Book Ground Forces for a Rapidly Employable Joint Task Force

Download or read book Ground Forces for a Rapidly Employable Joint Task Force written by E. C. Gritton and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 2000 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a "think piece" about rapidly deployable future ground forces that would be used in time-urgent joint-task-force missions. The authors sketch out what is needed operationally, describe forces responsive to those needs, and discuss the feasibility of achieving such forces-first with near-term systems but new operational concepts, and then, for the longer term, by drawing upon advanced technology.

Book Ground Forces for a Rapidly Employable Joint Task Force First Week Capabilities for Short Warning Conflicts

This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many military interventions to deter or thwart an invader entering a country friendly to the United States, the United States would benefit greatly from being able to employ-within days rather than weeks-a joint task force that would combine long-range fires from aircraft and missiles with maneuver forces on the ground. Although long-range fires alone might be sufficient in some cases, in many others they would not. If suitable maneuver forces existed and could be used (a function of circumstances), they could greatly enhance the effectiveness of long-range fires, further damage and disrupt the enemy themselves, hedge against some potential failures of the fires, and accomplish other important objectives. They could be especially valuable for conflicts in mixed terrain, and in conflicts in which they linked up with significant friendly forces. They could be quite useful in smaller-scale contingencies as well as major wars. For example, had such forces existed in 1999, more options would have been available to NATO's political leaders in the early stages of the Kosovo operation.

Book Intervening in Short warning Conflicts

Download or read book Intervening in Short warning Conflicts written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key element of the Department of Defense's effort to "transform the force" is developing capabilities for rapidly employable joint task forces (JTFs). In many plausible military interventions along the ill-defined spectrum of small scale to large scale conflicts, long range precision fires alone would not be sufficient, and the JTFs would need ground-maneuver forces employable within days of a decision to take action. The RAND team recommends a three component first week ground force of Army and Marine Corps units that would incorporate The RAND analysis integrates work accomplished for recent Defense Science Board summer studies, a 1999 study for the Department of Defense on force transformation, and several other efforts for DoD and Army sponsors. It also reflects much relevant experience of the Marine Corps. The remainder of this brief elaborates on the team's conclusions.

Book Network centric Operations Case Study

Download or read book Network centric Operations Case Study written by Daniel Gonzales and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors of this report seek to understand how network-centric operations (NCO) capabilities are a source of combat power for the Army's Stryker brigade and to determine the extent to which the tenets of NCO are realized by the unit. Using a broad range of measures of effectiveness, the authors compared the performance of a Stryker brigade with that of a nondigitized light infantry brigade in certification exercises at the Joint Readiness Training Center and found that the Stryker brigade's superior networking capabilities, superior shared situational awareness, speed of command, and ability to control the speed of command vastly improved the brigade's performance in these exercises. Using NCO measures of effectiveness, this analysis sheds light on the NCO capabilities that made the Stryker brigade a more agile and effective combat force. The authors conclude by discussing the potential implications of future NCO capabilities for future Army forces."--BOOK JACKET.

Historical experience and an assessment of U.S. regional interests are used to determine how much warning time the United States typically has before major force deployments and where it is most likely to deploy such forces

Book The George W Bush Defense Program

Download or read book The George W Bush Defense Program written by Stephen J. Cimbala and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The events of 9/11 and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan make an obvious case for expert study of the George W. Bush defense program. During the Bush administration, the rise and fall of governments, the fates of peoples, and the very definitions of "war" and "victory" were up for discussion. The United States, with its unprecedented global military power at the dawn of the twenty-first century, created new opportunities for using foreign policy and military strategy on behalf of national and allied interests. But this power was limited, and its use against unconventional or otherwise unorthodox enemies required careful calibration of its various instruments. In this insightful series of essays edited by Stephen Cimbala, eleven academic experts prominent in the defense and security think-tank communities assess Bush's defense program. Many also have past or current experience in the U.S. government or the American armed forces. They examine Bush's defense policy and strategy across several critical issues, including Iraq, Afghanistan, terrorism, nuclear arms control, and foreign military sales. In addition, special chapters are devoted to the leadership style of former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, to the idea of "victory" as it might apply to Bush's defense decisions, and to the best exit strategy from Iraq for the United States. The lessons learned from the successes and failures in Bush's defense policy, clearly presented in The George W. Bush Defense Program, can also be applied to the appraisal of all presidents.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A selective review of modern decision science and implications for decision-support systems. The study suggests ways to synthesize lessons from research on heuristics and biases with those from "naturalistic research." It also discusses modern tools, such as increasingly realistic simulations, multiresolution modeling, and exploratory analysis, which can assist decisionmakers in choosing strategies that are flexible, adaptive, and robust.

Book New Challenges New Tools for Defense Decisionmaking

Download or read book New Challenges New Tools for Defense Decisionmaking written by Stuart E. Johnson and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2003-03-31 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is still easy to underestimate how much the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War?--and then the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001?--transformed the task of American foreign and defense policymaking. In place of predictability (if a sometimes terrifying predictability), the world is now very unpredictable. In place of a single overriding threat and benchmark by which all else could be measured, a number of possible threats have arisen, not all of them states. In place of force-on-force engagements, U.S. defense planners have to assume "asymmetric" threats?--ways not to defeat U.S. power but to render it irrelevant. This book frames the challenges for defense policy that the transformed world engenders, and it sketches new tools for dealing with those challenges?--from new techniques in modeling and gaming, to planning based on capabilities rather than threats, to personnel planning and making use of "best practices" from the private sector.
