Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brand warfare is real. Guerrilla Marketing details the Colombian government’s efforts to transform Marxist guerrilla fighters in the FARC into consumer citizens. Alexander L. Fattal shows how the market has become one of the principal grounds on which counterinsurgency warfare is waged and postconflict futures are imagined in Colombia. This layered case study illuminates a larger phenomenon: the convergence of marketing and militarism in the twenty-first century. Taking a global view of information warfare, Guerrilla Marketing combines archival research and extensive fieldwork not just with the Colombian Ministry of Defense and former rebel communities, but also with political exiles in Sweden and peace negotiators in Havana. Throughout, Fattal deftly intertwines insights into the modern surveillance state, peace and conflict studies, and humanitarian interventions, on one hand, with critical engagements with marketing, consumer culture, and late capitalism on the other. The result is a powerful analysis of the intersection of conflict and consumerism in a world where governance is increasingly structured by brand ideology and wars sold as humanitarian interventions. Full of rich, unforgettable ethnographic stories, Guerrilla Marketing is a stunning and troubling analysis of the mediation of global conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “guerrilla” may bring to mind a small band of armed soldiers, moving in the dead of night on a stealth mission. In the case of guerrilla gardening, the soldiers are planters, the weapons are shovels, and the mission is to transform an abandoned lot into a thing of beauty. Once an environmentalist’s nonviolent direct action for inner-city renewal, this movement is spreading to all types of people in cities around the world. These modern-day Johnny Appleseeds perform random acts of gardening, often without permission. Typical targets are vacant lots, railway land, underused public squares, and back alleys. The concept is simple, whimsical, and has the cheeky appeal of being a not-quite-legal call to action. Dig in some soil, plant a few seeds, or mend a sagging fence—one good deed inspiring another, with win-win benefits all around. Guerrilla Gardening outlines the power-to-the-people campaign for greening our cities. Tips for effective involvement include: • Finding plants and seeds cheap (or free) • Handling city officials • Getting the dirt on soil • Planting to bring back the birds • Knowing when to ask first Social activists, city dwellers, and longtime gardeners will delight in this fast-paced and funny call to arms. David Tracey is a journalist and environmental designer who operates EcoUrbanist in Vancouver. He is executive director of Tree City Canada, a nonprofit ecological engagement group.

Book Urban Guerrilla Warfare

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony Joes
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2007-04-20
  • ISBN : 0813172233
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Urban Guerrilla Warfare written by Anthony Joes and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2007-04-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guerrilla insurgencies continue to rage across the globe, fueled by ethnic and religious conflict and the easy availability of weapons. At the same time, urban population centers in both industrialized and developing nations attract ever-increasing numbers of people, outstripping rural growth rates worldwide. As a consequence of this population shift from the countryside to the cities, guerrilla conflict in urban areas, similar to the violent response to U.S. occupation in Iraq, will become more frequent. Urban Guerrilla Warfare traces the diverse origins of urban conflicts and identifies similarities and differences in the methods of counterinsurgent forces. In this wide-ranging and richly detailed comparative analysis, Anthony James Joes examines eight key examples of urban guerrilla conflict spanning half a century and four continents: Warsaw in 1944, Budapest in 1956, Algiers in 1957, Montevideo and São Paulo in the 1960s, Saigon in 1968, Northern Ireland from 1970 to 1998, and Grozny from 1994 to 1996. Joes demonstrates that urban insurgents violate certain fundamental principles of guerrilla warfare as set forth by renowned military strategists such as Carl von Clausewitz and Mao Tse-tung. Urban guerrillas operate in finite areas, leaving themselves vulnerable to encirclement and ultimate defeat. They also tend to abandon the goal of establishing a secure base or a cross-border sanctuary, making precarious combat even riskier. Typically, urban guerrillas do not solely target soldiers and police; they often attack civilians in an effort to frighten and disorient the local population and discredit the regime. Thus urban guerrilla warfare becomes difficult to distinguish from simple terrorism. Joes argues persuasively against committing U.S. troops in urban counterinsurgencies, but also offers cogent recommendations for the successful conduct of such operations where they must be undertaken.

Book Confessions of the Guerrilla Girls

Download or read book Confessions of the Guerrilla Girls written by Guerrilla Girls (Group of artists) and published by Harper Perennial. This book was released on 1995 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1985, a group of anonymous women wearing gorilla masks and brandishing glue brushes have taken zap actions at the art world's "stale, male, Yale" establishment. Their wonderfully smart-ass posters (example: "Advantages of being a woman artist: Working without the pressure of success, knowing your career might pick up after you're eighty..".) have bedecked city walls, converted elitist curators, become collector's items, and even found their way into museum collections. Their work - and this book - offers proof that humor is a great, blunt-edged weapon against evil. The Guerrilla Girls are a collective of female artists and art-world professionals. Their largest contingent is in New York, but they have also been sighted all over the United States, across Europe, and wherever truth, justice, and the American way of discrimination still prevail.

Book Guerrilla Television

Download or read book Guerrilla Television written by Michael Shamberg and published by New York : Holt, Rinehart and Winston. This book was released on 1971 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents ways to break the stranglehold of broadcast television on the American mind by using low-cost portable video-tape cameras, video cassettes, and cable television to design alternative television networks that favor portability and decentralization. The author's contention is that politics are obsolete and that information tools and tactics are a more powerful means of social change. To achieve true democracy, the author suggests that we develop a sense of media ecology in what he calls "media America," or the information environment. This is the first manual or how-to book for new media tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRAIN THE INTERNET TO SELL BOOKS FOR YOU Book marketing doesn't need to be an exhausting hamster wheel of promotion and publicity. Put your book sales on autopilot... so you can focus on writing your next bestseller. FAST AND EFFECTIVE BOOK MARKETING This book is a crash course on some of the more creative book marketing strategies I've discovered in my first year of publishing fiction. It will provide simple, actionable, measurable steps to publishing a high quality book quickly, doing only as much marketing as is necessary to launch your book like a rock star, and keep it selling enough to support you while you write another. I only mention the things I actually use, that I know work, and ignore options that don't get results. We'll discuss paid advertising, release strategies, pricing and pre-orders, book giveaways, how to target your audience, viral exposure and press coverage, marketing hacks, and how to reach your first $1000 on Kindle. LAUNCH BIG EVEN IF YOU'RE STARTING SMALL Guerrilla is a style of warfare intended to surprise and harass enemies. It can also mean using unconventional and usually inexpensive means to generate interest or raise concern among the public. That's basically how I'll use it: book marketing strategies from the trenches to help you win the publishing war. However, instead of "surprise and harass" I will focus on "surprise and delight." First you need to show up and get in front of the right people. Then you need to surprise and delight them. You need to be remarkable enough to be noticed. Few authors are using these strategies (yet) so it's relatively easy to outrank your competition, get more visibility and reach new readers.

Book Guerrilla Warfare

Download or read book Guerrilla Warfare written by Che Guevara and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Che Guevara, the larger-than-life hero of the 1959 revolutionary victory that overturned the Cuban dictatorship, believed that revolution would also topple the imperialist governments in Latin America. Che's call to action, his proclamation of "invincibility"-the ultimate victory of revolutionary forces-continues to influence the course of Latin American history and international relations. His amazing life story has lifted him to almost legendary status. This edition of Che's classic work Guerrilla Warfare contains the text of his book, as well as two later essays titled "Guerrilla Warfare: A Method" and "Message to the Tricontinental." A detailed introduction by Brian Loveman and Thomas M. Davies, Jr., examines Guevara's text, his life and political impact, the situation in Latin America, and the United States' response to Che and to events in Latin America. Loveman and Davies also provide in-depth case studies that apply Che's theories on revolution to political situations in seven Latin American countries from the 1960s to the present. Also included are political chronologies of each country discussed in the case studies and a postscript tying the analyses together. This book will help students gain a better understanding of Che's theoretical contribution to revolutionary literature and the inspiration that his life and Guerrilla Warfare have provided to revolutionaries since the 1960s. This volume is an invaluable addition to courses in Latin American studies and political science.
