Book excerpt: Historically, applications of algebraic topology to the study of topological transformation groups were originated in the work of L. E. 1. Brouwer on periodic transformations and, a little later, in the beautiful fixed point theorem ofP. A. Smith for prime periodic maps on homology spheres. Upon comparing the fixed point theorem of Smith with its predecessors, the fixed point theorems of Brouwer and Lefschetz, one finds that it is possible, at least for the case of homology spheres, to upgrade the conclusion of mere existence (or non-existence) to the actual determination of the homology type of the fixed point set, if the map is assumed to be prime periodic. The pioneer result of P. A. Smith clearly suggests a fruitful general direction of studying topological transformation groups in the framework of algebraic topology. Naturally, the immediate problems following the Smith fixed point theorem are to generalize it both in the direction of replacing the homology spheres by spaces of more general topological types and in the direction of replacing the group tl by more general compact groups.

The impact of his contributions in algebra, group theory and geometry made over a span of more than five decades is incalculable. Many fundamental developments in several fields of mathematics have their origin in ideas of Tits. A number of Tits' papers mark the starting point of completely new directions of research. Outstanding examples are papers on quadratic forms, on Kac-Moody groups and on what subsequently became known as the Tits alternative. These volumes contain an almost complete collection of Tits' mathematical writings. They include, in particular, a number of published and unpublished manuscripts which have not been easily accessible until now. This collection of Tits' contributions in one place makes the evolution of his mathematical thinking visible. The development of his theory of buildings and BN-pairs and its bearing on the theory of algebraic groups, for example, reveal a fascinating story. Along with Tits' mathematical writings, these volumes contain biographical data, survey articles on aspects of Tits' work, and comments by the editors on the content of some of his papers. Book excerpt: Given a mathematical structure, one of the basic associated mathematical objects is its automorphism group. The object of this book is to give a biased account of automorphism groups of differential geometric struc tures. All geometric structures are not created equal; some are creations of ~ods while others are products of lesser human minds. Amongst the former, Riemannian and complex structures stand out for their beauty and wealth. A major portion of this book is therefore devoted to these two structures. Chapter I describes a general theory of automorphisms of geometric structures with emphasis on the question of when the automorphism group can be given a Lie group structure. Basic theorems in this regard are presented in §§ 3, 4 and 5. The concept of G-structure or that of pseudo-group structure enables us to treat most of the interesting geo metric structures in a unified manner. In § 8, we sketch the relationship between the two concepts. Chapter I is so arranged that the reader who is primarily interested in Riemannian, complex, conformal and projective structures can skip §§ 5, 6, 7 and 8. This chapter is partly based on lec tures I gave in Tokyo and Berkeley in 1965.

They differ, however, from many such Conference proceedings in that particular emphasis has been given to the review and exposition of the state of the theory in its various mani festations, and the suggestion of direction to further research, rather than purely on the publication of research papers. That is not to say that there is no new material contained herein. On the contrary, there is an abundance of new material, many new ideas, new questions, and new conjectures~arefully incorporated within the framework of the theory as the various authors see it. An original objective of the Conference and of this report was to supply a much needed review of and supplement to the theory since the publication of the three standard works, MONTGOMERY and ZIPPIN, Topological Transformation Groups, Interscience Pub lishers, 1955, BOREL et aI. , Seminar on Transformation Groups, Annals of Math. Surveys, 1960, and CONNER and FLOYD, Differen tial Periodic Maps, Springer-Verlag, 1964. Considering this objective ambitious enough, it was decided to limit the survey to that part of Transformation Group Theory derived from the Montgomery School.

Book excerpt: The Relativity Conference in the Midwest was held in Cincin nati from June 2-6, 1969 and was sponsored jointly by the Aerospace Research Laboratories and the University of Cincinnati. During 1969, the Aerospace Research Laboratories celebrated the twentieth year of its existence and the University of Cincinnati celebrated its sesquicentennial year. Because of the extended interest of the Aerospace Research Laboratories in the Theory of Relativity and the recent arrival at the University of Cincinnati of one of the confer ence organizers it was felt that sponsoring a National Conference on Relativity designed primarily for participation by American scientists would represent a worthwhile contribution to the joint celebrations. This was the first formal national conference specifically devoted to relativity held in this country since the 1957 conference on The Role of Gravitation in Physics held in Chapel Hill. The format of the week-long conference consisted primarily of invited papers and extensive informal discussions. Contributed papers were generally discouraged except as their subject matter fit into the discussions. At no time was a clock used to terminate an invited talk; it was frequently necessary, however, to terminate the dis cussions after some hours because of the onset of weariness in mind and stomache. By general demand a special informal session was organized and held on Tuesday night to discuss "Superspace. " The Superspace Session started at 8:00 P. M. and faded away beginning at 2:00 A. ~L This volume contains a summary of most of the invited papers.
