Book excerpt: Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) is an ecologically important species in forests of the northeastern U.S. Red oak seedlings are critical to study as their life stage is the toughest age for survival. Red oak seedling leaf damage and growth allocation are potentially impacted by the nearby mature red oak trees due to feedbacks with pathogens and herbivores, impacted by the abundance of other red oak seedlings with whom they might compete with or impacted by the available canopy light. We used a field experiment involving the transplanting of seedlings within Harvard Forest to investigate these three environmental factors on red oak seedling leaf damage and biomass allocation. We measured seedling leaf damage levels and calculated biomass ratios to measure allocation. Results suggest that the presence of nearby mature red oak trees increased the herbivory stress on red oak seedlings, which could potentially impact longerterm survival. Seedling leaf and stem biomass allocation was explained by leaf damage but not by any other factors in this experiment. Knowing how environmental factors affect seedling biomass allocation could help scientist better understand their responses across structurally diverse ecosystems and find more effective ways to predict seedling survival and the future composition of the forest.

Book excerpt: Northern red oak (NRO), Quercus rubra L., is a valuable tree species for timber, wildlife, restoration, and urban forestry. Seed production and growth responses from different maternal sources can be widely variable. Rooting choice stem cuttings of NRO could prove to be a time-saving nursery practice, yielding prime candidates for outplanting. This study sought to develop effective protocols to root NRO stem cuttings at high frequencies and to examine the effects of several factors during rooting and subsequent containerized growth. Supplemental light and heat were administered to determine the effects of artificially extending the growing season of successfully rooted cuttings. Different container sizes were used to determine which size encouraged optimum containerized growth and survival. In addition, shoot production enhancement was studied through pruning of field grown stock seedlings so that stem cutting material could be readily available throughout the growing season; different seedling sources were used to examine provenance variability for shoot production. Also, early (ES) and late season (LS) cuttings were taken to determine the viability of rooting at different times during the growing season. After two seasons of containerized growth, final measurements of NRO rooted cuttings were recorded to determine efficacy of prior treatments. Geographic source and prune height treatments were both found to have significant impact on the number of new shoots generated by NRO stock plants. We found large stem caliper may enhance donor plant ability to generate new shoots for rooting as compared to small stem caliper. Geographic source and prune height treatment significantly affected rooting ability of ES cuttings, which rooted at 64% overall. Rooting percentages were lower for LS stem cuttings (53% overall), but showed the possibility of LS rooting for nursery operations; prune height alone was statistically significant for rooting ability of LS cuttings. In a general sense, every ecologist uses the concept in teaching and research, but no two ecologists seem to have a unified concept of the details of succession. The word was used by Thoreau to describe, from a naturalist's point of view, the general changes observed during the transition of an old field to a forest. As data accumulated, a lengthy taxonomy of succession developed around early twentieth century ecologists such as Cooper, Clements, and Gleason. Now, nearer the end of the century, and after much discussion concerning the nature of vegetation communities, where do ecologists stand with respect to knowledge of ecological succession? The intent of this book is not to rehash classic philosophies of succession that have emerged through the past several decades of study, but to provide a forum for ecologists to present their current research and present-day interpretation of data. To this end, we brought together a group of scientists currently studying terrestrial plant succession, who represent research experience in a broad spectrum of different ecosystem types. The meeting was held under the auspices ofIUFRO WPS 2. 01. 13 'Root Physiology and Symbiosis,' and its aim was to bring together scientific researchers, foresters and arboriculturalists, to discuss current problems in structural root research and disseminate knowledge to an audience from a wide disciplinary background. For the first time in an international conference, emphasis was placed on presenting recent reseach in the field of tree anchorage mechanics and root biomechanics. The way in which tree stability can be affected by root system symmetry and architecture was addressed, as well as how movement during wind sway can influence the development and shape of woody roots. The role of different nursery and planting techniques was discussed, in relation to effects on root system form and development. Root response to different environmental stresses, including water, temperature, nutrient and mechanical stress was addressed in detail. The structure and function of woody roots was also considered at different levels, from coarse to fine roots, with several papers discussing the interaction between roots and the rhizosphere. One of the conference highlights was the presentation of new methods in root research, by a series of workshops held at LRBB-INRA, Pierroton, on the northern border of the Gascony forest.
