records of its existence as the spearhead of crusading activity in Palestine and Syria, as the administrator of a great network of preceptories and lands in the Latin west, and as a banker and ship-owner. Because of the dramatic nature of its abolition, it has retained its grip on the imagination and consequently there has developed an entirely fictional 'after-history' in which its secret presence has been evoked to explain mysteries which range from masonic conspiracy to the survival of the Turin Shroud. This book offers a concise and up-to-date introduction to the reality and the myth of this extraordinary institution.

Download or read book The Art of Visual Exegesis written by Vernon K. Robbins and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical study for those interested in the intersection of art and biblical interpretation With a special focus on biblical texts and images, this book nurtures new developments in biblical studies and art history during the last two or three decades. Analysis and interpretation of specific works of art introduce guidelines for students and teachers who are interested in the relation of verbal presentation to visual production. The essays provide models for research in the humanities that move beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries erected in previous centuries. In particular, the volume merges recent developments in rhetorical interpretation and cognitive studies with art historical visual exegesis. Readers will master the tools necessary for integrating multiple approaches both to biblical and artistic interpretation. Features Resources for understanding the relation of texts to artistic paintings and images Tools for integrating multiple approaches both to biblical and artistic interpretation Sixty images and fifteen illustrations
Download or read book Narratives of Islamic Origins written by Fred McGraw Donner and published by Darwin Press, Incorporated. This book was released on 1998 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donner (Near Eastern history, Oriental Institute and U. of Chicago) challenges the scholarly assumption that the earliest Muslim believers wanted to write history out of "idle curiosity" and suggests that Islamic historical tradition resulted from a variety of challenges facing the community during the seventh to tenth centuries, C.E. He identifies the intellectual context in which Muslims began to think and write historically; sketches the issues, themes, and forms of the early Islamic historiographical tradition; considers the value of some radically revisionist interpretations of early Islam that have appeared in the past 20 years; and discusses the problem of sources in studying Islamic origins. Download or read book Coastline Changes written by Jan Harff and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume contributes to the current discussion of the role of natural and anthropogenic driving forces for coastal processes and their socioeconomic consequences. Special attention is paid to computerized tools that allow us--based on reconstruction of paleodevelopments--to predict the interference of processes on different time scales. On the one hand, the book provides an overview of the current model developments in describing vertical crustal movement, climate change forcing sea-level variations, the genesis of the basin fill along continental margins, and the interference of these processes in coastal development. On the other hand, it describes coastal development in key areas for different climate zones and geological settings. Coastline Changes is addressed to students and professionals in the geosciences, archaeology, social sciences, economy, and computer sciences. It will foster interdisciplinary discussion for the purpose of developing integrated concepts for sustainable development of the coastal zones."--Publisher's website.
Download or read book Genetics of Deafness written by B. Vona and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetics of Deafness offers a journey through areas crucial for understanding the causes and effects of hearing loss. It covers such topics as the latest approaches in diagnostics and deafness research and the current status and future promise of gene therapy for hearing restoration. The book begins by bringing attention to how hearing loss affects the individual and society. Methods of hearing loss detection and management throughout the lifespan are highlighted as is a particularly new development in newborn hearing screening. The challenges of hearing loss, an extremely heterogeneous impairment, are addressed. Additional topics include current research interests, ranging from novel gene identification to their functional validation in the mouse and zebrafish. The book ends with a chapter on the state of the art of gene therapy—an area that is certain to gain increasing attention as molecular mechanisms of deafness are better understood. Genetics of Deafness, written by leading authors in the field, is a must read for clinicians, researchers, and students. It provides much needed insight into the diagnosis and research of hereditary hearing loss.
