The main aspects addressed at this conference were those related to the causes of decay of cultural materials (stone, ceramics, metals, paintings, mortars, timber, adobes, etc); the characterization of their properties and the assessment of analytical techniques for their study, with a focus on non-destructive techniques. Many of the studies stress the importance of salt crystallization, atmospheric pollution and biodeterioration and relate these specific factors to decay. A variety of case studies are included, as well as an examination of policies and management. This book will be useful to professionals and scientists working in a variety of fields related to heritage: geologists, geographers, chemists, physicists, biologists, architects, engineers, restorers, historians, archaeologists, policy makers and the general public.

Book excerpt: The Future of the Past is a biennial conference generally carried out during the commemoration date of the incorporation of Santa Ana de Los Ríos de Cuenca Ecuador as a World Heritage Site (WHS). It initiated in 2014, organized by the City Preservation Management research project (CPM) of the University of Cuenca, to create a space for dialoguing among interested actors in the cultural heritage field. Since then, this space has served to exchange initiatives and to promote coordinated actions based on shared responsibility, in the local context. The third edition of this conference took place in the context of the 20th anniversary of being listed as WHS and a decade of CPM as the Southern host of the PRECOM3OS UNESCO Chair (Preventive Conservation, Maintenance and Monitoring of Monuments and Sites). For the very first time, and thanks to the collaboration with the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation of the University of Leuven (Belgium), the conference expanded its local scope. On this occasion, contributions reflected round a worldwide challenge in the cultural field: revealing the paths towards participatory governance of cultural heritage. Participatory governance is understood as institutional decision-making structures supported by shared responsibilities and rights among diverse actors.

This goes hand in hand with a growing interest for local communities’ involvement in heritage management plans. Although this shift in discourse is acknowledged, its practical implementation seems often too ambitious and not easy to apply. Therefore, the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (RLICC, University of Leuven) considered “community participation in valuing and managing heritage” a relevant and timely topic for its annual international conference, the “Thematic Week”. This volume reports on the lectures and fruitful debates dedicated to this theme during the 2014 Thematic Week, which took place January 22nd-24th. The conference entailed an integral and holistic approach towards community participation. Focusing traditionally on the conservation of the historic urban environment and immovable heritage, the RLICC took the opportunity to involve both the intangible and movable heritage fields which have a more apparent relation with community participation in managing heritage. The contributions by different international authors, including theoretical reflections, policy / discourse analyses and practical case studies, show that a balanced approach is needed. They evidence that more research is required on the success and on failure factors associated with community participation in heritage preservation and management projects. It appears that taking full advantage of public participation requires considering heritage as an economic, social and intellectual resource for local communities. These added benefits can enhance the value a community attributes to heritage and encourages them to maintain it. This publication was developed in context of the UNESCO Chair on Preventive Conservation, Monitoring and Maintenance of Monuments and Sites (PRECOM3OS), established at the RLICC in collaboration with Monumentenwacht Vlaanderen and the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Cuenca in Ecuador and financially supported by the Janssen Fund for Preventive Conservation.

This volume describes the design and construction of an oxygen-free, hermetically sealed, display and storage case developed by the Getty Conservation Institute for the long-term protection of such objects. The case was originally designed as a collaborative project between the Egyptian Antiquities Organization and the GCI to conserve the Royal Mummy Collection at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Seven chapters cover the protection of cultural objects from environmental deterioration by reducing exposure to oxygen and by using inert gases for biodeterioration control. Also included are details on how the design and construction of the oxygen-free case has been adapted for other applications, specifically for the original documents of the Constitution of India in New Dehli and for the mummy collections at the Egyptian Museum and at the Museu Victor Balaguer in Vilanova i la Geltru, Spain. The Research in Conservation reference series presents the findings of research conducted by the Getty Conservation Institute and its individual and institutional research partners, as well as state-of-the-art reviews of conservation literature. Each volume covers a topic of current interest to conservators and conservation scientists.
