Download or read book Growing up on the Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea written by Barbara Senft and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the children’s socialization on the Trobriands. After a survey of ethnographic studies on childhood, the book zooms in on indigenous ideas of conception and birth-giving, the children’s early development, their integration into playgroups, their games and their education within their `own little community’ until they reach the age of seven years. During this time children enjoy much autonomy and independence. Attempts of parental education are confined to a minimum. However, parents use subtle means to raise their children. Educational ideologies are manifest in narratives and in speeches addressed to children. They provide guidelines for their integration into the Trobrianders’ “balanced society” which is characterized by cooperation and competition. It does not allow individual accumulation of wealth – surplus property gained has to be redistributed – but it values the fame acquired by individuals in competitive rituals. Fame is not regarded as threatening the balance of their society.
Download or read book The Essence written by Brian N. Winslade and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teaching of Jesus of Nazareth is unparalleled and universally acclaimed in the history of our world. Born into relative obscurity and poverty, no one has impacted the world to the same extent as Jesus. Amidst all he said and did, his close friend Matthew (a former social outcast) captured his teaching—delivered on a hillside just above the town where he lived, overlooking the Sea of Galilee. The fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters of Matthew’s Gospel, commonly referred to as the Sermon on the Mount, have been described as the essence of all that Jesus taught about God and how we relate with him. Every Christian (and every preacher!) must wrestle with the words of Jesus given on a Galilean hillside. If a person grasped nothing else of the words Jesus spoke, apart from that contained in the Sermon on the Mount, he or she catches the essence of his timeless message. This book unpacks the essence of Jesus’ teaching and its remarkable application in our current age—a resource for individual Christ-followers, preachers, and a discussion-starter for small groups.

Download or read book Youth Ministry in Papua New Guinea written by Danijela Schubert and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-07-12 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papua New Guinea is experiencing changes that grow in significance and accelerate in pace. Although the majority of its population are still subsistence farmers, the postmodern world is fast making an impact. That means that, at the same time, they are strongly influenced by firmly ingrained tradition where animism is binding and a pervasive element as well as Western media with its consumerism and worldview. The most impacted are youth who are caught between the traditional and postmodern culture. In a country that is Christian by constitution, pastors are looked upon with high esteem. They need to find a way to bridge the gap, to make sense of the world youth are living in, and find a meaningful way forward. Although this book is aimed at pastors and youth workers in PNG, other sectors can benefit from the research--politicians, educators, health workers, clergy--especially if they are coming from a different culture, be that from PNG or another country.

Download or read book Growing Up Global What a TCK s Life is Like written by Cindy Loong and published by 天道書樓. This book was released on with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All these missionary and pastorsʼ kids come from dedicated Christian families. They are taking a great risk in sharing about their lives, even imperfections about themselves and parents. Yet Godʼs glory is not jeopardized by human imperfections. Like many psalms in the Bible, these genuine stories will leave us with the conviction that God is even more real than ever. Matthew Mok, Senior Pastor of Shepherd International Church I am deeply touched by each young writer’s courage, perseverance and their positive attitude toward life. As you hold this book in your hand, please bless each of them as you read their stories. They surely are arrows in God’s quiver, and trail blazers for the next stage of world missions. Titus Loong, Director of Wecare Center I’ve known Cindy since she was a very little girl. To see her put these stories into print is a great pleasure. She certainly knows the world of MK’s from the inside. She is continuing the legacy her parents passed down to her in the world of missions. I know the readers will treasure the insights and wisdom of this collection of stories! Judy Long, The Evangelical Alliance Mission As a missionary parent who has raised three TCK’s, I appreciate what it means for them to come to terms with who they are. Growing Up Global, gives them a voice and helps them to know that they are not alone or strange. In fact, TCK’s understand the world from a global perspective and can be a key to missions, companies and even governments who have to operate in our interconnected world. Rich Johnson, World Venture Cindy not only made it possible for these TCKs to express their reflections on their journeys, she also let their parents and other Christian readers read between the lines, and be reminded that God has not abandoned those who have so faithfully served Him. God Himself has shepherded these children, led them through thick and thin, and brought them out of confusion into strength and maturity. Raymond Lo, Executive Director, FEBC HK
Download or read book Becoming Better Grownups written by Brad Montague and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times-bestselling author looks for the meaning of a good life by seeking advice from the very young and the very old. When his first book tour ended, Brad Montague missed hearing other people's stories so much that he launched what he dubbed a Listening Tour. First visiting elementary schools and later also nursing homes and retirement communities, he hoped to glean new wisdom as to how he might become a better grownup. Now, in this playful and buoyant book, he shares those insights with rest of us --timeless, often surprising lessons that bypass the head we're always stuck in, and go straight to the heart we sometimes forget. Each of the book's three sections begins with the illustrated story of "The Incredible Floating Girl." Brad weaves this story together with lessons of success, fear, regret, gratitude, love, happiness, and dreams to reveal the true reason we are here: to fly, and to help others fly. Beautifully designed and featuring Montague's own whimsical 4-color illustrations that appeal to the kid in all of us, Becoming Better Grownups shares the purpose and meaning we can all discover merely by listening, and reveals that--in a world that seems increasingly childish--the secret to joy is in fact to become more childlike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore legends, mythical sightings, and intriguing explorations from around the globe! Enjoy the unique combination of visual illustrations and unforgettable accounts. Discover why the author calls into question what we've been taught to believe and understand about the history of dinosaurs and man. Every legend is said to include some grain of truth, and for years co-author Dave Woetzel has sought to separate fact from fiction as he explores mysteries related to dinosaurs, mankind's history, and the biblical time-line. Teaming with artist and designer Richard Dobbs, the two have created a visual archive of expeditions and intriguing clues to explore, all of which highlight the connection to the authority and reliability of Scripture. Provocative artifacts from around the world are examined in an exquisite, full-color book that hints at man's familiarity with living dinosaurs. Studies point to more than simple answers beneath the waves of Loch Ness, and other sites around the world, many investigated personally by the author. Here is the study of cryptozoology and the discoveries that seem to defy all evolutionary time-lines, vividly illustrated and filled with rare photos.
Download or read book Portraits of Global Christianity written by Gina A. Zurlo and published by William Carey Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in Light of the Global Body of Christ Books on global Christianity have been growing substantially in the last ten years. The importance of studying Christianity beyond White Western history and theology has taken on a special relevance in an increasingly globalized world. The study of Global Christianity is about recognizing the diversity of Christians around the world in terms of their cultures, languages, ethnicities, worldviews, and approaches to the faith. World Christianity is about making global-local connections and providing Christians the opportunity to learn from one another to enhance their faith and broaden their perspectives. Most World Christianity books are written for scholarly audiences only. However, Portraits of Global Christianity moves beyond that sphere and into the lives of Christians who have learned about and continue to experience the global church in their everyday lives. No other global Christianity book on the market provides this kind of self-understanding on the relationship between World Christianity and individual experience. In doing, it aims to make a unique contribution to the field. This book is geared toward a general Christian audience and is written in an accessible style with attractive full-color charts, maps, and graphs to make quantitative data on Christianity and other religions come alive. The reflections and essays in this book in honor of Todd M. Johnson provide readers with concrete examples of how knowledge and experience of Christianity worldwide has fundamentally changed their worldviews, perspectives of the faith, and vocational callings. It encourages readers to reflect on their attitudes toward people who do not look like them or live out the faith like them, to more seriously consider the growth of Christianity in the global South and its impact on their own lives, and seek opportunities to reach across ethnic, class, and gender boundaries for the sake of Christian hospitality, discipleship, and friendship.

Download or read book The Report Papua New Guinea 2016 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terms of investment, Papua New Guinea’s geographic location, geopolitical importance and abundance of commodities, as well as the success of the PNG Liquefied Natural Gas project, have helped it become a favoured destination for Chinese and Japanese ventures, with expectations of further foreign direct investment (FDI) going forward, particularly in the primary sector. However, PNG remains a challenging place for international participants, and while high-level, strategically important projects are likely to proceed smoothly, smaller, more entrepreneurial ventures may face difficulty. To improve this reputation the country is trying to boost transparency and efficiency in business transactions, though new initiatives under way could see it adopt more protectionist policies, thereby going against the tenets of liberal economics it has traditionally embraced.
