This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 1858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Projects as Arenas for Renewal and Learning Processes

Download or read book Projects as Arenas for Renewal and Learning Processes written by Rolf A. Lundin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing tendency to organize various aspects of business life by projects, and to set up temporary organizations in a competition where speed and adaptability becomes a major necessity. Organizing by projects is perceived as a good way to ensure action and to stress the importance of getting work done. However, there is a need to balance the stress on action so that learning capabilities are not only retained, but augmented. Projects as Arenas for Renewal and Learning Processes provides examples of how different types of projects function from a learning or renewal perspective, taken from a wide variety of real-life environments in industrial and public organizations. This book illustrates the mistaken habit of assuming too much in the project area: for example, project notions are, in fact, culture-dependent; classical market-oriented contracting business relations do not fit with the learning dimension of projects; and long-term learning on core competencies and product development projects need to be connected. The book is also intended to represent many of the research frontiers in the project field. Enhancing learning capabilities is - or should be - of a mutual concern to researchers and managers alike.

Book Everyday Engineering

Download or read book Everyday Engineering written by Dominique Vinck and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-01-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the everyday working world of engineers, written by researchers trained in both engineering and sociology. Everyday Engineering was written to help future engineers understand what they are going to be doing in their everyday working lives, so that they can do their work more effectively and with a broader social vision. It will also give sociologists deeper insights into the sociotechnical world of engineering. The book consists of ethnographic studies in which the authors, all trained in both engineering and sociology, go into the field as participant-observers. The sites and types of engineering explored include mechanical design in manufacturing industries, instrument design, software debugging, environmental management within companies, and the implementation of a system for separating household waste. The book is organized in three parts. The first part introduces the complexity of technical practices. The second part enters the social and cultural worlds of designers to grasp their practices and motivations. The third part examines the role of writing practices and graphical representation. The epilogue uses the case studies to raise a series of questions about how objects can be taken into account in sociological analyses of human organizations.

Book Science and Civilisation in China Part 6 Medicine

Download or read book Science and Civilisation in China Part 6 Medicine written by Joseph Needham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest volume in Joseph Needham's magisterial review of China's premodern scientific and technological traditions introduces the history of medicine. Following the deaths of Joseph Needham and Lu Gwei-Djen, a considerable amount of written material on the development of Chinese medicine awaited publication. This material has been gathered together by the editor, Nathan Sivin, in the five essays contained in this volume. They offer a broad and readable account of medicine in culture, including hygiene and preventive medicine, forensic medicine and immunology, and the examinations taken by some Chinese physicians for more than a thousand years. Professor Sivin has edited the essays, expanding them where appropriate and incorporating the results of recent research. His extensive introduction discusses the contributions of Needham and Lu, placing the essays in context, and surveys recent scholarship from China, Japan, Europe and the United States.

Book Simulation and Modeling of Systems of Systems

Download or read book Simulation and Modeling of Systems of Systems written by Pascal Cantot and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems engineering is the design of a complex interconnection of many elements (a system) to maximize a specific measure of system performance. It consists of two parts: modeling, in which each element of the system and its performance criteria are described; and optimization in which adjustable elements are tailored to allow peak performance. Systems engineering is applied to vast numbers of problems in industry and the military. An example of systems engineering at work is the control of the timing of thousands of city traffic lights to maximize traffic flow. The complex and intricate field of electronics and computers is perfectly suited for systems engineering analysis and in turn, advances in communications and computer technology have made more advanced systems engineering problems solvable. Thus, the two areas fed off of one another. This book is a basic introduction to the use of models and methods in the engineering design of systems. It is aimed at students as well as practicing engineers. The concept of the "systems of systems" is discussed extensively, after a critical comparison of the different definitions and a range of various practical illustrations. It also provides key answers as to what a system of systems is and how its complexity can be mastered.

Book Intellectual Property and Development

Download or read book Intellectual Property and Development written by Barbara Pick and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legal protection of geographical indications (GIs) is characterised by a variety of approaches which translates the many objectives attached to them. These range from protection of the consumers and producers’ interests against unfair competition practices, to territorial development, to preservation of cultural heritage and natural resources. Looking beyond formal legal protection for GIs, this book seeks to re-draw attention to what happens in the real world by exploring the opportunities and constraints which influence whether regional product branding initiatives are successful. It asks: what makes GIs work in practice and does the type of legal protection matter? To answer these questions, this book takes a comparative case study approach and draws upon empirical data collected from 12 GI initiatives in two countries, France and Vietnam. In doing so, this book not only provides new insights and perspectives to the ongoing international legal dispute over GIs, it also contributes to unpacking the factors that make GIs work in practice to bring about economic and non-economic benefits and ultimately support the empowerment of local producers. This book will be of interest to legal academics and practitioners as well as food sociologists, economists, anthropologists and rural development experts.
