Download or read book Managing Contaminated Sites written by D. Kofi Asante-Duah and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contaminated sites and facilities may pose significant risks to the local populations because of the potential health and environmental effects associated with environmental contamination problems. Also affected are property owners and financiers due to reduced property values and possible financial liabilities. The effective management of contaminated sites is therefore an important environmental issue, requiring careful planning. This book addresses the issues relevant to the investigation and management of contaminated sites, emphasising problem diagnosis/characterisation and the development of site restoration/corrective action programs. The book focuses on methodologies that will allow scientifically justifiable/defensible, technically feasible, and economically viable corrective action assessment and response decisions to be made. This includes methods for developing effectual site restoration tasks, methods for evaluating the progress of corrective action programs, and the application of risk assessment methods as a decision-making tool. The goal of the book is to synthesise technically sound principles and techniques that can be applied globally to contaminated sites in different regions of the world.
Download or read book A Federal Approach to Contaminated Sites written by Canada. Contaminated Sites Management Working Group and published by Le Groupe de travail. This book was released on 1999 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document has been developed to provide a common federal approach to managing contaminated sites under federal custody. The intended audience for this approach is managers & operational personnel who are responsible for managing contaminated sites on federal lands. The approach incorporates risk-based environmental management which assesses risks to human health & the natural environment under current & intended-use scenarios and implements risk management solutions considered to be protective of those risks. Objectives, methodologies, and intended outputs are described for ten steps of the approach, from identification of suspect sites through detailed testing to final reporting & long-term monitoring. Appendices include a list of guidance documents and generic statements of work for various steps of the approach.

Download or read book Description and Sampling of Contaminated Soils written by J. Russell Boulding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of EPA's bestselling book, Description and Sampling of Contaminated Soils: A Field Guide, Second Edition, has been revised and significantly expanded over the original edition. An ideal reference for anyone involved in site investigations, this guide describes how to determine the amount and extent of soil contamination and potential for movement of contaminants in the soil and groundwater. It contains checklists, tables, and step-by-step descriptions of methods and procedures for: Cost-effective, detailed site investigations for evaluating the potential for contaminant transport Field collection of information on soil engineering properties required for remediation selection and design This guide also features an adaptation of soil description procedures used by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS) for investigating contaminated sites. The SCS soil description and classification procedures, when used in combination with the Unified Soil Classification System currently used by geologists and engineers, greatly improves contaminated site assessments.

Download or read book A Protocol for the Derivation of Environmental and Human Health Soil Quality Guidelines written by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. Subcommittee on Environmental Quality Criteria for Contaminated Sites and published by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. This book was released on 1996 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides the rationale and guidance for developing environmental and human health soil quality guidelines for contaminated sites in Canada. It begins with background information on the National Contaminated Sites Remediation Program assessment and remediation framework, including the scientific tools developed to help assess and remediate contaminated sites. Information on the principles behind the soil quality guidelines derivation protocol is also included. This is followed by description of the processes for deriving environmental and human health guidelines. The protocol considers the effects of contaminated soil exposure on human and ecological receptors for given land uses (agricultural, residential/parkland, commercial, and industrial). The final section gives guidance on derivation of the final soil quality guideline. Appendices include information on methods and models employed in the ecological sections of the document, and on check mechanisms for indirect exposure from soil contaminants for the human health guidelines.

Download or read book Bioavailability of Contaminants in Soils and Sediments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioavailability refers to the extent to which humans and ecological receptors are exposed to contaminants in soil or sediment. The concept of bioavailability has recently piqued the interest of the hazardous waste industry as an important consideration in deciding how much waste to clean up. The rationale is that if contaminants in soil and sediment are not bioavailable, then more contaminant mass can be left in place without creating additional risk. A new NRC report notes that the potential for the consideration of bioavailability to influence decision-making is greatest where certain chemical, environmental, and regulatory factors align. The current use of bioavailability in risk assessment and hazardous waste cleanup regulations is demystified, and acceptable tools and models for bioavailability assessment are discussed and ranked according to seven criteria. Finally, the intimate link between bioavailability and bioremediation is explored. The report concludes with suggestions for moving bioavailability forward in the regulatory arena for both soil and sediment cleanup.
