Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Study of Common Plants: An Introduction to Botany These exercises have been prepared for classes in high schools and other institutions of similar grade, and are intended to indicate, in a general way, the nature of the work that in the judgment of the writer should be undertaken with young people who are just beginning the systematic study of common forms of plant life. They were suggested by frequent inquiries of teachers regarding the preparation in botany now required for admission to the University of Michigan. No originality is claimed for the subject-matter or its treatment, although much time has been spent in the effort to develop a natural and practicable method of approaching the study of living things. While the study of relationship holds the first place, the attention of the pupil is directed at every step to the physiological significance of observed facts; and although this will hardly be approved by those who attempt to separate sharply the domain of morphology from that of physiology, it has seemed to the writer better to follow Nature than be cramped by such artificial barriers. Some of the exercises will perhaps appear too simple and others too difficult, but a judicious selection on the part of the teacher will do much to correct this. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Study of Common Plants: An Introduction to Botany In the second edition, prepared in response to helpful suggestions from many teachers, a glossary and index, together with a chapter on fungi, have been added and several minor changes introduced. The arrangement re mains substantially as before, but teachers who prefer to start with the simpler forms and proceed to the more highly developed ones can readily do so by beginning with the section on algae, instead of following the order of the book. To those who approach the work in a scientific spirit, it is superfluous to say that the student's intellectual life has a developmental history which it is quite as need ful to take into account as the genetic succession of plants. There can hardly be more interesting problems than those presented to the teacher in his relation to this higher realm of biological science. Book Field Forest and Garden Botany

Download or read book Field Forest and Garden Botany written by Asa Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field, Forest, and Garden Botany: A Simple Introduction to the Common Plants of the United States, East of the Mississippi, Both Wild and Cultivated This work consists of the "Lessons in Botany" and the "Field, Forest and Garden Botany," bound together in one complete volume, forming a most popular and comprehensive School Botany, adapted to beginners and advanced classes, to Agricultural Colleges and Schools, as well as to all other grades in which the science is taught; it is also adapted for use as a hand-book to assist in analyzing plants and flowers in field study of botany, either by classes or individuals. The book is intended to furnish Botanical Classes and beginners with an easier introduction to the Plants of this country, and a much more comprehensive work, than is the Manual. Beginning with the first principles, it progresses by easy stages until the student, who is at all diligent, is enabled to master the intricacies of the science. It is a Grammar and Dictionary of Botany, and comprises the common Herbs, Shrubs, and Trees of the Southern as well as the Northern and Middle States, including the commonly cultivated, as well as the native species in fields, gardens, pleasure-grounds, or house culture, and even the conservatory plants ordinarily met with. This work supplies a great desideratum to the Botanist and Botanical Teacher, there being no similar class-book published in this country. Download or read book Field Forest and Garden Botany written by Asa Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field, Forest, and Garden Botany: A Simple Introduction to the Common Plants of the United States East of the 100th Meridian, Both Wild and Cultivated This book is intended to furnish botanical classes and beginners generally with an easier introduction to the plants of this country than is the Manual, and one which includes the common cultivated as well as the native species. It is made more concise and simple, 1. By the use of somewhat less technical language; 2. By the omis sion, as far as possible, of the more recondite and, for the present purpose, less essential characters; and also of most of the obscure, insignificant, or rare plants which students will not be apt to meet with or to examine, or which are quite too difficult for beginners; such as the Sedges, most Grasses, and the crowd of Golden Rods, Asters, Sunflowers, and the' like, which reduire very critical study. On the other hand, this small volume is more comprehensive than the Manual, since it comprises the common herbs, shrubs, and trees of the Southern as well as the Northern and Middle States, and all which are commonly cultivated or planted, for ornament or use, in fields, gardens, pleasure-grounds, or in house-culture, including even the conservatory plants ordinarily met with.
