Until now this question has been examined mainly by psychoanalysts, from their own perspective, but here it is investigated by a linguist, who systematically explores two domains. The first is related to the sign and symbol, where the meeting of Freud, Saussure and Hjelmselv occurred; whereas in the second, that of the signifier, Saussure reappears escorted by Lacan. But Freud is not far away, since the.

Book Teaching and Learning Mathematics in Multilingual Classrooms

Download or read book Teaching and Learning Mathematics in Multilingual Classrooms written by Anjum Halai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary concerns in mathematics education recognize that in the increasingly technological and globalized world, with concomitant change in population demographics (e.g. immigration, urbanization) and a change in the status of languages (e.g. English as a dominant language of science and technology) multilingualism in classrooms is a norm rather than an exception. Shifts in perspective also view language not simply as an instrument for cognition with all learners equipped with this instrument in service of learning, although clearly in the classroom that remains of importance. Rather, it is now also being acknowledged that language use is inherently political, so that the language that gets official recognition in the classroom is invariably the language of the powerful elite, or the dominant societal language, or in the case of post-colonial contexts the language of the colonisers. From this socio-political role of language in learning quite different issues arise for teaching, learning and curriculum for linguistically marginalized learners than that of cognition (e.g. immigrants, second language learners, other). Policies on language in education are being considered and re-considered with specific reference to mathematics teaching and learning. Given the policy environment, globally the proposed publication is timely. This edited collection draws on recent, emerging insights and understandings about the approaches to improving policy and practice in mathematics education and mathematics teacher education in multilingual settings. It presents, and discusses critically, examples of work from a range of contexts and uses these examples to draw out key issues for research in education in language diverse settings including teaching, learning, curriculum and fit these with appropriate policy and equity approaches. With contributions from all over the world, especially novice researchers in low income countries, this book is a valuable resource for courses in Mathematics Education and related social sciences both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as for students of international development.

Book Teaching L2 Composition

Download or read book Teaching L2 Composition written by Dana R. Ferris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular, comprehensive theory-to-practice text is designed to help teachers understand the task of writing, L2 writers, the different pedagogical models used in current composition teaching, and reading–writing connections. Moving from general themes to specific pedagogical concerns, it includes practice-oriented chapters on the role of genre, task construction, course and lesson design, writing assessment, feedback, error treatment, and classroom language (grammar, vocabulary, style) instruction. Although all topics are firmly grounded in relevant research, a distinguishing feature of the text is the array of hands-on, practical examples, materials, and tasks that pre- and in-service teachers can use to develop the complex skills involved in teaching second language writing. Each chapter includes Questions for Reflection, Further Reading and Resources, Reflection and Review, and Application Activities. An ideal text for L2 teacher preparation courses, courses that include both L1 and L2 students, and workshops for instructors of L2 writers in academic (secondary and postsecondary) settings, the accessible synthesis of theory and research enables readers to see the relevance of the field’s knowledge base to their own present or future classroom settings and student writers.

Book Self Direction for Lifelong Learning

Download or read book Self Direction for Lifelong Learning written by Philip C. Candy and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1991-04-16 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the book is to present a comprehensive survey and analysis of the concept of self direction in learning, to trace its ideological roots, to examine its history, to explore its manifestations in various fields of education, and to provide some specific insights into strategies that may be used to induce or develop self direction in learners. Basically, then, the book is about the development and exercise of self directedness in learning, especially in adulthood. It celebrates individuality but at the same time recognises the essentially social nature of learning and of human existence. It attempts to reconcile and integrate ideas and practices - some very familiar and some quite novel - derived from many parts of the world, many domains and contexts of learning, and many historical periods. It is a tapestry woven from threads provided largely by others.
