Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variable-valent iron impurities have been suggested as the source of photorefractive charge carriers in BaTiO3. Very high-purity BaTiO3 crystals were grown with transition-metal impurity levels below the 10 to the 16th power/cc baseline estimate for photorefractivity. Iron-doped crystals also were grown with concentrations of 5, 50, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 ppm Fe. A study of some growth problems effecting purity and perfection of TSSG BaTiO3 crystals was performed. Some preliminary growth experiments in an rf heated Czochralski furnace indicated that it might be possible to utilize the cleaner growth environment of this type of equipment for BaTiO3. Studies were also conducted to investigate the problem of capping after seeding in the TSSG process. It was concluded that convective instabilities in the melt were probably the limiting factor. Book excerpt: Barium titanate has been used for many nonlinear optical applications primarily because it has high grain and high self-pumped phase conjugate reflectivities. However, barium titanate has had a relatively slow response time, and thus low sensitivity. Therefore, it has not been suited to real-time operations. In this report we will describe the modifications in crystal growth, doping, reduction, and poling that have produced barium titanate crystals with the fastest photorefractive response time reported to date, approximately 21 microseconds with a beam-coupling gain coefficient of 38.7 cm(exp -1) and the highest sensitivity reported to date of 3.44 cm(exp 3)/kJ. The sensitivity of these barium titanate crystals is comparable to or greater than other photorefractive oxides. We will show, for the first time, beam-coupling in barium titanate at video frame rates. We infer from response time measurements that barium titanate has a phonon limited mobility. Also, photorefractive response time measurements as a function of the crystallographic orientation and grating wave vector for our cobalt-doped oxygen reduced crystals indicate that their faster response time arise because of an increase in the free carrier lifetime. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: This thesis mainly focused on investigating the suitable synthesis methods to get barium titanate (BaTiO3) and strontium titanate (SrTiO3) nanocubes without using any capping agents. Two synthesis methods (hydrothermal and molten-salt) were used to synthesize BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to identify phases and determine the phase purity of synthesized BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanoparticles. The morphology and formation mechanisms were investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was verified that BaTiO3 nanocubes can be successfully synthesized by molten-salt method, while SrTiO3 nanocubes were obtained by hydrothermal method. The synthesized nanocubes for both materials have high crystallinity and high purity. The formation mechanism of BaTiO3 nanocubes was proposed due to the low surface energy of {100} crystal planes. Crystal planes with low surface energy are preferred in the crystal growth stage. The formation of SrTiO3 nanocubes was proposed due to the crystal growth of {100} crystal planes and face-to-face attachment. These mechanisms provided clear explanations for the formation of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanocubes without using any capping agents, which can be applied to other metal oxide nanocubes. Future studies can be focused on the synthesis of other metal oxide nanocubes by using the formation mechanisms proposed in this thesis.
