Book Grouplised Schools in China

Download or read book Grouplised Schools in China written by Guopeng Fu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents how neoliberal trends, as reflected in the grouplised school structure, affect teachers’ professional learning and daily practice, and discusses how teacher agency is enabled and constrained at both individual and collective levels. The author interviewed teachers and administrators from eight different grouplised schools. He argues that the neoliberal trends in high-stakes accountability largely constrained teacher agency. School grouplisation was generally top-down, and a bottom-up structure is needed to support teachers' professional growth. Collective agency and administrator support could protect students against the neoliberal trends in education by enabling teachers to make conscious, moral decisions and take actions in their daily practice. He further identifies principles of invoking collective agency among teachers and proposes suggestions for educational reform implementation in neoliberal contexts. Policymakers, school administrators and teachers interested in grouplised schools and collective agency may find this book insightful.

Book Deciphering Chinese School Leadership

Download or read book Deciphering Chinese School Leadership written by Allan Walker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With existing educational leadership models and theories being predominantly western influenced, this book aims to provide more insight into school leadership in China. It pioneers building research- and practice-informed knowledge and unravels the complexities that characterize the scholarship, context and practices of school leadership. School leadership in China is presented through four sub-purposes: investigating how Chinese school leadership is conceptualized in the international and Chinese literature; exploring the shifting context within which Chinese school leaders enact their leadership, and examining key policies that have shaped the practice of leader development; extending the understandings about the complexities of work lives of Chinese school leaders; and further locating indigenous understandings of Chinese school leadership in the political and socio-cultural context of contemporary China, and the theoretical and conceptual context of international school leadership. This text will be particularly useful to international education researchers with focus on educational leadership, comparative education, education policy and education in China.

Book Chinese Education Models in a Global Age

Download or read book Chinese Education Models in a Global Age written by Chuing Prudence Chou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s rise, an increasing emphasis on international education benchmarking, and a global recognition of East Asian countries’ success in this regard have brought the issue of Chinese education to the forefront of public consciousness. In particular, the concept of a “Chinese education model” is one that has sparked debate and quickly become a major focus of education research around the world, especially in light of regional achievements vis-à-vis university rankings, bibliometric indices, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), and other such benchmarks. Chinese Education Models in a Global Age tackles this controversial issue head on by synthesizing a diversity of analyses from a world-class team of twenty-seven authors. It reveals that Chinese education models, which are present in many different geographic and institutional contexts, have an important influence on social and institutional norms as well as individual belief systems and behaviors in China and beyond. The first of its kind, this edited volume establishes a foundation for future research while providing a nuanced and tightly integrated compilation of differing perspectives on the role and impact of Chinese education models worldwide. It is essential reading for all scholars, policymakers, students, parents, and educators interested in the rising demographic and economic influence of people of Chinese descent on education around the world.

Book School Choice in China

Download or read book School Choice in China written by Wu Xiaoxin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School Choice in China explores the major characteristics of schooling options in China, highlighting how largely middle-class parents exploit their cultural, economic and social capital for their children's admission into choice schools. It highlights how payments such as choice fees, donations, prize-winning certificates and awards, as well as the use of guanxi, result in Chinese school choice as a parent-driven, bottom-up movement. The author also explores how schools and local governments cash in on the school choice fever in order to obtain significant economic returns, leading to policies that accommodate the needs of mostly middle-class families. He argues that although this system seems to create winners among the parties involved, it exacerbates the educational inequality that already exists in Chinese society. Chapters include: Positional competition for cultural capital Exploitation of social capital Economics of school choice Class reproduction through parental choice This book is not simply a detailed analysis of Chinese school choice practices, but also a study of the competitive middle class search for advantage for their children. As such it will be beneficial to undergraduates, postgraduates, education professionals, policy makers, and anyone with an interest in education, sociology, social policy, and the rise and future of China.
