Book Development and Challenge

Download or read book Development and Challenge written by Tai-Chee Wong and published by Marshall Cavendish Academic. This book was released on 1999 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Southeast Asia sheds its colonial vest, its development and transformation into young nation-states pick up momentum as globalization and technology become the backdrop of the new millennium. Some of the most crucial issues confronting Southeast Asia today are addressed in this volume as ASEAN takes stock of its achievements after three decades and recaptures its vision for the new millennium. The post colonial era in the region signaled a reconceptualization of geographical space as Southeast Asian countries established themselves territorially and harnessed their energies to work collectively in the new global equation. This led to formation of organizations, such as ASEAN, AFTA and the economic growth triangles, which represent a clear Southeast Asian voice internationally. Paradoxically, development in Southeast Asia brings new challenges as globalization and new economic trends lead to intensive intra-regional population movements, the rise of megacities, the search to resolve

Book Southeast Asia Transformed

Download or read book Southeast Asia Transformed written by Chia Lin Sien and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2003 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia, with a total population of 520 million, remains a region characterized by fragmentation, diversity, and considerable internal conflict despite the unifying influence of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), formed some thirty-five years ago. In the new millennium, it has lost the distinction of being one of the worlds faster growing group of economies since the 1997 financial crisis. While it has benefited from the winds of globalization, it has now to cope with the painful adjustments to problems that stem from the inadequacies of good governance and structural changes.

Book Southeast Asia beyond Crises and Traps

Download or read book Southeast Asia beyond Crises and Traps written by Boo Teik Khoo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines five countries in South East Asia that are instructive case studies of how the region has had to negotiate pathways of development beyond crises and traps. At two ends of just one decade, 1997–2007, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam all had to weather the shocks of an East Asian financial crisis and a global financial crisis. Some economies might have buckled completely under those shocks and been condemned to long-term stagnation. Yet these five economies, part of the larger Asian region, emerged with continued if slower economic growth. An important theme of this book is that their resilience has been partly derived from the pursuit of growth and competitiveness along less known or recommended pathways. The chapters of this book take a novel approach to South East Asia’s search for growth and improvement. They do not begin by evaluating how far macro-level performances would take a particular country towards high-income status. Instead they provide original insights into actual cases of intermediate ways of achieving growth, upgrading and income improvement in non-privileged sectors. Such cases may hold more relevant lessons for the majority of developing countries than the experiences of highly developed economies.

Book The SIJORI Cross Border Region

Download or read book The SIJORI Cross Border Region written by Francis E Hutchinson and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years ago, the governments of Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia agreed to jointly promote the city-state, the state of Johor in Malaysia, and the Riau Islands in Indonesia. Facilitated by common cultural references, a more distant shared history, and complementary attributes, interactions between the three territories developed quickly. Logistics networks have proliferated and production chains link firms based in one location with affiliates or transport facilities in the other territories. These cross-border links have enabled all three locations to develop their economies and enjoy rising standards of living. Initially economic in nature, the interactions between Singapore, Johor, and the Riau Islands have multiplied and grown deeper. Today, people cross the borders to work, go to school, or avail of an increasing range of goods and services. New political, social, and cultural phenomena have developed. Policymakers in the various territories now need to reconcile economic imperatives and issues of identity and sovereignty. Enabled by their proximity and increasing opportunities, families have also begun to straddle borders, with resulting questions about citizenship and belonging. Using the Cross-Border Region framework - which seeks to analyse these three territories as one entity simultaneously divided and bound together by its borders - this book brings together scholars from a range of disciplines. Its 18 chapters and more than 20 maps examine the interaction between Singapore, Johor, and the Riau Islands over the past quarter-century, and seek to shed light on how these territories could develop in the future.

Book Mega Urban Regions of Southeast Asia

Download or read book Mega Urban Regions of Southeast Asia written by Ira M. Robinson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinguishing feature of recent urbanization in the ASEAN countries of Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia is the outward extension of their mega-cities (Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur) beyond the metropolitan borders, resulting in the establishment of new towns, industrial estates, and housing projects in previously rural areas. This process has both positive and negative effects. On one side, household incomes and employment opportunities are increasing, but on the other, the growth often causes serious problems in terms of environmental deterioration, conflicting land uses, and inadequate housing and service provisions. Mega Urban Regions of Southeast Asia is the first comprehensive work on the subject of ASEAN mega-urban regions. The contributors review T.G. McGee's original idea of desakota zones, and offer arguments both for and against this concept, making a significant contribution to our understanding of the true face of ASEAN cities. The book brings together authors from around the world and will be of interest to a wide audience, including demographers, urban planners, geographers, sociologists, economists, civil servants and development consultants.
