En algunas regiones, se ha comprobado que las inversiones en sistemas de abastecimiento de agua y de saneamiento pueden ser rentables desde un punto de vista económico, ya que la disminución de los efectos adversos para la salud y la consiguiente reducción de los costos derivados son superiores al costo de las intervenciones. Esto es cierto para diversos tipos de inversiones, desde las grandes infraestructuras de abastecimiento de agua al tratamiento doméstico del agua. La experiencia ha demostrado asimismo que las medidas destinadas a mejorar el acceso al agua potable favorecen en particular a los pobres, tanto de zonas rurales como urbanas, y pueden ser un componente eficaz de las estrategias de mitigación de la pobreza.Centrándonos en la actual Guía rápida se describen el agua en el medioambiente, la relación entre el agua y la salud, las aguas de consumo público y por último las aguas residuales, su tratamiento y el impacto ambiental.En la elaboración de esta Guía rápida se incluye una revisión en profundidad de los métodos utilizados para garantizar la calidad e inocuidad microbiológica.
